Belonging and Othering in Research and Education: Bringing Indigenous Voices into the Classroom
This article explores the use of Two-Eyed Seeing as a guiding framework to bring Indigenous and Western knowledges alongside one another in post-secondary art education. In response to growing calls for decolonization in education, the research highlights the need for culturally responsive pedagogy, relational accountability, and authentic engagement with Indigenous communities. Rooted in decolonization and Indigenous methodologies such as Storywork, the research centers Indigenous voices through collaborative workshop design led by Indigenous knowledge holders and artists. The study emphasizes the educator’s responsibility to move beyond tokenism, engage in critical self-reflection, and build reciprocal relationships. Two-Eyed Seeing fosters transformative learning by valuing diverse knowledge systems equally and supporting student connection, creativity, and relationality. The article critically examines the challenges non-Indigenous educators face in decolonizing curricula, including fear, lack of preparation, and systemic barriers. It calls for education that is co-created, reflective, and committed to centering Indigenous perspectives
Awareness-Raising Tools Regarding Violence Against Students in Schools: A Literature Review
This paper presents a literature review aimed at identifying common features of existing awareness-raising tools related to violence against students, and more specifically ordinary educational violence in schools. Fifteen relevant documents were analyzed, revealing a scarcity of tools addressing ordinary educational violence. Most tools focus on universal intervention, targeting cultural shifts, or equipping staff to recognize and address specific manifestations of violence. Despite variations in content and format, the effectiveness of these tools is often asserted without clear identification of what makes them effective. Drawing from these insights, this study outlines shared characteristics and offers valuable insights for the development of an awareness-raising tool to prevent ordinary educational violence in schools.
Implication Statement
The practice of social medicine, which requires skills in interprofessional collaboration and navigating community resources, is crucial for training students to provide holistic care. We developed a social needs-based virtual student-run clinic called Navigating Ottawa Resources To improve Health (NORTH) to assist newcomers and underserved families with navigating community resources in Ottawa, Ontario. We found that pre-clerkship medical students improved their knowledge and comfort-level with addressing social needs while clients found the service helpful for accessing community support. NORTH is an effective learning opportunity for pre-clerkship medical students to practice social medicine and serve vulnerable communities that can be organized and operated in other communities.Énoncé des implications de la recherche
Bull Trout (Salvelinus confluentus) Population Structure and Extent of Hybridization with Brook Trout (S. fontinalis) Across Alberta\u27s Eastern Slopes
Biodiversity loss on Earth is increasing, primarily from anthropogenic (human) impacts and the threat of climate change. Native bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) is one species in Alberta that are currently threatened and require conservation action to survive. To aid in species management goals, we performed a genetic analysis on fish samples across the province. This was performed to determine the extent non-native hybridization, and the genetic population structure of bull trout across Alberta
Silenced Voices: Institutional Responses to Bullying of Deans in Canadian and Australian Universities
In this paper, we share testimonies from interviews with 29 faculty deans from universities across Canada and Australia who have been targeted by bullies, and we examine how their institutions responded. Often silenced, we expose the consequences of institutional (in)actions on the identity and well-being of these leaders and document the impact of inadequate policies and procedures that deans are trusted to protect and support them. These stories combine to create a collective force calling for institutional courage to address incivility and bullying, as well as to challenge the culture that enables and reinforces it. We conclude with recommendations that institutions can implement to proactively protect and support deans to mitigate bullying in higher education.
The Dynamics of Fiscal Adjustment in Alberta
This paper investigates the effects of budgetary imbalances on various fiscal variables using time series data from Alberta spanning over half a century. Our empirical analysis reveals Alberta responds to budget deficits by cutting program spending and raising tax revenue. The results indicate that in response to a one percentage point increase in the current budget deficit to GDP ratio, Alberta’s governments have cut program spending by 0.24 percentage points and raised tax revenue by 0.06 percentage points the following year. These results imply that about 80 percent of the short-term fiscal responses to budgetary imbalances appear on the spending side of the provincial government budget. The empirical results of this study provide evidence of the asymmetric effects of fiscal imbalances on tax revenue and government program spending in the province. We also find that the provincial governments’ spending response to the budget deficit depends on whether oil prices are predicted to increase or decrease
