The Role of Equity Financing on the Profitability of Indonesian Islamic Banks

    No full text
Islamic banks provide financing in the form of equity financing and non-equity financing. Equity financing is profit-loss sharing financing which is the main core of Islamic bank business consisting of Mudharabah and Musyarakah. This paper examines the extent to which equity financing affects the profitability of Islamic banks in Indonesia with the control variables consisting of bank-specific variables such as capital adequacy ratio, cost-income ratio, non-performing financing, and macroeconomic conditions such as domestic output, exchange rate. This study employs aggregate data of Islamic banks from January 2010 to December 2019. The estimation method is the Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model. The results prove evidence of the long-run relationship between the dependent andindependent variables. The results show that total equity financing increases Islamic banks' profitability in Indonesia, but only Musyarakah financing significantly boosts profitability. Furthermore, the bank-specific variables affecting profits are capital, efficiency, and nonperforming financing. High capital adequacy ratio (CAR) reduces profit and inefficient Islamic banks and non-performing financing lower profit. Evidence also highlights that worse economic conditions through the economic downturn and sharp depreciation obviously lower the profitability of Islamic banks. These results imply that Islamic banks must capitalize on Musyarakah financing to support the performance of Islamic banks

The Maṣlaḥa of Indonesian Foreign Domestic Workers in Saudi Arabia still become the biggest concern. Even though Saudi Arabia has reformed the Labor Law on the kafāla system, unfortunately, it is excluded from Foreign Domestic Workers. Therefore, it urges legal research to examine the kafāla system in Saudi Arabia from an Islamic and human rights perspective. Then, to provide the strategic plans for the Indonesian government to do. This research uses doctrinal research methods through the literature study and analyzed with the qualitative descriptive method. From the Islamic law perspective, although the kafāla system in Saudi Arabia is derived from the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Kafāla system in Saudi Arabia is regulated on Resolution no. 310. However, in practice, Kafil abuses their strong position (83. QS. Al-Mutaffifin) in treating workers arbitrarily. In other words, there is a deviation from the philosophical values of maqāṣid ash-syarīʿah. From the international law perspective, this practice is against the mandate of the UDHR and ICCPR. Therefore, it is highly recommended that Indonesia push Saudi Arabia to replace individual sponsorship as Kafil for Indonesian Domestic Workers. It is better to establish a special guarantee institution for Domestic Workers from Indonesia in Saudi Arabia integrated with the SPSK System

Information technology is developing very fast, this has an impact on real changes in every element of life. In addition to hitting the information media industry, developments in information technology have brought updates to public spaces with easy access and an increasingly massive pattern of information distribution. Ease of access does not always present a positive side but there is a negative side, namely shifting communication patterns with the spread of false information or disinformation methods that invite public upheaval. This research uses the case study method, which is one way to investigate contemporary phenomena in the context of real life, where the boundaries between the phenomenon and the context are not clearly visible. Through the Social Network Analyzer (SNA) theoretical approach, this research will find three communication network patterns, namely a centralized network, a decentralized network and a distributed network

The heavy metal genre in an Islamic city of Padang: struggle and promotion

    No full text
A qualitative research was conducted on how heavy metal survived and competed with other genres in a sacred city of Padang Indonesia, where metal and religion seemed to be unmatched. This research aims at understanding why heavy metal showed no significant progress despite its long existence in the city. An interview of five musicians from the five most popular metal bands in the city revealed that the metal music genre had struggled to survive for two reasons: the stigma of its negative influence on society and the failure of metal musicians in proving that metal symbols and lifestyle were irrelevant to the arts of metals. A SWOT analysis suggests that the metalheads need to utilize their subcultural capital by modifying their music using religious lyrics within the scene and by following social norms outside the scene

    No full text
In a couple of years, massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) previous works reported various informal digital learning of English (IDLE) activities within and around video games that could enhance student-gamer vocabulary outcomes; receptive and productive language skills; and language socialization. The lack of multidisciplinary literature reviews between IDLE and language policy (LP) gives this study to open discussion on both areas. The urgency of this study is the high adoption of IDLE framework without considering LP where the reason for student’s engagement from MMORPG activities can be explained. This study aims to portray IDLE practitioner's activities in MMORPG from language management, beliefs, and practices. Following the long-term process, the data were generated from auto-ethnography and photo-elicitation that were taken from in-game and out-of-game activities. This article found three major findings. First, the management of MMORPG provoked gamers to communicate as a part of the game mission, and the guild could potentially develop top-down and bottom-up LP. Second, the value of language in the community played role in the decision-making language use from the negotiation process. Third, English and Mandarin dominated language practices from different interlocutors in various forms such as language in MMORPG’s context, code mixing, and abbreviation from multilingual sides giving various reading texts in contexts. The high status of English is still dominated by out-of-game language practices. There are two major implications in theory and praxis that would be discussed in this study. Keywords: Auto-ethnography, IDLE, language policy, MMORPG, and multilingual environment
