    No full text
The increasing consumption of Islamic popular culture in Indonesia has marked the deepening Islamisation among the Muslim majority. Some scholars have observed the interplay between Islam and popular culture among Indonesian Muslim youths. However, only a few scholars have studied how a particular religious product has been debated and contested within a Muslim society. This article examines the conflicting responses over an Islamic song that describes romantic expression between the Prophet and His wife, Aisha. It focuses on three groups: popular preachers, progressive writers, and YouTube audience. This study found that while some Muslim preachers and progressive writers have criticized the song’s lyrics, most Muslim audience keep consuming the song and regard it as an ideal model of Islamic romance as expressed by the Prophet and His wife, Aisha. The various responses from the three groups represent the diversity of Indonesian Muslims with regards to Islam and popular culture. It also suggests that the Muslim consumers do not always follow the opinions of popular religious elites. The popularity of the song has resonated with the increasing aspiration among pious young Muslims who seek the basis of Islamic romance through the lives of the Prophet and His wife.

    No full text
This study investigates the resilience of Islamic banks during the Covid-19 pandemic using indicators of financial and sharia performance. The sample consists of 13 out of 14 Islamic banks registered with the financial services authority (OJK). One sample was excluded due to incomplete annual report data. The data assembled ranged from 2018, two years before Covid-19 until 2020 during the pandemic. Furthermore, the mean difference test was carried out on financial and sharia performance by comparing data before and during Covid-19. The results showed that during the pandemic, the financial performance proxied by capital adequacy ratio, non-performing financing, and financing to deposit ratio was higher, while profitability showed a decrease. Meanwhile, sharia performance, which reflects sharia principles and social values increased. Both performances were not significantly different when the data before and during the pandemic was compared. Therefore, Islamic banks show resilience when a crisis, specifically Covid-19 occurs

This paper analyzed how Muslim women at the grassroots level can prevent religious conflict in Tanzania by examining their roles, contributions, and challenges. This qualitative research used observation and in-depth interviews with the main respondents to address the three issues mentioned above. In contrast to their role and contributions to religious conflict prevention, the findings showed that Tanzanian Muslim women at the grassroots level faced numerous challenges. There are two major roles that grassroots Muslim women play in religious conflict prevention: raising awareness and providing religious education. Regarding their contributions, they supported and strengthened Islamic religiosity, empathy, and peace. Lastly, some of their challenges included a lack of resources and financial support, a lack of influence and participation, and a lack of expertise and skills in conflict prevention. The author recommends that other peacebuilding ventures can be studied, particularly by focusing on the contributions that have been played by upper and middle class Muslim women have played in reducing conflict within Muslim society

    No full text
Hedging and boosting or ‘pembentengan’ (Indonesian) is the act of scientific writers in maintaining smooth scientific communication. This paper answers two problem formulations, i.e., what are the linguistic manifestations of hedges and boosters in Indonesian scientific articles, and how their meaning reveals the writer's level of confidence in the information conveyed. This study aims to enrich the description of scientific writing practices in Indonesia to support the development of scientific writing skills in general. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. This research data is in the form of sentences containing hedges and boosters from various scientific journals published in Indonesia through the note-taking technique. The main theory to analyze the data is the theory on hedges and boosters. The data were analyzed semantically, syntactically, and pragmatically. The results show that hedges and boosters in the form of adverbs are the most commonly used in Indonesian Scientific writing. The meaning of hedges and boosters cannot always be determined by their lexical meaning because each hedge and booster has to be seen in its use in the sentence. The Indonesian scientific community has its own agreement in the social interaction of scientific articles. Keywords: scientific writing; hedges and boosters; confidence; doubt; function; interactio
