Hijrah and changing religious preferences in contemporary Islamic legal practice
This research examines how urban Muslim communities in Purwokerto understand and practice religion in the area of muamalah (social relationships between people). Religious practice in urban Muslim communities is different from other religious communities. The intersection between the reality of modernity, Islamicity, and identity provides a model for distinguishing contemporary Muslim religious practices. This study is based on field research employing a phenomenological approach. Participatory observation was used to collect data from two mosques in Purwokerto City: the General Soedirman Grand Mosque and the Gelora Indah Mosque. Both mosques serve as the hub of religious discourse for Purwokerto's urban Muslim community, and they host a variety of religious studies on a regular basis. In-depth interviews were performed with worshippers from the two mosques by the researchers. Secondary data is derived from studies, journals, books, and other sources. This article concludes that urban Muslim identity is manifested in the shift away from usury practices and the choice of halal products. Studies in urban mosques and social media cannot isolate the rhetoric from the social formation of urban Muslims. In this environment, hijrah (shifting paradigm) has emerged as one of the trends that give rise to new nuances and views of any Islamic legal concept that is an annotated version of older works. Because of these shifts in preferences, the discipline of Islamic law, particularly fiqh muamalah, has become one of the most important areas for the expression of religious experience in the lives of urban Muslim

The contemporary Salafist movement in Indonesia began to develop in the1970s. In its development, the Salafist movement later gave rise to variousfactions. One of the results of the dynamic and contestation of these variousfactions was the emergence of religious moderation movements of Salafists. This article tries to explain the role of The Islamic Propagation Council ofIndonesia (DDII) and the Institute for the Study of Islam and Arabic (LIPIA) inthe dynamics of the Salafist movement and to trace and describe the dynamicsand the religious moderation movements of the Salafist groups, particularly inJakarta, Indonesia. The research methods used are historical research methodsand qualitative methods with a case study approach. The results show that thereare adaptations emerging from the contemporary Salafist movement. These adaptations can be seen in the acceptance of the concept of the unitary stateof the Republic of Indonesia and democracy even within the framework ofSharia and the presence of moderation or anti-violence ideas. This shows theflexibility of the movement which arises from the need for the sustainability ofthe organization or movement. In addition, cities present different challenges. This then requires an organization to adapt, either in terms of strategy, method,or proselytizing approach
The Belief System Serves as a Disaster Mitigation Mechanism to Preserve the Local Wisdom of the Baduy Tribe
This research aims to explore the belief system that serves as a disaster mitigation strategy in preserving the local wisdom of the Baduy tribe. It is a qualitative study conducted through data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, and documentation. The research findings indicate that the Baduy tribe, residing in the Kendeng Mountains of Banten, faces an uneven and disaster-prone environment, including landslides, floods, forest fires, and environmental degradation. The belief system embraced by the Baduy tribe is known as “Sunda Wiwitan.” It is characterized by the presence of “pikukuh” which serves as a guidelinefor the community’s interaction with the natural environment. These “pikukuh” consist of rules that emphasize the importance of preserving the natural environment without any alteration. The philosophy contained within the “pikukuh” includes statements such as “Lojor teu menunang dipotong, pondok teu meunang disambung”, “Gunung teu meunang dilebur, lebak teu meunang di rusak”, and “Buyut teu meunang dirobah, larangan teu meunang dirempak.” Each of these philosophies teaches the importance of preserving the environment as a form of disaster mitigation for the Baduy tribe

Religious moderation in the glorious era (reality of religious tolerance and protection during the Ottoman Empire)
This research aims to find out that during the reign of the Ottoman Empire there was inter-religious tolerance. There were even concrete contributions from Turkish Sultans respecting followers of other religions, providing protection for Christians and Jews who were hit by bloody conflicts. Several areas of the Turkish Sultanate allowed residents of different religious beliefs to live. Through the social structure that has been created by Muslim, Christian and Jewish citizens can live together in peace and tranquility. The research method is carried out by collecting information and data of various kinds of materials in the library such as reference books, results of similar previous research, articles, notes, and various journals related to the problem. The results are that the reality of religious tolerance and protection of non-Muslims during the Ottoman era was implemented well, especially since there was the al-Qanun law which generally regulated the legal system for its territory with an emphasis on the benefit of the ummah. There is also a Millet System that specifically regulates Muslims and non-Muslims living peacefully. The fact that the conquest of Constantinople did not destroy places of worship, nor did it force the conquered people to convert to Islam
Sectarian tensions, islamophobia, and decolonization: comparing Jasser Auda’s and Jonathan Brown’s analysis of the hadiths concerning Aisha’s marital age
The ongoing debate surrounding the hadiths on Aisha’s age of marriage has givenrise to two main positions among Muslim scholars, namely: the rejectors, thosewho reject the hadiths’ validity and propose the view that Aisha got married atan older age, and the defenders, those who defend them as valid hadiths andaccept that Aisha consummated her marriage at the early age of nine years old. Inthis study, we examine this issue through the opposing arguments offered by twocontemporary Muslim scholars: Jasser Auda, who represents the view of hadithrejectors, and Jonathan Brown, who represents those who accept the validity of thehadiths. These two scholars have been chosen to represent these two standpointsmainly because of their novel and distinctive theoretical contributions to theongoing debate. Entangled in this debate is the issue of whether pre-modernreality can be assessed by using modern norms. We employ critical analysis onthe epistemological and methodological aspects surrounding the two scholars’interpretations of the hadiths of Aisha’s age of marriage. We argue that threesignificant features distinguish Auda and Brown’s dispositions. These are: first, their different conceptions of the interplay between politics, knowledge, andmemory; second, their differing epistemological approaches to hadith science;and third, their opposing assumptions about the universality of modern norms

Examining Qanun in Aceh from a human rights perspective: status, substance and impact on vulnerable groups and minorities
The Helsinki Agreement between the Aceh Freedom Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Government aimed to end long-standing conflict and inequality in Aceh. It also legally empowered the Acehnese to govern their own province and protect their citizens from human rights abuses. Regrettably, the implementation of laws and policies in Aceh since the agreement, such as Qanun, has had an adverse effect on human rights, particularly for vulnerable groups and minorities. This paper analyses the need to align the substance of Qanun with international human rights norms and assesses the feasibility of implementing Qanun without violating human rights. The research method used is the qualitative method. The data collection technique mainly involves in-depth interviews with key informants, including academics, members of Aceh parliament, civil society organisations, representatives of religious organisations, the Aceh Sharia Court, the Acehnese government, and practitioners on women and children, as well as victims of human rights violations and literature reviews. This study has found that the implementation of Aceh Qanun has had negative consequences on the protection of human rights, particularly for vulnerable groups and minorities. In addition, it also affects vulnerable groups, Muslim and non-Muslim minorities who have been “forced to conform” with Aceh Qanun. The paper advocates for a harmonious balance between Qanun and human rights, which can be achieved through a more constructive dialogue between the two
