Current Status and Issues of Japanese Restaurant Industry Entering Asian Markets : Focusing on Entering the Taiwan Market

    Get PDF
The market size of the Japanese restaurant industry peaked at 29 trillion yen in 1997 and has been sluggish since then. Even more problematic is that it is likely to decrease further in the future. According to the Japanese government’s announcement, due to the declining birthrate, Japan’s population is expected to reach 86.74 million by 2060, a significant decrease from the present. In other words, unlike the situation so far, it is predicted that Japan will experience a serious population decline in the medium to long term, which will inevitably reduce the market size of the Japanese food service industry. Under these circumstances, the Japanese food service industry has reached a time when it should seek new growth opportunities. The growth opportunity is, inevitably, to enter overseas markets where the population is growing rapidly and income is rising significantly. In particular, the food service market in developing and emerging markets in Asia is likely to develop significantly in the future. In this paper, based on this situation, we analyzed the actual situation of the overseas expansion of the Japanese restaurant industry, especially focusing on the expansion into the Taiwanese market.departmental bulletin pape

Current Status and Issues of Japanese Coffee Companies’ Strategies for Entering the Taiwanese Market : Focusing on UCC’s Entry into the Taiwanese Market

The environment surrounding the restaurant industry in Japan is becoming increasingly severe every year. Aside from the immediate problem of the rapid contraction of demand for food service due to the spread of the new coronavirus, the biggest long-term problem is the ongoing contraction of the domestic market due to Japan’s declining and aging population. In contrast, overseas markets are steadily expanding due to population growth and rising incomes, showing a favorable contrast to the Japanese market. For this reason, in recent years, an increasing number of restaurant companies have actually turned their attention to overseas markets, especially Asian markets, and many of them are planning and implementing overseas expansion. In previous research, this research team examined the performance of Japanese food service companies expanding overseas and the status of store development by company, with a particular focus on their expansion into the Taiwanese market. In this section, we examine the current status of what groups of food service companies are actually expanding overseas by comparing 2017 and 2021. As a result, it became clear that the overall situation of overseas expansion is becoming more polarized, with the socalled leading large corporate groups expanding further and the smaller and medium-sized corporate groups decreasing and withdrawing. However, this paper left some unanswered questions as to whether these macroeconomic conditions are universally applicable to all types and sectors of food service companies or not. Therefore, in this paper, we will focus on a sector of the food service industry where there is not much prior research on overseas market entry, unlike the fast food chains and Japanese restaurants such as Japanese-style pubs, which have been the main focus of research so far. In this paper, we focus on the case of UCC’s expansion into Taiwan. As will be discussed later in this paper, UCC’s expansion into Taiwan is characterized by the fact that it is not only an overseas expansion as a food service company with coffee shop business as its core business, but also a strategy to expand sales of coffee bean-related products in the Taiwanese market as a food (processing) industry.departmental bulletin pape

Survey Research on Food Safety Awareness in China : Focusing on the New Consumption Trends of Consumers

    Get PDF
Since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy, there have been a number of incidents related to food safety in China. In particular, the melamine contamination of powdered milk in 2008 led to a rapid increase in consumer interest in the food safety situation in China, and at the same time, a deepening of distrust in food companies. After the melamine contamination incident, a series of problems were discovered at major milk manufacturers in China, which greatly reduced consumersʼ trust in food companies and their willingness to purchase dairy products, and even raised doubts about the governmentʼs ability to supervise and control food companies. Under these circumstances, the task of this paper is to clarify the new changes in consumer awareness, based on the consumer questionnaire survey, from the current food safety awareness and food safety thinking and behavior of Chinese consumers. The results of this study will help to raise consumer awareness of food safety and help to build a society in which food safety and security are socially accepted. Specifically, we will elucidate consumersʼ level of interest and satisfaction with food safety, as well as how they obtain food safety information. In addition, in order to find new issues and solutions for food safety, we will also clarify the current status of new trends in consumption that consumers are facing and concerns arising from food safety issues.departmental bulletin pape

Observation of Wild Animals Gathering at a Small Pond in an Urban Residential Area, and of the Strange Excretory Behavior of Masked Palm Civets in Particular

    Get PDF
Animal appearance was monitored by a small artificial pond in an urban residential area using an infrared camera for five years starting 2017. Five wild animals were recorded: masked palm civets, martens, common racoons, a weasel and a racoon dog. Most frequent were civets and martens. Civets showed strange behavior a few times; they hung themselves on the edge of the concrete pond, sticking out and lowering their rear to the water, and apparently excreted into the water. The excrement consisted of many ginkgo seeds. It was observed in April when there was no ginkgo fruit around the areadepartmental bulletin pape
