Worsening Safety Conditions for Women Journalists in Turkey’s Alternative News Media
This study, drawing on alternative journalism theory takes a postcolonial feminist approach to investigating the lived experiences and gender-based safety problems of women journalists working for alternative media in Turkey. It evaluates the impact on their professional and private lives of Islamism, populism, nationalism and authoritarianism which intersect in this patriarchal autocracy. The thematic analysis of the data gathered qualitatively by 15 in-depth interviews reveals that most of the safety threats to alternative women journalists stem from security forces in the field and arbitrary judicial sanctions in the courthouses. According to the interviewees, the authoritarian government that sees critical journalism as the greatest enemy controls and oversees these assaults. Furthermore, women journalists suffer from the unsustainable working conditions of alternative news media. Alternative media theories would expect these institutions to be gender-equal and pro-labor, but the prevalent indifference to women’s labor and gender rights demonstrates that this normative approach is not justified. However, women still feel encouraged to continue journalism, which they consider an important tool for empowerment not only for themselves but also all “otherized” identities. Moreover, women’s solidarity backed by the feminist movement is the primary source of resilience. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group
Microfluidic contact lenses for ocular diagnostics and drug delivery
The human eye and tear provide essential physiological information for the detection of ocular dysfunctions and therapy monitoring. The measurements of biomarkers in tear composition are critical for disease diagnosis and early interventions. Hence, significant efforts are dedicated to the development of functional contact lenses that can quantify tear analytes and ocular physiological condition. The combination of microfluidics and contact lens technologies offer real-time monitoring of ocular physiology and timely detection of eye disorders through wireless components. This review discusses the fundamentals of microfluidic contact lenses and their diverse applications in ophthalmic diagnostics and drug delivery. Exploring fully heavy scalar tetraquarks Q Q Q Q
The masses, current couplings and widths of the fully heavy scalar tetraquarks X4Q = Q Q Q Q, Q = c, b are calculated by modeling them as four-quark systems composed of axial-vector diquark and antidiquark. The masses m(') and couplings f (') of these tetraquarks are computed in the context of the QCD sum rule method by taking into account a nonperturbative term proportional to the gluon condensate (& alpha;sG2/& pi;). Results m = (6570 & PLUSMN; 55) MeV and m' = (18540 & PLUSMN; 50) MeV are used to fix kinematically allowed hidden-flavor decay channels of these states. It turns out that, the processes X4c & RARR; J/& psi; J/& psi;, X4c & RARR; & eta;c & eta;c, and X4c & RARR; & eta;c & chi;c1(1P) are possible decay modes of X4c. The partial widths of these channels are evaluated by means of the couplings gi, i = 1, 2, 3 which describe strong interactions of tetraquark X4c and mesons at relevant vertices. The couplings gi are extracted from the QCD threepoint sum rules by extrapolating corresponding form factors gi(Q 2) to the mass-shell of a final meson. The mass of the scalar tetraquark X4b is below the & eta;b & eta;b and ?(1S)?(1S) thresholds, therefore it does not fall apart to these bottomonia, but transforms to conventional particles through other mechanisms. Comparing m = (6570 & PLUSMN; 55) MeV and ?4c = (110 & PLUSMN; 21) MeV with parameters of structures observed by the LHCb, ATLAS and CMS collaborations, we interpret X4c as the resonance X(6600) reported by CMS. The Impact of Uncertainty on Textile Companies Profitability in the EU 27
Recent studies reveal that uncertainty is a problem for the profitability of companies in various sectors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of uncertainty on the profitability of textile companies in the EU 27. A number of models were performed using the random effects estimator. The results indicate that the uncertainty variable WUI negatively and significantly affects the profitability of the textile industry in all models. In addition, the results show that while equity to total assets and cash flow to operating revenue have a positive effect, capital intensity and operating in Eastern Europe have a negative effect on profitability. Also, size, current ratio, operating revenue to stocks and inflation do not seem to have a significant impact on profitability
The Effect of the Transtheoretical Model-Based Healthy Youth Program on Sexual Health Knowledge and Behavior of College Women
College women are at more risk in terms of sexual behavior than male students. This study was carried out to determine the effect of the transtheoretical model-based Healthy Youth Program on college women's sexual health knowledge and behaviors. The sample of the study, which was conducted with a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design, consisted of 207 first-year college women. It was determined that the Healthy Youth Program was effective in improving the sexual health knowledge and behaviors of college women. It can be used as a guide in sexual health education in colleges
The pen and the plow: Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and the reimagining of African culture
Chinua Achebe’s magnum opus, Things Fall Apart, remains a key work of world literature, shedding powerful light on the complexities of African culture long suppressed by Western narratives. Born and raised in Nigeria, Achebe became not only a celebrated writer, but also a cultural ambassador, working to promote recognition and respect for the rich traditions and history of his homeland. With Things Fall Apart, Achebe has not only told a story, but also written a counter-narrative that opposes the Western view that often misinterprets or oversimplifies African civilizations. Central to Achebe’s literary philosophy was a belief in the sanctity and power of personal stories. He firmly believed that the stories of those on the margins of society, the marginalized, should be told by people who experienced and felt them directly. These stories, Achebe believed, would be authentic, nuanced, and profound, giving readers a real insight into the African experience. Through the lens of Things Fall Apart, one isn’t merely reading about African traditions, but rather, immersing in them. Achebe masterfully manages to weave a tapestry of life, love, conflict, and change that forces readers to rethink their perceptions and understanding of Nigerian history and African culture as a whole. Achebe’s influence was not limited to his narratives, however. His critique of non-native narrators, who often painted Africa with broad, uninformed strokes, resonated widely in literary circles. Achebe emphasized the dangers of allowing others to define one’s own story and underscored the urgency for authentic African voices to reclaim their narrative. Through his works and advocacy, Achebe has not only offered narratives, but revolutionized the discourse on African culture in literature
Ağırlama Sektörü Çalışanları Duygusal Emeğinin İş Tatmini Üzerine Etkisi: Zincir Restoran İşletmeleri Üzerine Bir Uygulama
Duygusal emek, olumsuz ruh sağlığına ilişkin değişkenlerle bağdaştırılan ve bireylerin dâhil oldukları organizasyonların yapıları gereğince kendilerinden beklenen duyguları aktarmaları şeklinde tanımlanan bir kavramdır. Kişiler sosyal hayatlarında olduğu gibi çalışma hayatlarında da bazı rolleri gerçekleştirmek durumundadır. Misafir memnuniyetini sağlamanın yanı sıra söz konusu durumun sürdürülebilir olmasını da sağlamak amacıyla kurumlar, bilhassa misafir ile doğrudan ilişki halinde olan bazı çalışanlar için çeşitli davranış kalıpları geliştirmektedir. Kurumların standartları haline gelen söz konusu davranış kalıpları misafirler üzerinde olumlu algı yaratmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu nedenle çalışanlar, markanın kurum kültürünü oluşturan öğreti ve talepleri doğrultusunda çeşitli duygusal emek tutumlarını benimsemekte ve uygulamaktadır. Emek yoğun bir sektör olan hizmet sektörü çalışanları, markaların zorunlu kıldığı bu öğretilerden dolayı duygularını ifade edememekte, sınırlamakta ve bu nedenle kendilerine ve yaptıkları işe de yabancılaşmaktadır. Bahsi edilen durum, iş tatminin azalmasını doğrudan ve dolaylı olarak etkilemektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye’de bulunan zincir yiyecek içecek işletmelerinde çalışan personellerin ağırlama sektörü içerisindeki duygusal emeklerinin sahip oldukları iş tatminlerine olan etkilerini ortaya koymaktır. Ayrıca söz konusu çalışma ile Türkiye’de bulunan zincir yiyecek içecek işletmelerinde çalışan personellerin ağırlama sektörü içerisindeki duygusal emek ve iş tatmini yapılarının ne ölçüde olduğunun ve bu ölçünün, çalışanların demografik özelliklerine göre farklılık gösterip göstermediğinin tespitinin yapılması da amaçlanmaktadır. Çalışma kapsamında hazırlanan anket, 2022 yılında Türkiye’de faaliyet gösteren zincir yiyecek içecek işletmelerinde çalışan 402 gönüllü katılımcıya uygulanmıştır. Araştırmadaki katılımcı sayısı ile güvenirlik ve geçerlik unsurlarını güçlü bir şekilde taşıyan veri seti oluşmuştur. Elde edilen veri üzerinde yapılan analizler neticesinde zincir restoranlarda çalışan personellerin sahip olduğu duygusal emek durumlarının iş tatminleri üzerinde büyük oranda etkili olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır
Selfless Subjectivities that (Re)Build the Nation: Remaking the Modern Turkish Woman in the Early Republican Period in Turkiye
This study explores the newly constructed female identities of the Early Republican Era in Turkiye (1923-1945). Through a thematic analysis of three contemporary women's magazines (Aile Dostu, Ev-Is, and Asrin Kadini) it aims to examine how conceptualizations of marriage and family were refashioned in the magazines to fit in the images within the newly constructed domestic ideologies of the state. We argue that the selfless subjectivities offered by the magazines point to dialogically constructed narrative identities which are not stable but fluid. The women's magazines of the Era aimed to reconstruct new identities by representing the Republic's ideas and official ideology to its people. Thus, they became one of the tools of social engineering in the way of transforming the nation into a modern, Westernized one. Analysing these magazines help us identify the repertoire of subjectivities and narrative identities from which women drew while making sense of their selves during an era of transformation
Reconfigurable Voltage-Mode First-Order Multifunction Filter Employing Second-Generation Voltage Conveyor (VCII) With Complete Standard Functions and Electronically Controllable Modification
In this contribution, the realization of a first-order, two-input, single-output voltage-mode multifunction filter employing a second-generation voltage conveyor (VCII) is described. The proposed first-order versatile filter is extremely simple, composed of a single VCII and three passive devices. Because of its low output impedance, the output voltage node can be easily cascaded with other voltage-mode configurations without the requirement of any buffers. In the same circuit topology, the proposed firstorder filter provides various filtering functions: inverting and non-inverting low-pass (LPF), inverting and non-inverting high-pass (HPF), as well as inverting and non-inverting all-pass (APF). The digital method allows the selection of output first-order filtering functions without the need for additional circuits such as inverting or double-gain amplifiers. Furthermore, the pass-band gain of the low-pass and high-pass responses can be adjusted by varying the resistance or capacitance values without influencing the pole frequency as well as the phase response. The influence of VCII's current/voltage gain errors and parasitic elements on filtering performance is also investigated. Moreover, the modification of the proposed lagging phase allpass filter to achieve electronic controllability is also proposed by replacing the passive resistor with the operational transconductance amplifier (OTA). The 0.18 mu mTSMCCMOSstructure of the VCII employed in the proposed filter operates in the subthreshold region and utilizes the bulk-driven technique (BD), enabling it to operate with 0.4V supply voltage and consuming 383 nW of power. The total harmonic distortion (THD) of the LPF with an applied input voltage V-inpp =300mV @ 50Hz is -49.5 dB. An application example as a quadrature sinusoidal oscillator realized from the proposed first-order allpass filter and lossless integrator is also included. The performance of the proposed reconfigurable voltage-mode first-order filter is simulated and experimentally tested using a commercially available AD844 IC-based VCII with +/- 5 V power supply.University of Defence within the Organization Development Project VAROPSThis work was supported in part by the University of Defence within the Organization Development Project VAROP
Properties of kaon at non-zero temperature and baryon chemical potential
We investigate the spectroscopic properties of the strange particle kaon in the framework of hot and dense QCD. To this end, first, we find the perturbative spectral density, which is connected with both the temperature T and the baryon chemical potential mu(B). We include the non-perturbative operators as functions of temperature and baryon chemical potential up to mass dimension five. We perform the calculations in momentum space and use the quark propagator in the hot and dense medium. The numerical results at non-zero temperature and baryon chemical potential demonstrate that the mass of the particle rises considerably by increasing the baryon chemical potential at a fixed temperature (for both the zero and non-zero temperatures) up to approximately mu(B) = 0.4 GeV. After this point, it starts to fall by increasing the baryon chemical potential and it apparently vanishes at mu(B) = (1.03-1.15) GeV for finite temperatures: The point of apparent vanishing moves to lower baryon chemical potentials by increasing the temperature. At zero temperature, the mass reaches to roughly a fixed value at higher baryon chemical potentials. On the other hand, the decay constant decreases considerablywith respect to baryon chemical potential up to roughly mu(B) = 0.4 GeV, but after this point, it starts to increase in terms of the baryon chemical potential at finite temperatures. At T = 0, the decay constant reaches to a fixed value at higher chemical potentials, aswell. Regarding the dependence on the temperature we observe that, at fixed values of baryon chemical potentials, the mass and decay constant remain roughly unchanged up to T = 50 MeV and T = 70 MeV respectively, but after these points, the mass starts to fall and the decay constant starts to rise up to a critical temperature T = 155 MeV, considerably. It is also seen that the obtained results for the mass and decay constant at T = mu(B) = 0 are in good consistency with the existing experimental data. The observations are consistent with the QCD phase diagram in the T - mu(B) plane.K.
