His perfectly wonderful descriptions, and lists of books he had just read , struck a note of admiration in the hearts of the college students, as well as did his humbleness and matter-of-fact mannerisms. Second semester services brought Dr. Oswald Smith, pastor of the People\u27s Church of Toronto, Canada, to the Wheaton campus. Emphasizing the Spirit-filled Christian life, Dr. Smith\u27s messages struck home in the hearts of many students. Practical Christian living in place of doctrinal differences marked Dr. Smith\u27s sermons throughout the week of meetings. The Spirit moved upon the campus and several yielded their lives to Christ, along with scores who entered into a deeper spiritual fellowship with the Lord.; TESTIMONY...; Praise God from whom all blessings flow. How I praise God that He brought Dr. Smith to Wheaton. \u27Are you trusting Him?\u27, Dr. Smith asked. I could not honestly say that I had put all my trust in Him. But now, praise God, I am trusting fully in Him in all things. He is a wonderful Lord and saviour to me, and grows sweeter and dearer each day. -MORTON BROOKS. | Illustration of a bible- A Light Unto My Pathway.https://digitalcommons.biola.edu/phil-saint-comics/1009/thumbnail.jp

Immigrants’ Health, Acculturation, and the Work–Retirement Continuum

Although the link between immigrants’ health status and employment is well established, there is little information on the combined impact of three components of acculturation (that is, dual self-identity, language proficiency, and realized expectations) on this link. Immigrants who came to Israel from English-speaking countries (N = 377) were categorized into three groups based on the work–retirement continuum (that is, working, same occupation; working, changed occupation; or retired). Using a cross-sectional design, this study examined whether the link between health and acculturation varied by immigrants’ location on the work–retirement continuum. Bivariate analyses revealed group differences for two acculturation components, language proficiency (p \u3c .0001) and dual self-identity (p \u3c .05). Multivariable analyses indicated an interaction effect between the acculturation component of realized expectations and work–retirement continuum group status on health status. As a result, good health was related to higher levels of realized expectations for the retired group; related to lower levels of realized expectations for the “working, changed occupations” group; and unrelated to realized expectations for the “working, same occupation” group. The acculturation component of realized expectations varies depending on the immigrant’s location on the work–retirement continuum. Health and social welfare professionals can promote health in working or retired immigrants by providing clear and realistic information to better align with immigrants’ expectations

Predictors of Cognitive Skills Development Among International Students

    No full text
For international students, seeking a tertiary education outside of their home countries has been a common practice for centuries. However, recent years have brought a significant influx in the number of international students entering the United States to procure a postsecondary education. In 2018–2019, Open Doors (Institute for International Education, 2019) reported an increase in the number of international students studying in the United States for the 14th consecutive year. Because maintaining this stream of international students is of utmost importance to university officials, they strive to meet the educational goals of this student population. Understanding factors that impact the academic achievement of international students is critical. The background characteristics, precollege characteristics, and college experiences of international students have been found to predict cognitive skills development, and cognitive skills development has been linked to optimal academic achievement and student satisfaction
