Exploring religious and/or spiritual identities: part 2 – a descriptive analysis of those who are at risk for health problems

    No full text
Previous analysis of the data that are used in this study reveal that compared to people who self-identify as religious and spiritual, spiritual only, and neither religious nor spiritual, study participants who are religious only are more likely to experience physical and mental health problems. The purpose of this study is to conduct a descriptive analyses that is designed to see why this may be so. Differences between the religious only and members of the other categories combined were assessed on seven clusters of religious/spiritual variables. The findings reveal that those who are religious only have lower levels of religious practices (e.g., church attendance), they are less likely to exchange informal support with fellow church members, they are less likely to rely on religious coping responses, and they are less likely to possess virtues that have typically been associate with greater religious and spiritual involvement (i.e., compassion, forgiveness, and humility)

Three good things or three good financial things? Applying a positive psychology intervention to the personal finance domain

    No full text
This study investigates the effectiveness of the Three Good Things positive psychology intervention within the personal finance domain. A randomized control-group pretest posttest experimental survey was designed to test variations of the Three Good Things exercise on happiness, financial satisfaction, and financial self-efficacy. Interventions included the traditional Three Good Things exercise, a Three Good Financial Things exercise, and a Three Financial Things exercise. The results from a sample of 993 Amazon MTurk workers, with data collected between December 2018 – January 2019, suggest that the Three Good Things exercise was the most effective in increasing happiness and showed similar increases in financial satisfaction as the domain specific exercises. Effects from the Three Good Things intervention were the only effects to endure over time. None of the interventions demonstrated an effect on financial self-efficacy. Overall, the results support further investigation into applying PPIs within the personal finance domain

Advocacy Learning by Doing: Human Trafficking Course for Graduate Clinical Psychology Students

    No full text
The scientist-practitioner-advocate model encourages informed engagement with social justice issues. Human trafficking stands out as such an issue, where psychological science and practice make a difference on multiple levels, including prevention and raising awareness. This article discusses a human trafficking graduate course in psychology as an example of learning by doing, featuring an activity with high school students based on interactive rotation. Emphasis on diversity among high school students paves the way for solidarity and appreciation for interdependence, which go hand in hand with multicultural competency also reflected in humility. Psychologists-in-training draw parallels between rapport in clinical practice and advocacy settings, recognizing the importance of allowing sufficient time for preparation and subsequent reflection. This helps students consider personal values and belief systems, and their compatibility with raising human trafficking awareness. As a result of teaching a course on this topic and conducting the learning by doing activity, three action steps are proposed to train scientists-practitioners-advocates: Research, Rotate, and Reflec

Stained-Glass Partition: Cross-Sex Collegial Relationships in Christian Academia

    No full text
This study focused on the glass partition, a term used to describe the challenges that exist in forming and maintaining cross-sex collegial relationships in the workplace. Women may be limited in their ability to benefit from collegial relationships due to the challenges of cross-sex relationships, particularly in a Christian environment. We use the term stained-glass partition to describe the effects of gender separation in a Christian university atmosphere, a research focus that has been largely unexamined to date. In this single-institution study, 21 full-time faculty were interviewed regarding their perceptions of cross-sex relationships at work. Data were analyzed using grounded theory procedures to allow major themes to emerge. Results showed that there is a stained-glass partition operating at the university—sometimes created intentionally and partially based on fear—that has a disproportionately negative impact on women faculty. The partition can be mitigated through routine collegial interactions such as committee work and through viewing one another as sacred siblings rather than a sexual “other.” Students, faculty, and the university as a whole benefit when the partition is reduced, and the Christian faith commitment that is held in common by community members provides a helpful perspective in moving relationships away from power into agape-love and sibling-type relationships. Implications for practice and suggestions for future research are presented

The Life and Times of Leopold Cohn conference, Dec. 4-6, 2019 As the title of my paper indicates, this research seeks to explore the activities of the American Board of Missions to the Jews (ABMJ), as Chosen People Ministries was known during the years under examination, namely World War II and its aftermath, including the declaration of Jewish statehood. In order to bring coherency to this picture, I want to introduce my presentation by placing the priorities and activities of the ABMJ during this time in a number of contexts: the extent of the presence of the ABMJ in Europe at this time, the challenges it faced to remain true to the its priority of Jewish evangelism, while at the same time acting to render practical aid to desperate Jews in their immediate spheres of influence and elsewhere, and finally, what specific actions they took

Atonement and the Death of Christ: An Exegetical, Historical, and Philosophical Exploration

    No full text
Through his death on the cross, Christ atoned for sin and so reconciled people to God. New Testament authors drew upon a range of metaphors and motifs to describe this salvific act, and down through history Christian thinkers have tried to articulate various theories to explain the atonement. While Christ’s sacrifice serves as a central tenet of the Christian faith, the mechanism of atonement―exactly how Christ effects our salvation―remains controversial and ambiguous to many Christians. In Atonement and the Death of Christ, William Lane Craig conducts an interdisciplinary investigation of this crucial Christian doctrine, drawing upon Old and New Testament studies, historical theology, and analytic philosophy. The study unfolds in three discrete parts: Craig first explores the biblical basis of atonement and unfolds the wide variety of motifs used to characterize this doctrine. Craig then highlights some of the principal alternative theories of the atonement offered by great Christian thinkers of the premodern era. Lastly, Craig’s exploration delves into a constructive and innovative engagement with philosophy of law, which allows an understanding of atonement that moves beyond mystery and into the coherent mechanism of penal substitution. Along the way, Craig enters into conversation with contemporary systematic theories of atonement as he seeks to establish a position that is scripturally faithful and philosophically sound. The result is a multifaceted perspective that upholds the suffering of Christ as a substitutionary, representational, and redemptive act that satisfies divine justice. In addition, this carefully reasoned approach addresses the rich tapestry of Old Testament imagery upon which the first Christians drew to explain how the sinless Christ saved his people from the guilt of their sins.https://digitalcommons.biola.edu/faculty-books/1592/thumbnail.jp
