Collectivist Discourses in Relational Intersectionality: Insights from Chinese American Christian Couples
No full textIntersectionality espouses progressive societal dominant discourse norms that describe persons as individuals connected to a variety of social locations (e.g., gender, socioeconomic status [SES], ethnicity, sexual orientation, spirituality, vocation). This may not resonate with the cultural ideals of collectivist and bicultural communities, who are better understood when considered in context of both dominant and local intersectionality discourses. This retrospective interpretive thematic analysis examines the lived experiences of Chinese American Christian couples as they negotiate identity and roles in early parenthood. Findings indicate that the intersection of collectivist group identity markers, cultural values and spirituality guides how partners understand identity and negotiate relationship roles in marriage. Couples’ varied responses to cross-cultural and dominant discourse norms and other social location factors (e.g., vocation and SES) also account for individual differences. Implications for Chinese American Christian couples, and for the application of intersectionality theory to diverse populations, are discussed

Relational Spirituality: A Psychological-Theological Paradigm for Transformation
No full textAs our society becomes more socially fragmented, many Christians feel disconnected and struggle to grow spiritually. Common models of spiritual transformation are proving inadequate to address the sanctification gap. In recent decades, however, a new paradigm of human and spiritual development has been emerging from multiple fields. It\u27s supported by a critical mass of evidence, all pointing to what psychologists Todd W. Hall and M. Elizabeth Lewis Hall call a relational revolution. In Relational Spirituality, Hall and Hall present a definitive model of spiritual transformation based on a relational paradigm. At its heart is the truth that human beings are fundamentally relational―we develop, heal, and grow through relationships. While many sanctification models are fragmented, individualistic, and lack a clear process for change, the relational paradigm paints a coherent picture of both process and goal, supported by both ancient wisdom and cutting-edge research. Integrating insights from psychology and theology, this book lays out the basis for relational spiritual transformation and how it works practically in the context of relationships and community. E. J. Lowe and Divine Causal Agency
No full textIn this essay, I apply Lowe’s theory of rational agency to God’s causal activity. I argue that Lowe’s account fits well the traditional notions that God acts in the world for reasons. In contrast to Lowe’s analysis of human causal agency, I argue that in the divine case, reasons for acting are not constituted by needs. They are constituted by God’s desires or plans. The fit between Lowe’s account of causal agency and the contours of divine causal agency motivate an argument in favor of Lowe’s theory. Any philosopher who is a theist ought to think Lowe’s account is likely to be true
Status of Doctoral Education in the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities
No full textThe number of doctoral programs being offered by Christian universities is expanding, bringing new opportunities, needs, and challenges to these postsecondary institutions. Currently, 46 of the 113 governing member institutions of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) offer doctoral-level programs. Of the 185 member, partner, and affiliate institutions connected with the CCCU, 76 (41%) offer doctoral-level education. This article reports on the results of a 2018 survey of 57 North American institutions affiliated with the CCCU regarding their doctoral programs, with particular attention to program design, faculty development and workloads, institutional infrastructure, and student needs. Recommendations are offered for the support of doctoral programs, faculty, and students

Essays on both Testaments focus on figural exegesis, critical exegesis, and the value of diachronic understandings of the Old Testament\u27s compositional history for the sake of a richer synchronic reading.
