“Part of God’s Plan for My Life”: How Conservative Protestant Students Make Sense of Social Forces and Social Inequality

    No full text
Research shows that White conservative Protestants’ individualistic views impede their pursuit of structural solutions to social injustice. When introduced to a structural perspective through a sociology course, what religio-cultural tools do conservative Protestant students use to interpret the impact of social factors on their lives? Through an analysis of student reflections, I found that the primary way they made sense of social factors was through a lens of divine control, and this did not vary by social location. A secondary way was viewing them as unfair, a view that was more common among advantaged students than disadvantaged students

    Gift of Language

    Get PDF
What is the significance of language? As language teachers, we use it as a medium of communication and as the basis for every lesson we prepare. Could it be more than just a tool of communication or a target for students to strive for? Language actually serves as primary evidence of God’s creation of humankind in His image. Even secular thinkers marvel at the “language instinct” of human beings and regard it as the distinguishing mark of humanity, setting us apart from all other creatures. Considering the amazing wonder of language, any explanation of its origin requires a step of faith. For the theist, the most reasonable explanation for language is divine creation. From the first chapter of Genesis, language plays a pivotal role in revealing God’s character. The God who spoke the universe into existence created humankind in His image, and human language ability reflects God’s personality and reveals His Trinitarian nature. Our gift of communication shows our intense longing for communion with God and with other image-bearers. As language teachers, carefully stewarding this precious treasure, we follow His pattern of “speaking beauty into the chaos” of this world

What Does It Mean to Be Chosen? : an Interactive Bible Study

    No full text
This is the official companion study to season 1 of The Chosen, the groundbreaking television series about the life of Jesus. What Does It Mean to Be Chosen? parallels each episode, connecting readers to the Bible in a brand-new way. It includes: A deeper look at Isaiah 43 and its fulfillment in Jesus and the lives of His followers (including us!) Script excerpts, quotes, and illustrations from the show Guiding questions for groups or individuals Being chosen by Jesus has beautiful and far-reaching implications—although it says even more about the Chooser than the chooses. We are loved because He is love. We are saved because He is merciful. We belong to the family of God because Jesus invites us, making the Bible and all its promises as true for us today as it was for God’s chosen people. What does it actually mean to be Chosen? To answer that question, we’re going Old school—Testament that is—which leads us back to the New. Which always leads us directly to Jesus.https://digitalcommons.biola.edu/faculty-books/1532/thumbnail.jp

Reading to Listen and Writing to Speak: A Pedagogical Challenge for the Selfie Age

    No full text
A turf war between literature and composition has been waged for decades now in English departments across the country, reflecting academe\u27s broader reprioritization of professional skills over the liberal arts.1 On one side, we typically see traditionally trained Ph.D.s in literature who continue to teach close reading and theoretical approaches to literary texts from neatly demarcated eras (such as the Middle Ages for British Lit folks, or modernism for Americanists), to a dwindling number of English majors.2 On the other side are scholars of Rhetoric and Composition ( rhet-comp ), along with a contingent of adjunct instructors, who teach primarily First-Year Writing and other so-called service courses that sharpen the writing and critical thinking skills of the university\u27s diverse population. At a moment in higher education when students\u27 (and their parents\u27) return-on-investment (ROI) is of utmost importance-when they are paying a higher and higher price for degrees they hope and need to channel into professional success and financial stability4-English departments feel a weighty responsibility to teach the specific skills that employers demand: namely, critical thinking and written communication.5 Moreover, at a moment when diversity is rightly valued but often lacking or misunderstanding on our campuses, we increasingly work to foreground students\u27 perspectives by cultivating their abilities to tell their stories in their own voices. [...]I argue for the value of reading, and of teaching reading-as-listening, apart from the expressive skill of writing. [...]the danger of emphasizing writing about literature lies in the potential for misunderstanding the purpose of our response; the danger is that every story becomes a story about the self

Why Are Progressive Christians Attracted to Universalism? How a Distorted View of God Distorts Our View of Good

    No full text
Why does it seem progressive Christians are drawn to a universal salvation for all people? There could be several reasons, such as religious pluralism, on which everyone has their own interpretations of God (or, “religious reality”). The key to “salvation” on such a view is moral transformation, which is possible in all the world religions. Still, there could be other reasons for this attraction. It might be a reaction against evangelicals’ exclusive claim that Jesus is the only way to God, which might strike some progressives as imperialistic. In addition, it might be due to shifts in their views of the nature of what is real regarding human beings, sin, our core need, and more

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Sex-Specific COVID-19 Clinical Outcomes

    Get PDF
To successfully mitigate the extraordinary devastation caused by the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, it is crucial to identify important risk factors for this disease. One such neglected health determinant is the sex of the patient. This is an essential clinical characteristic, as it can factor into a patient’s clinical management and preventative measures. Some clinical studies have shown disparities in the proportion between males and females that have more severe clinical outcomes or, subsequently, die from this disease. However, this association has not been unequivocally established. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to examine the association between male sex and COVID-19 severity. We systematically reviewed the literature, identified non-randomized studies that matched predetermined selection criteria, and performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the proportion of males among four disease severity categories. Appropriate assessment strategies were implemented to assess and minimize potential biases. The results of this meta-analysis indicated that males constituted a significantly higher proportion of those who had adverse clinical outcomes and died from COVID-19. As the coronavirus spread from the East to the West, male sex remained a consistent risk factor. Our results support the establishment of the male sex as an important risk factor for this disease. Early identification and appropriate medical care for males with lab-confirmed COVID-19 may substantially change the course of clinical prognosis, resulting in greater numbers of lives saved

Organisational commitment and culture: evidence of commitment in an independent sales force

    No full text
This article analyses the relationship between organisational culture and commitment demonstrated by independent sales professionals of a firm in the electrical cables and conductors industry. This study is based on both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Participants comprised all 42 professionals working in the company\u27s commercial division. Data were collected using interviews and documentary research. Two base scales were used to determine organisational commitment and organisational culture: IBACO and EBACO. Results indicate that a sales force, even when independent, might express commitment through the values of collaborative professionalism, and employee satisfaction and well-being, as well as the practices of fostering interpersonal relationships, external integration, rewards and training. The values and practices mentioned in this study may serve as insights for managers who wish to improve sales force commitment and consequently increase sales performance
