Research has shown that the present-tense novel poses significant logical problems of narrative 
mediation. For this reason, the current essay addresses the question of whether, due to these 
problems, the heterodiegetic present-tense novel is a case of unreliable narration. To this end, 
the essay first discusses the sustainability of the concept of unreliability. Its point of departure 
is the observation that researchers have created significant confusion by applying a 
characterological concept to literary phenomena. Despite an overwhelming amount of pertinent 
essays and monographs on the topic, the central questions raised by this concept are still highly 
contested: To which narrative instances can we plausibly apply the category of unreliability? 
Precisely which narratological aspects of the mediating instance can we account for using the 
category of unreliability? 
Using the example of Holden Caulfield, the narrating protagonist from J. D. Salinger’s novel 
The Cather in the Rye, this essay demonstrates which difficulties arise when we impute 
unreliability to a complex narrative instance. The lack of conceptual precision which comes to 
light in this novel not only leads – as in the case of Catcher in the Rye – to contradictory 
assignments of the category of unreliability in one and the same text but also to the constitution 
of a text corpus that is primarily characterized by its heterogeneity. This undermines the 
intersubjective use of concepts and, as a result, further literary knowledge. Therefore, this essay 
argues that we should abandon the concept of unreliability in favor of more precise analytic 
categories, instead of making the discussion of this category even more unwieldy than it already 
is by adding new definitions and thereby impeding agreement within the scientific community. 
In order to more precisely define the logical problems of narrative mediation of the 
heterodiegetic present-tense novel, the essay will first define the speech acts of narration, taking 
the temporal relation between the narrative procedure and the narrated events as the identifying 
feature. In the process, the use of the simple-past tense proves to be constitutive, not only 
because of experience in daily life with the speech act of narration but also and above all for 
logical reasons. Here, the preterit retains its deictic function of referring to the past. In terms of 
genre, the present-tense novel resembles drama, since there too the mediating instance makes 
use of the present tense as the marginal text does in drama. This is why we can also no longer 
refer to a narrative speech act in the case of the present-tense novel. Rather, the present-tense 
novel creates the same impression as the speech act of live reportage in daily life. Connected to 
this, however, are perspectival restrictions of the spatial and temporal type (predominantly 
zeitdeckende Vermittlung, where narrating time matches narrated time; uncertainty about the 
future, spatial fixity), but primarily with respect to the representation of another consciousness 
(extremely limited introspection). However, because the mediating instance in the present-tense 
novel tends not to adhere to these restrictions, we are confronted with a paradoxical form of 
narrative mediation. 
Depending on the design of a text, the reader can either become aware of this paradox or it can 
remain hidden from him or her. The latter is the case in Andrea Camilleri’s crime novel Il

tuttomio (2013), which aims to make the recipient as focused on the plot as possible and hence 
to heighten the suspense that is constitutive for the genre of the crime novel. It is probably for 
this reason that the present tense emerges more frequently in recent crime novels. This is also 
the case for Stefan Slupetzky’s novel Das Schweigen des Lemming (2006), although in this text 
the form of narrative mediation – in contrast to Camilleri’s text – is extremely conspicuous. 
The rhetorical prominence of the mediating instance and the technique of montage, coupled 
with the use of the present-tense, work to disrupt the illusion. Accompanying the suspense on 
the level of the plot is a meta-fictional layer that prompts the reader to reflect upon the 
conventions of the crime novel. 
The essay then briefly presents two texts which, each in a different way, legitimate the use of 
the present tense, so that the impression of a paradoxical form of narrative mediation does not 
at all arise. In Wojciech Kuczok’s novel Senność (2008), the mediating instance repeatedly 
creates the impression, through its particular behavior, that the present text is a screenplay, a 
genre for which the present tense is constitutive. In Vladimir Makanin’s short novel Laz (1991), 
on the other hand, the present tense functions as the tense which signals timelessness, thus 
underscoring the allegorical character of the text. 
Even when such strategies of legitimation significantly attenuate the paradoxical effect of 
present-tense usage, we nonetheless have to remain cognizant of the fact that the transgression 
of its restrictions raises fundamental logical problems of narrative mediation, since we cannot 
plausibly explain the accompanying enlargement of the mediating instance’s perceptual 
perspective. In this sense, we could regard the specific form of narrative mediation in the 
present-tense novel as a case of unreliable narration. This would entail, however, that we 
broaden even more the umbrella term of unreliability, as scholars have already been doing for 
some time now. But that would accomplish precisely the opposite of what scientific concept-
building should in fact strive for: namely, to describe textual phenomena with the greatest 
terminological precision and thereby to ensure agreement within the scientific community.

The narratological concept of unreliable narration is subject to constant debate. While this 
debate affects different kinds of problems associated with unreliability, one of the central issues 
concerns the application area of ›unreliable narration‹. Here, theorists discuss, for example, 
whether there are certain types of narrators that cannot be unreliable, whether some kinds of 
narrators are necessarily unreliable, or in which way other characters apart from narrators can 
also be unreliable. It is the first one of these questions that I am addressing in this paper: Are 
there types of narrators that cannot be unreliable? 
As I lay out in the first section of my paper, my argumentative starting point is the observation 
that previous contributions to the application area discussion neglect two basic theoretical 
distinctions that are necessary to find robust and detailed answers to the relevant questions. 
The first of these theoretical distinctions will be addressed in the second section of the paper. It 
concerns the narrative phenomena that are usually referred to as »unreliable narration«. As I 
will argue, these phenomena are very heterogeneous, and we must distinguish at least five basic 
types of unreliability whose application areas partially differ: 
(1)fact-related utterance unreliability: the narrator’s claims about story world facts are false or 
in a relevant sense incomplete, 
(2) fact-related cognitive unreliability: the narrator’s beliefs about story world facts are false or 
in a relevant sense incomplete, 
(3) value-related utterance unreliability: the narrator’s evaluative utterances are in conflict with 
a relevant value system, 
(4) value-related cognitive unreliability: the narrator’s evaluative opinions are in conflict with 
a relevant value system, and 
(5) value-related actional unreliability: the narrator’s actions are in conflict with a relevant value 
system. 
In the third section of the paper, I will then proceed to show that four kinds of narrator types 
have been conflated or confused in the application area debate: 
(a) heterodiegetic narrators: narrators who are not part of the narrated story world, 
(b) non-personal narrators: narrators of whom we know no features apart from them telling a 
story, or narrators whom we are not invited to picture, 
(c) all-knowing narrators: narrators who have complete knowledge of the story world facts, and

(d) stipulating narrators: narrators who generate the story world facts by narrating them. 
In discussions concerning the question of whether one or more of these narrator types cannot 
be unreliable, some theorists seem to assume that some or all of these types are necessarily 
connected. I will show, however, that there are hardly any necessary connections between them. 
After this preparatory work, I am showing in a step-by-step analysis in section four which of 
these narrators types can or cannot be unreliable in which way – and why. The results are as 
follows: 
Both heterodiegetic and stipulating narrators can be unreliable in all of the five ways outlined 
in section two. This outcome may seem surprising for the case of stipulating narrators. It 
becomes more comprehensible, however, if we bear in mind that only fact-related utterance 
unreliability is really impugned by a narrator’s ability to create facts by narrating them – and 
even here we can find a case where unreliability is very likely possible: the case of narratorial 
self-correction. All-knowing narrators, however, can only be unreliable in four of the five ways: 
It is, for conceptual reasons, impossible that all-knowing narrators are unreliable on the 
cognitive level with regards to the story world facts. Since they have complete knowledge of 
the story world facts, they cannot be wrong or ignorant about them. The case of non-personal 
narrators, finally, is the most complex. Here, it may first seem that non-personal narrators can 
never be unreliable – because as soon as a narrator is unreliable, we would know one significant 
feature of theirs, namely their being unreliable, which makes them personal. However, I will 
argue that, according to one reading of the non-personality concept, this type of narrator can in 
fact be unreliable on the utterance level both with regards to facts and values. This is because 
neither two conflicting reports by the same narrator nor the occurrence of problematic 
evaluative utterances in a narration – while often being sufficient for fact-related or value-
related utterance unreliability respectively – necessarily invite us to picture a narrator. I am 
closing my paper in section five by summarizing the results and pointing to some possibly 
debatable theoretical assumptions on which my analyses are based.

Some theorists on literary interpretation have suggested a connection between Monroe C. 
Beardsley’s anti-intentionalism and hypothetical intentionalism based on an implied author. 
However, a full exploration has never been attempted. I undertake this task in this paper. A 
close reading of Beardsley reveals that he assumes something very similar to the implied author 
in interpretation. I distinguish five types of fictional works in terms of their narrative mode and 
show that my claim stands in at least four of the five types. The significance of my argument 
lies in exposing the above version of authorism in anti-intentionalism. 
Beardsley is generally perceived as advocating the irrelevance of authorial intention to literary 
interpretation. The common interpretation of his theory is that work-meaning is generated by 
linguistic conventions, with intention playing no role in meaning-determination. All the 
interpreter needs is knowledge of public, linguistic conventions in order to recover textual 
meaning. 
Nevertheless, when dealing with the problem of interpretation, Beardsley explicitly talks about 
attributing textual meaning to a fictional speaker. Although he does not elaborate on the nature 
of this speaker, clues scattered in his writings point to the striking similarity of this theoretical 
apparatus to an implied author. The key lies in his presumption that every fictional work must 
have an ultimate speaker to whom meaning inferred from the text should be attributed. This 
claim is almost the core of an implied author theory of interpretation. 
A difficulty in classifying Beardsley’s view as a version of the implied author position is that 
his characterization of the story’s presenter might apply better to the story’s narrator than to its 
implied author. To test this, I examine different types of narrative modes to see whether the 
fictional speaker merges with the implied author in each of these scenarios. 
The first factor to consider for classifying narrative modes is whether the narrator’s presence is 
explicit or implicit. The narrative scenario in which the narrator is implicit can be further 
divided into two sub-types: either the story is told from an omniscient viewpoint or centers on 
the experience of a third-person character. In either case, the story is not told by any of the 
characters in the story; rather, it is told by an implicit speaker whose words the work purports 
to be. It seems reasonable to identify this fictional speaker with the implied author, for both 
function as the subject to which textual meaning is attributed. 
As for the narrative mode in which the narrator is explicit, this involves first-person narratives. 
In these, either the narrator is reliable or unreliable. When the narrator is unreliable, a 
transcendental perspective is required in determining the text’s meaning, because what is said 
ultimately in the work is not equivalent to what is literally said by the unreliable narrator. It 
follows that an implicit speaker has to be assumed and she again coincides with the implied 
author. 
Where the narrator is reliable but textual meaning transcends what is literally expressed, an 
implicit speaker is at play again. This narrative scenario is thus better classified as a case in

which the narrator’s presence is implicit. This leaves us with the narrative scenario in which 
the narrator is a reliable spokesperson for the implied author. 
The identification of the narrator with the implied author in the case last mentioned is 
controversial. The crucial difference between them is that the former is dramatized in the story 
while the latter is not. I accept that the narrator here is not happily called an implied author, 
though I also point out several similarities between the two. 
Finally, I discuss four complications to my argument. The first concerns multiple points of view 
in a story. To accommodate this kind of narrative, Beardsley could argue that an implicit 
narrator is needed to explain the definite meaning concealed behind what is literally said by 
different characters. The second complication is about the ontological status accorded to the 
narrator and the implied author. It might be objected that the two reside in different fictional 
worlds and this is what makes their merging impossible. But it is questionable whether this is a 
definitional feature of the implied author; moreover, the interpreter can take the implied author 
to be an instrumentalist concept and hence avoid talk about the ontological status of fictional 
entities. The third complication claims that versions of the implied author position developed 
by philosophers tend to be based on a contextualist ontology of literature; however, Beardsley’s 
account is acontextual. This is not true, for Beardsley has exhibited contextualist leanings in his 
writings. Finally, it has been objected that the formalist resources Beardsley has are not enough 
to guarantee a single right interpretation. But if Beardsley is actually a contextualist, contextual 
constraints will come into play and raise the chance of getting a single right interpretation. 
The article concludes by reflecting on the significance of the misrepresentation of anti-
intentionalism: it is the intention of the actual author which anti-intentionalism is against. The 
position in question is actually developed in an intentionalist framework based on the implied 
author.

Bo Petterssons Studie How Literary Worlds Are Shaped stellt große Fragen, die das Wesen der 
Literatur betreffen. Dazu gehören – wie er in seinem Vorwort vermerkt – unter anderem fol-
gende Probleme: »how we use our imagination and combine it with literary representation; how 
we deal with sorting out whether what we read is fantastic or real, reliable or not; how literary 
worlds are shaped by different basic modes and themes and varied in all sorts of ways […]« 
(V). Neben diesen Fragen, die Produktion und Struktur des literarischen Werkes betreffen, soll 
aber auch rezeptionstheoretische Grundlegung betrieben werden: Wie werden wir von Literatur 
beeinflusst und warum ist Literatur überhaupt wichtig? Es handelt sich offenkundig um ein 
Buch, das trotz seines schmalen Umfangs einen universellen Anspruch vertritt.  
Um es gleich vorweg zu sagen: Pettersson hat eine inspirierte Studie vorgelegt, elegant ge-
schrieben und reich an einschlägigen Beispielen. Das grundsätzliche Ziel ist der Entwurf einer 
komparatistischen Poetik (»comparative poetics«, 267), eines kulturübergreifenden Modells li-
terarischer Welten, das dazu dienen soll, die Literaturwissenschaft zu »revitalisieren« (266). 
Dieser Anspruch kann allerdings nicht vollständig eingelöst werden. Das liegt vor allem an der 
disparaten Struktur des Buches, die sich daraus erklärt, dass – wie es im Vorwort heißt – über 
ein Drittel auf bereits veröffentlichtem Material beruht. Es stellt sich die Frage, warum die Ar-
beit nicht als Sammlung von Aufsätzen zu zentralen Problemen der Literaturforschung (Imagi-
nation, Metaphern, unzuverlässiges Erzählen) veröffentlicht wurde. So scheitern die 
reichhaltigen Einzelstudien an einem Kohärenzanspruch, dem sie sich gar nicht hätten stellen 
müssen.  
Die Studie gliedert sich in drei Teile mit je drei Unterkapiteln. Der erste Teil widmet sich ge-
nerellen literaturtheoretischen Konzepten wie Imagination, Mimesis und erzählerischer Unzu-
verlässigkeit, der zweite Teil beschäftigt sich mit der spezifischen Frage nach der Struktur 
literarischer Welten, und der dritte Teil bietet rezeptionstheoretische Überlegungen zur Wir-
kung von literarischen Texten auf die Leser. Als Einstieg dient ein detaillierter Überblick über 
die Diskussion um das Wesen der Imagination (Kapitel 1). Pettersson definiert imagination 
zunächst als »way of thinking of the possible« (11). Ausgehend von der platonischen Skepsis 
gegenüber der Vorstellungskraft werden die Linien einer Theoriegeschichte der Imagination 
nachgezeichnet. Dabei kritisiert Pettersson vor allem, dass die jüngere Forschungsgeschichte 
den Aspekt der kollektiven Imagination zu wenig berücksichtigt habe. Diese Kluft zwischen 
individueller und kollektiver Imagination soll durch ein Konzept kultureller Kontextualisierung 
überbrückt werden: »imagination relies on popular imagination and, in the final analysis, on a 
culture (or cultures)« (31).  
 
Daran schließt ein Kapitel über Mimesis als Grundlage von Literatur an. Pettersson schreibt: 
»not surprisingly, imagination has a basis in the world we know« (42). Und tatsächlich erscheint 
die Erkenntnis, dass literarische Werke auf der Möglichkeit beruhen, sich (nicht existente)

Dinge vorzustellen, die sich auf (existente) Dinge unserer Realität beziehen, kaum überra-
schend. Gerade die Überlegungen zu Beginn der Studie zeigen zuweilen, dass der universelle 
Anspruch dazu führen kann, allzu Bekanntes zu reproduzieren, etwa wenn es heißt: »It is this 
as if quality that is based on the real world and comments on it in different ways that this study 
will explore« (48). Oder: »It is important that imagination is not regarded as a mere or late 
addition to the human cognition, but as a fundamental activity by which we navigate in the 
world and understand who we are« (48–49).  
Pettersson plädiert ausgehend von seinen Überlegungen zu Imagination und Mimesis für eine 
Aufhebung der strengen Grenzen zwischen Realismus und Fantastik. Insbesondere soll es da-
rum gehen, nachzuweisen, dass die von Ian Watt in seiner berühmten Studie The Rise of the 
Novel (1957) untersuchten realistischen Erzählformen sich nicht erst zu Beginn des 18. Jahr-
hunderts entwickelten und nicht nur im realistischen Roman, sondern auch in literarischen Wer-
ken der Vormoderne sowie in fantastischer oder experimenteller Literatur auftreten. So gebe es 
›detaillierte‹ Charakterisierungen von Figuren auch in antiker chinesischer Lyrik (vgl. 54), die 
extremen Umstände der Figuren in Becketts Dramen lassen den Geisteszustand dieser Figuren 
durchaus verständlich erscheinen (»even psychologically realistic«, ebd.), und eine ausge-
formte Szenerie (»setting«, ebd.) finde sich auch in Erzählungen vor dem realistischen Roman, 
etwa in der Aithiopiká von Heliodorus. Dazu kommen die zahlreichen Fälle, in denen sich rea-
listische Erzählstrategien mit fantastischen Elementen verbinden; beide scheinen sogar aufei-
nander angewiesen zu sein: »real elements may substantiate the fantastic and fantastic elements 
can enliven the real« (59).  
Allerdings stellt sich an dieser Stelle die Frage, ob Watt tatsächlich behauptet hat, die entspre-
chenden Erzählstrategien habe es vor den Innovationen Defoes, Fieldings und Richardsons 
nicht gegeben. Tatsächlich ging es ihm doch eher um die historischen Gründe für die Etablie-
rung einer in der Moderne einflussreichen Konvention der Gestaltung fiktionaler Welten. Diese 
Definition von ›Realismus‹ setzt nun einmal die weitgehende Abwesenheit fantastischer Ele-
mente voraus. Zudem folgen auch die Historiker des Realismus (neben Watt wird unter ande-
rem Erich Auerbach genannt) in Bezug auf die Detailmenge bei der Darstellung einem 
Progressionsmodell, das die Existenz ›runder‹ Charaktere auch vor dem ›Rise of the Novel‹ 
nicht leugnen würde. Das gilt erst recht für die Beobachtung, dass auch experimentelle oder 
fantastische Texte (etwa Science Fiction) realistische Erzählstrategien zum Einsatz bringen 
können. Diese Texte sind dann nur nicht mehr ›realistisch‹ in dem Sinne, dass sie von den 
zeitgenössischen Wirklichkeitsregimen abweichen.  
Im Kapitel zu unzuverlässigem Erzählen appelliert Pettersson dafür, die Aspekte von reliability 
und unreliability als zentrale Aspekte von Literatur anzuerkennen: »That is, pace the received 
view, according to which unreliability only at times colours literary narratives, I aim to show 
that all literary representation is inflected or modulated on a scale of reliability, which concerns 
narration, characterization and exposition in various combinations« (78). Diese weitreichende 
und einschlägige These wird unter anderem dadurch begründet, dass es sich bei Unzuverlässig-
keit, die sich in intentionalem Betrug oder nicht-intentionaler Fehlbarkeit ausdrücken kann, um 
eine anthropologische Grundkonstante handelt. In Bezug auf literarische Unzuverlässigkeit 
wird entsprechend ein Spektrum zwischen fallible (unintentional) und deceptive (intentional) 
eröffnet, das den Zustand der ›Verblendung‹ (deluded) als Mittelwert besitzt.  
Um die angebliche Allgegenwärtigkeit von unreliability zu begründen, werden die Fragen nach 
der Zuverlässigkeit von Erzählern und Figuren vermengt. So heißt es an einer Stelle: »Also, as 
Shakespeare’s King Lear amply shows, all sorts of unreliability can occur in a single work in 
drama too: Goneril, Regan and Edmund are deceptive, Lear and Gloucester deluded by them as 
well as fallible in that they do not at first recognize which of their children are reliable« (84).

Nun wird man kaum bestreiten können, dass es sich bei King Lear um ein Drama handelt, in 
dem es um verschiedene Formen menschlicher Fehlbarkeit geht, und um diese zu differenzie-
ren, kann das Spektrum fallible – deluded – deceptive sicherlich hilfreich sein. In Bezug auf das 
Problem des unzuverlässigen Erzählens erscheint der Verweis auf das Drama aber eher verwir-
rend. Die Zuverlässigkeit der Charaktere hängt nicht unbedingt mit der Zuverlässigkeit des Er-
zählers zusammen (abgesehen von der Frage, ob man das Drama überhaupt in die Diskussion 
unzuverlässigen Erzählens miteinbeziehen möchte).  
Die Erweiterung des Unzuverlässigkeitskonzepts geht bei Pettersson darüber aber noch hinaus 
und soll nicht nur Charaktere und Erzähler, sondern auch die Struktur der Erzählung betreffen. 
Definiert wird diese Form der Unzuverlässigkeit als »expositional manipulation« (97). Leser 
können durch die Informationspolitik der Erzählung auf falsche Fährten geführt werden, etwa 
durch den für Kriminalgeschichten typischen red herring. Damit wäre dann jegliche Strategie 
des Spannungsaufbaus eine Form literarischer Unzuverlässigkeit. Es gibt sicherlich gute 
Gründe, die für eine solche Ausweitung des Unzuverlässigkeitskonzeptes sprechen; an dieser 
Stelle zeigt sich aber auch, dass der Versuch, die Zentralität eines Phänomens gattungs- und 
kulturübergreifend herauszuarbeiten, zu einer gewissen Beliebigkeit in der begrifflichen Aus-
dehnung führen kann.   
Kapitel 4 ist das Herzstück der Studie. Hier wird ein Modell literarischer Welten entworfen, 
das auf einer geringen Menge einfacher Bausteine beruht (»rather basic building blocks«, 137). 
Der radikale überhistorische, überkulturelle und gattungsübergreifende Anspruch kommt hier 
am deutlichsten zum Ausdruck: »Thus, three overall modes and three themes seem to cover 
most, perhaps even all, of literature and appear in a range of genres and variations that have 
come and gone in various cultures throughout millennia« (134). Pettersson steht damit in der 
Tradition literarturtheoretischer Taxonomien wie Northrope Fryes Anatomy of Criticism oder 
anderer »more explicit narrative ›grammars‹«, wie etwa die Entwürfe von Todorov, Genette 
oder Greimas (116). Diese werden aber in die Diskussion des eigenen Entwurfs kaum einbezo-
gen. Petterssons drei Modi umfassen oral, visual und written. Allerdings wird nicht ganz klar, 
was mit ›Modus‹ eigentlich gemeint ist. Handelt es sich um den medialen Status eines Werkes, 
seine Präsentationsform, seine formalen Aspekte (es ist beiläufig von »formal modes« die Rede, 
126)? Oder sollen durch die Einteilung historische Entwicklungsstufen literarischer Repräsen-
tationstechniken markiert werden? Der kurze Abschnitt zu den Modi (vgl. 123–125) geht über 
diese Fragen hinweg und mündet in ein sehr allgemeines Fazit: »What all modes have in com-
mon is that they focus on representing humans or human-like characters, as speakers and 
agents« (125).  
Es zeigt sich, dass es Pettersson vor allem um thematische Einteilung geht, die in der Folge 
ausführlich diskutiert und an Beispielen erprobt wird, während die Modi in der restlichen Studie 
kaum noch zur Sprache kommen. Dazu heißt es: »Put simply, I think that literary world-making 
can be viewed as being about something and that aspects of its contents can profitably be dis-
cussed under thematic universals or main themes« (126). Diese universellen Themen sind chal-
lenge, perception und relation. Das Thema der ›Herausforderung‹ teilt sich in die Aufgabe, 
etwas zu tun und die Aufgabe, etwas zu verstehen. So lässt sich dieses Thema auch in der Lyrik 
finden, die die Bemühungen der Sprecherinstanz inszeniert, grundlegende Aspekte des Lebens 
zu verstehen (»the challenge of understanding such basic aspects of life«, 127). Das Thema 
›Wahrnehmung‹ bezieht sich darauf, dass in literarischen Texten verhandelt werden kann, wie 
Menschen die Welt oder das eigene Ich sehen. Das Thema ›Beziehung‹ schließlich bezeichnet 
die Möglichkeit von Literatur, vielerlei Arten von menschlichen Beziehungen zu dramatisieren.  
Diese drei thematischen Bausteine ergeben nun in ihren Variationsmöglichkeiten unendliche 
Formen literarischer Welten: »Just as in alphabets, the beauty of the few elements lies in their

combination and variation« (133). Allerdings zeigt sich schon in den anschließenden Fallbei-
spielen, dass diese Bausteine so allgemein gehalten sind, dass man sie in so gut wie allen lite-
rarischen Werken finden kann. Davon scheint auch Pettersson auszugehen: Unterschiede 
ergeben sich anscheinend vor allem in der Gewichtung. So werden in König Ödipus zwar alle 
drei Themen verhandelt (»it is so rich in its use of all three main themes«, 137), allerdings mit 
einem Schwerpunkt auf perception. In Geoffrey Chaucers Parliamt of Fowls gehe es dagegen 
vor allem um »human relations« (142) und in Virginia Woolfs The Mark on the Wall (auch hier 
werden »all three main themes« kombiniert, 146) vor allem um perception. 
Diese Einteilung zeigt erneut die Vor- und Nachteile des universellen Anspruchs der Studie. Es 
handelt sich um eine Perspektive, die  es möglich macht, den grundlegenden thematischen Ge-
halt eines literarischen Werkes herauszuarbeiten. Pettersson führt in kurzen Lektüren immer 
wieder vor, wie die Taxonomie als Instrument der Interpretation dienen kann. Und tatsächlich 
scheint es sich um drei Themen zu handeln, die überkulturell, überhistorisch und gattungsüber-
greifend zum Einsatz kommen. Allerdings führt dieser Ansatz auch zu einer gewissen Belie-
bigkeit. Zum einen sind die Themen, wie bereits angedeutet, so grundsätzlich, dass der 
behauptete Variationsreichtum verwischt wird; zum anderen wirken sie etwas arbiträr. Man 
hätte sich gewünscht, dass die Auswahl von challenge, perception und relation stärker begrün-
det worden wäre, etwa durch eine Diskussion alternativer Themen. Der zentrale Abschnitt zur 
Struktur literarischer Welten wird abgerundet durch ein Kapitel zur Interdependenz von »Figu-
res and Narratives« (Kapitel 5) und »Other Imaginative Inflections« (Kapitel 6). Hier geht es 
vor allem um formale Aspekte: den Zusammenhang von bildlicher Sprache (insbesondere von 
Metaphern) und Narrativen – und wie diese in vielfacher Weise konzeptuell und imaginativ 
verschmelzen.  
Der dritte Teil der Arbeit wendet sich Problemen der Wirkung zu: »How Literary Worlds Shape 
us« (Kapitel 7). Dafür wird das in den Anfangskapiteln entwickelte Konzept der kollektiven 
Imagination als Wirkungsfeld wieder aufgegriffen, um den großen Einfluss literarischer Texte 
auf die Menschheitsgeschichte zu erklären (»vast impact on human history«, 208). Um diesen 
Einfluss zu illustrieren, rekonstruiert Pettersson die Rezeptionsgeschichte zweier einflussrei-
cher Narrative. Zum einen geht es um die semi-faktualen Erlebnisse des amerikanischen Pio-
niers Daniel Boone, welche die kollektive Imagination der USA stark geprägt haben. Zum 
anderen wird die Wirkungsgeschichte der Erzählung The Battle of Dorking (George Tomkyns 
Chesney) analysiert, die 1871 eine fiktive Invasion Großbritanniens evozierte und damit das 
kulturell einflussreiche Genre der invasion fiction etablierte. Für Pettersson sind beide Narrative 
Beispiele für die Wechselwirkung von Realität und Imagination: »Real life affects imagination 
in its many forms, and in turn imagination can change life as we know it through literature and 
other media« (234). 
Diese sympathische (allerdings auch wenig überraschende) These wird ergänzt durch ein Ka-
pitel, das die Frage stellt: »Why Literature Matters« (Kapitel 8). Es soll also darum gehen, zu 
klären, warum Menschen in allen Zeiten und Kulturen Literatur geschaffen und rezipiert haben. 
Ausgehend von der traditionsreichen Horazschen Doppelfunktion prodesse und delectare, plä-
diert Pettersson für ein Primat des Vergnügens (delight), um die kulturelle Bedeutung literari-
scher Welten zu erklären. Ein weiterer Aspekt, der Literatur funktional attraktiv macht, ist ein 
»sense of wonder« (242), den sie in den Menschen auszulösen vermag. Es scheint sich um 
verschiedene Formen von Überraschungen und Irritationen zu handeln, die durch kühne litera-
rische Strategien erzeugt werden: »When we encounter striking literary usages in theme or 
form, we savour them and pause to wonder at the riches literature can hold« (252). Dem Befund, 
dass Literatur ihre Wirkung vor allem im Vergnügen und Staunen entwickelt, würde man gerne

uneingeschränkt zustimmen; leider wird nicht ausreichend erklärt, wie es zu diesen Wirkungs-
phänomenen kommt. Verwiesen wird zwar auf die Diskussion literarischer Imagination zu Be-
ginn der Studie, allerdings ohne den Zusammenhang wirklich deutlich zu machen.  
Das eingangs angesprochene Problem der disparaten Struktur wird hier noch einmal augenfäl-
lig. Die Kapitel verweisen aufeinander, bauen aber nicht ausreichend aufeinander auf. Andere 
grundsätzliche Probleme seien kurz angedeutet: In der Studie werden beeindruckende Mengen 
an Theorien abgerufen, um ein möglichst umfassendes Bild der entsprechenden Diskussionen 
zu zeichnen. Insbesondere die Kapitel zu Imagination (1) und Metapherntheorie (5) können als 
Einführungen in die Forschungskontroversen über diese umstrittenen Phänomene dienen. Da-
bei ist es aber verwunderlich, dass etwa die inzwischen sehr umfangreiche Diskussion zur Fik-
tionstheorie kaum eine Rolle spielt – und das, obwohl mit den literary worlds doch vor allem 
solche Welten gemeint sind, die aus fiktionalen Texten entstehen. Das führt dazu, dass einige 
Texte, deren Fiktionalitätsstatus durchaus zweifelhaft erscheint, als Beispiele für imaginative 
Welten herangezogen werden, etwa die semi-faktualen Erlebnisse Daniel Boones oder die zahl-
reichen vormodernen Texte. Man hat zudem manchmal den Eindruck, dass sich der kompara-
tive Ansatz teilweise in der Zusammenführung kulturell und historisch möglichst weit 
auseinanderliegender Beispiele erschöpft. Diese Auswahl hätte stärker theoretisiert werden 
müssen. Schließlich ist es auffällig, dass in den Kapiteln zur Wirkung von Rezeption die Dis-
kussion um den literaturtheoretischen Kognitivismus ausgespart wird; diese hätte dazu beitra-
gen können, die weitreichenden rezeptionstheoretischen Thesen zu begründen. 
Trotz dieser Einwände handelt sich es bei Petterssons Studie um eine anregende, oft provoka-
tive Einladung, sich wieder auf einer grundlegenden Ebene mit dem Wesen der Literatur zu 
beschäftigen. Dazu wird eine beeindruckende Menge an Beispielen zusammengetragen, die in 
oftmals instruktiven kurzen Lektüren vorgestellt werden. Es handelt sich angesichts der immer 
mikroskopischer anmutenden Spezialisierung der Literaturwissenschaft in jedem Fall um ein 
wichtiges Unternehmen, das dazu dienen kann, die allgemeine Diskussion zu revitalisieren – 
ein Anspruch, den Pettersson in seinem Schlusskapitel explizit macht: »My hope is that the 
comparative and analytical views presented in this study might help to reinvigorate literary 
studies, where in the last half a century or so some rather narrow, even abstruse, theoretical 
perspectives have been championed« (272).
