Investigation of landslide detection using radial basis functions: a case study of the Taşkent landslide, Turkey

    No full text
This paper investigates landslide detection over flat and steep-slope areas with large forest cover using different radial basis function interpolation methods, which can affect the quality of a digital elevation model. Unmanned aerial vehicles have been widely used in landslide detection studies. The generation of image-based point clouds is achievable with various matching algorithms from computer vision systems. Point cloud-based analysis was performed by generating multi-temporal digital elevation models to detect landslide displacement. Interpolation methodology has a crucial task to fill the gaps in insufficient areas that result from filtered areas or sensors that do not generate spatial information. Radial basis function interpolations are the most commonly used technique for estimating the unknown values in survey areas. However, the quality of the radial basis function interpolation methods for landslide studies has not been thoroughly investigated in previous studies. In this study, radial basis function interpolation methods are investigated and compared with the global navigational satellite systems, which provide high accuracy for geodetic measurement systems. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the various radial basis function models to detect landslides using a point cloud-based digital elevation model and determine the quality of detection with global navigational satellite systems. As a result of this study, each of the radial basis function-generated digital elevation models was found to be statistically compatible with global navigational satellite systems, resulting in displacements from the ground truth data

Protected areas are necessary for the conservation and enhancement of biodiversity. Wildfires are major threats to forests and other natural areas, because they may cause irreversible damages. The aim of this study was to analyze the perspective of experts (N = 284), from six countries of the Black Sea, on the current status and problems of protected areas and wildfires. Understanding their points of view could enhance future management on these issues in the region. Data collection was carried out for 9 months, using a web-based questionnaire. Wildfires were perceived as a serious problem in Turkey, Armenia and Greece but as a substantially less serious problem in Romania, Ukraine and Moldova. In Greece, Armenia, and especially Ukraine, the current designated protected areas are considered sufficient to maintain biodiversity, while in Romania, Turkey, and especially Moldova, more areas should be designated as protected. A major need in all countries (except for Turkey) is the increased use of information and communication technologies for both wildfire suppression and protected area management. Experts were divided on whether wildfire suppression and management of protected areas are interconnected. However, there is growing awareness of the adverse impacts of climate change in protected areas and the frequency of wildfires in the future. The most frequently suggested measures to alleviate these impacts were: changes in forest management and increasing public awareness for wildfire suppression, along with changes in forest management and increased staff training to enhance protected area conservation.EU INTERREG IV "Black Sea Basin Joint Operational Programme 2007-2013" framework, Black Sea Basin Programme, European Union (EU)

Purpose This paper aims to examine the widespread effects of service actors' verbal aggression on witness customers' intentions toward the service organizations through their self-conscious emotions. The moderating roles of the witness customers' empathic tendencies and the source of aggression are also examined. Design/methodology/approach In two scenario-based experiments and by adopting a multifoci approach, severity of mistreatment (aggression vs incivility vs no-mistreatment) and source of mistreatment (employee-to-employee and customer-to-customer) were manipulated to test distinctive effects of witnessing aggression on self-conscious emotions and intentions. Findings This study shows that witnessing aggression during service experiences negatively influences customers' intentions towards the service organization through self-conscious emotions. Moreover, empathic tendencies of customers make these effects more pronounced. It is also shown that witnessing employee-to-employee aggression has a stronger effect on self-conscious emotions and intentions than customer-to-customer aggression. Originality/value This paper is one of the first attempts to investigate the distinctive effects of witnessing aggression during service experiences and the roles of self-conscious emotions and emphatic tendencies

The world is currently experiencing a pandemic of an infectious disease called COVID19 which has drawn global intensive attention. While global attention is largely focusing on the effects of the coronavirus on physical health, the impacts of the coronavirus on psychological health cannot be overlooked. Therefore, this study aims to adapt the Fear of COVID-19 Scale into Turkish and investigate the relationships between fear of COVID19, psychological distress, and life satisfaction. Data were collected by convenience sampling method, which allowed us to reach total 1304 participants, aged between 18 and 64 years, from 75 cities in Turkey. In the adaptation process of the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, confirmatory factor analysis, Item Response Theory, convergent validity, and reliability (Cronbach’s α, McDonald’s ω, Guttmann’s λ6, and composite reliability) analyses were performed. Additionally, the mediating role of psychological distress on the relationship between fear of COVID-19 and life satisfaction was tested. The unidimensionality of the 7-item scale was confirmed on a Turkish sample. Item Response Theory revealed that all items were coherent and fit with the model. The results indicated that the Turkish version of the scale had satisfactory reliability coefficients. The fear of COVID-19 was found to be associated with psychological distress and life satisfaction. Results indicated that the Turkish version of the Fear of COVID-19 Scale had strong psychometric properties. This scale will allow mental health professionals to do research on the psychological impacts of COVID-19 in Turkey

Azo dyes are widely used in textile industry due to their easy production, high stability during washing and variety of colors. It raises concern over the ecosystem because of its structural features. Some advanced oxidation process that is tertiary treatment is one of the conventional treatment methods. Pollutants that cannot be removed by primary and secondary treatment are treated by tertiary treatment methods. Primary and secondary treatment methods are not generally sufcient for removal of azo dyes. For this reason, it has an important place in its treatment with advanced oxidation processes. The aim of this study is to investigate the efect of diferent parameters on color and COD removal yields of triple dye mixtures by Fenton method and to optimize with the Taguchi method. Moreover, the aim is to examine the relationship between these parameters and ORP by regression analysis, and the change of organic groups by FTIR analysis in the efuent. As a result of the study, it was observed that the parameters considered had diferent efects on COD and color removal. There was an increase in both color and COD removal only with the increase in H2O2 concentration. The highest COD and color removal yields were 95.8% and 99.3%, respectively. As a conclusion, Fenton process is a method that can be preferred in the treatment of textile dyestufs since the chemicals used are non-toxic, abundant and economical, and therefore, the operation cost of the system is quite favorable, providing advantages to compete with other advanced oxidation processe

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the student and school-level variables affecting Turkish students' science literacy using PISA 2015 data. In this way, we aim to build a hierarchical model of the variables predicting students' science literacy level. Particularly, when we consider the sharp decrease in Turkish students' success in PISA 2015, the implications of this study would be even stronger. Because of the nested nature of the data and a high intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) value (0.52), we performed hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analysis. As a result, we constructed a model including nine student-level and four school-level variables to predict students' science literacy scores. We classified the student-level variables into three categories as personal characteristics, variables associated with learning time, and variables associated with teaching-learning process. Similarly, we classified the school-level variables into two categories: school resources and learning environment in the school. While "weekly science learning time" is the most prominent variable at the student-level, "science specific resources", at the school-level, seems to be the most powerful predictor of students' success. One of the surprising findings in this study is that there is a significant negative correlation between "out-of-school study time" and science literacy scores. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the student and school-level variables affecting Turkish students’ science literacy using PISA 2015 data. Bu durumda; Sultan Hamid Düşerken/ Sultan Hamid Düşerken, Var Olmak/Biga 1920, Huzur/Huzur, Sinekli Bakkal/Sinekli Bakkal, Yeşil Gece/Yeşil Gece, Şıpsevdi/Şıpsevdi, Kuyruklu Yıldız Altında Bir İzdivaç/Kuyruklu Yıldız Altında Bir İzdivaç, Gulyabani/Gulyabani, Eczanenin Akşam Müşterileri/Fazilet Eczanesi, Sahib-i Seyf ü Kalem/ Dışarıdakiler eserlerinin incelemesi, tezin ana konusunu ve kısmını oluşturmaktadır.The chapter I of our study is titled “From Story and Novel to Theater”. In this section, first; Brief information about the novel, story and theater has been given. Later, the plays, whose subject was taken from sources other than novel and story, were evaluated. Chapter II, which was named “Theatrical Texts”; The studies conducted on the basis of articles before our studies were subjected to a brief evaluation. The main part of our thesis is “Ten Plays Made from Novel and Story”; We examined according to the method of text analysis of Prof. Mehmet Kaplan (in the form of person, time, place, events, ideas and messages). Texts made from novels and stories and plays made from these texts were analyzed one by one. In the "Conclusion" section of our thesis; this study was evaluated as the goals and results achieved. While our study was opened to comparative literature in one aspect, apart from the adaptation evaluations; on the other hand, he turned his face to the relations between the texts. Since novels and stories were turned into plays after their writing dates, we also listed our analysis according to the publication year of the plays. If the name of the novel has changed in this ranking, we have presented the name of the novel in parentheses next to the play. In this case, the examination of the works Sultan Hamid Düşerken/ Sultan Hamid Düşerken, Var Olmak/Biga 1920, Huzur/Huzur, Sinekli Bakkal/Sinekli Bakkal, Yeşil Gece/Yeşil Gece, Şıpsevdi/Şıpsevdi, Kuyruklu Yıldız Altında Bir İzdivaç/Kuyruklu Yıldız Altında Bir İzdivaç, Gulyabani/Gulyabani, Eczanenin Akşam Müşterileri/Fazilet Eczanesi, Sahib-i Seyf ü Kalem/ Dışarıdakiler constitutes the main subject of the our thesis
