Landslide susceptibility mapping and hazard assessment in Artvin (Turkey) using frequency ratio and modified information value model

    No full text
Landslides cause loss of lives and serious material damage almost every year around the world. In Turkey, risks related to landslides increase due to the combined effects of climate change, deforestation, uncontrolled urbanization and improper land use. Artvin is among the cities where landslides occur most frequently due to its topographical and geological characteristics. In the present study, landslide susceptibility of the Central district of Artvin was evaluated using the frequency ratio (FR) and modified information value (MIV) models. In the study, ten parameters affecting the occurrence of landslides were considered. 70% of the landslide inventories were utilized to create susceptibility maps, and the remaining 30% were utilized for validation. The success and prediction capabilities of the models were assessed using the receiver operating characteristics curve and area under the curve. The success rates of the MIV and FR models were calculated as 88% and 84.9%, respectively, and the prediction rates were computed as 82.7% and 81.9%, correspondingly. The MIV model showed a slightly better performance compared to the FR model in terms of prediction and success rates. It was also determined that most of the village built-up areas, as well as the majority of the planned areas of the Artvin Municipality and majority of the public and private buildings within the municipal boundaries, were located in landslide susceptible zones. Therefore, the outcomes of the present study may assist local administrators, planners, and engineers in reducing the damage caused by landslides and planning the optimal land use

Social media use has become part of daily life for many people. Earlier research showed that problematic social media use is associated with psychological distress and relationship satisfaction. The aim of the present study was to examine the mediating role of psychological distress in the relationship between social media addiction (SMA) and romantic relationship satisfaction (RS). Participants comprised 334 undergraduates from four mid-sized universities in Turkey who completed an ofine survey. The survey included the Relationship Assessment Scale, the Social Media Disorder Scale, and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale. According to the results, there were signifcant correlations between all variables. The results also indicated that depression, anxiety, and stress partially mediated the impact of SMA on RS. Moreover, utilizing the bootstrapping procedure the study found signifcant associations between SMA and RS via psychological distress. Consequently, reducing social media use may help couples deal with romantic relationship dissatisfaction, thereby mitigating their depression, anxiety, and stress

This study is a part of a Ph.D. study at Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa, Istanbul, Turkey, and financially supported by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) (Project No: 115O934) and The Coordination Unit for Scientific Research Projects (BAP), Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa (Project No: 24880).Even though oriental spruce (Picea orientalis L.), a common species in the East Black Sea Region of Turkey, is used in a wide range of applications, its wood has low permeability. This study investigated the degradation effects of the bioincising process to improve its treatability with wood preservatives on the microstructure of oriental spruce wood. Test samples were previously subjected to bioincising by Physisporinus vitreus fungus, and the bioincised samples were examined under both a light microscope and scanning electron microscope to observe the effects of the bioincising on the anatomical properties. Bordered pits on the longitudinal tracheid radial walls, piceoid-type cross-field pits, ray tracheid bordered pits, and ray tracheid cell walls in the earlywood and latewood regions within a growth ring were particularly subjected to anatomical evaluations. In the study, the degradation intensity in the samples after the bioincising was well correlated with the weight losses occurred. Splits and factures were determined on the tori of bordered pits on the tracheid cell walls while tears and cracks were present on the pit apertures. The results also show that P. vitreus, a Type I and II white rot fungus, may cause a Type I soft rot

Cyclic shear displacement model for reinforced concrete columns

    No full text
Lateral response of reinforced concrete (RC) columns can be modeled and simulated considering three displacement components: flexural displacement, displacement due to slippage of longitudinal bars at column ends, and shear displacement. The incorporation of shear displacement in a computational model is essential for accurate calculation of lateral load–displacement relationship. The contribution of shear displacement can be significant for RC columns with low displacement capacity or ductility. An easy-to-apply shear displacement model is proposed in this study, and implemented in the open source software, OpenSees. The proposed model is based on a pre-defined envelope or monotonic model and does not require updating of modeling parameters during each cycle. The model is validated using experimental data. New rules are developed for the cyclic model to capture the effects of cracking and change in stiffness and strength during the loading and unloading cycles. Comparison of the calculated and measured shear displacements indicates that the cyclic shear response can be captured by the proposed model

With its natural, historical, and cultural resources, the city of Amasya offers very valuable potential in terms of tourism. The city center was taken under the protection of the ‘Tourism Incentive Law’ (no. 2634) in 1982. The most notable parts of this potential include the historical texture of the city center in particular and the areas where nature tourism and thermal tourism are carried out in the vicinity of the city. However, in addition to the positive aspects of the city in terms of tourism, there are also negative factors such as the inefficient use of resources, insufficient publicity, and lack of tourism planning. In order to determine the tourism potential of the city of Amasya, this study, by using a SWOT analysis, aimed to reveal the strengths and weaknesses of the city in the field of tourism as well as its opportunities and the threats that it faces. For this purpose, first, a literature review was carried out, followed by a field study, and the current situation and the types of tourism in the city were determined. Using this information, a survey consisting of four questions was prepared. In order to evaluate the SWOT survey objectively, a workshop entitled ‘Evaluation of Amasya City Landscape Components in Terms of Tourism (AKPBTAD)’ was held at the Büyük Amasya Hotel on 26 June 2018, with tourismrelated stakeholders in attendance. Participants included the provincial governor, the university rector, representatives from various public institutions, hotel operators, tourism association officials, tourist guides, neighborhood representatives, self-employed individuals, and academicians. The SWOT survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews with a total of 95 of these experts. The frequency (percentage) values of the SWOT survey responses were calculated using the SPSS 16.0 program. The findings included recommendations for improving the city of Amasya in terms of tourism planning.

Landslide susceptibility maps provide crucial information that helps local authorities, public institutions, and land-use planners make the correct decisions when they are managing landslide-prone areas. In recent years, machine-learning techniques have become very popular for producing landslide susceptibility maps. This study aims to compare the performance of these machine learning models with the traditional statistical methods used to produce landslide susceptibility maps. The landslide susceptibility for Ardanuc, Turkey was evaluated using three models: logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), and random forest (RF). Ten parameters that are efective in landslide occurrence are used in this study. The accuracy and prediction capabilities of the models were assessed using both the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under the curve (AUC) methods. According to the AUC method, the success rate of the LR, SVM, and RF models was 83.1%, 93.2%, and 98.3%, respectively. Further, the prediction rates were calculated as 82.9% (LR), 92.8% (SVM), and 97.7% (RF). According to the verifcation results, RF and SVM models outperformed the traditional LR model in terms of success and prediction rate. The RF model, however, performed better than the SVM model in terms of success and prediction rates. The landslide susceptibility maps produced as a result of this study can guide city planners, local administrators, and public institutions related to disaster management to prevent and reduce landslide hazards. This study was supported by the Scientific Research Projects Office of Artvin Coruh University (ACuBAP) (Scientific Research Project No. 2019. Transmuted unit rayleigh quantile regression model: alternative to beta and kumaraswamy quantile regression models

    No full text
In this paper, a new alternative unit distribution is presented. It consists of applying the quadratic transmutation scheme with the unit Rayleigh distribution. The quantile regression model of the proposed distribution is developed, as well as the maximum likelihood estimation of the unknown regression model parameters. We consider a real data application that links a measure of the educational attainment of OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries with some of their Better Life Index such as life satisfaction, homicide rate, and voter turnout. It is shown that the proposed quantile regression model provides a better fit than well-known regression models in the literature when the unit response variable has skewed observations and outliers
