Green Island’s Smart Footprint
Full text linkThe purpose of this work is to introduce, examine and provide a contextual overview for Taiwan’s achievements in the IT sector and to outline a current context for future trends in Taiwan’s IT evolution. To achieve this goal, this work analyzes the forces in play involving IoTs, Big Analytics, Open Data, and Smart City initiatives— and how these forces are merging in Taiwan today within a global arena. More specifically, this work examines both local and global industry partnerships, practices in sound governance, and current accomplishments in Smart City initiatives and how these forces will be a catalyzing force that embraces an emerging digital broadband environment and the market demands it brings.Research shows that Taiwan has effectively established an environment conducive for continual success in Smart City development and forging global collaborations in IT development that buoy cross-border fertilization in innovation and know-how. For these things to happen in Taiwan specific precursors must be firmly established. Taiwan’s building blocks in its IT sector are not exclusive to its OEM/ODM manufacturing and semiconductor know-how, but also extends to its ICT advancements, IT solutions and system service provider capacities, and a regulatory environment that has laid the foundations for the next epoch in its IT evolution— its burgeoning Smart City technologies, applications in digital services, and software development.The implications from this examination are far reaching. Taiwan is in a position to leverage its current accomplishments in IT development and open governance to capture and harness future IT trends in the globally-driven IT marketplace. Taiwan’s current regulatory environment and industry success will be a boon to accomplish next steps in its digital evolution and IT knowhow. Ongoing advancement in its “digital inclusion” strategies will be part of the mix in leveraging Taiwan’s success in Smart City development and utilization of IoTs, Big Analytics, embedded sensor technologies, and a rapid expansion in APP creation promoting digital services for urban landscapes. In summary, the crux of this work demonstrates how Taiwan’s IT sector is adapting and responding to new IT trends and developing innovative ways to cultivate global markets in IT development through both public and industry support mechanisms and Smart City initiatives

Supervisory Board group dynamics as a determinant of team and company effectiveness. Empirical evidence from Poland
Full text linkThe structure and functioning of Supervisory Board are the most important determinants of team effectiveness and the performance of a company. At the same time ability to control and shape Top Management Team (TMT) effectiveness seems to be crucial for investors and shareholders. In traditional concepts, TMT effectiveness is related to the structure of the managing group, however the inconsistency of empirical studies implies further search for other explanations. One of them is a concept of group dynamics, which emphasizes indirectness of the relation between group characteristics and group effectiveness, as well as the importance of group processes, such as effort norms, cognitive conflict or group cohesiveness. The study conducted among companies listed on the main market of Warsaw Stock Exchange (Poland) enabled the construction of model illustrating the above relations. Moreover, the significance of group processes for team effectiveness was explored. The paper has been prepared in the framework of research project which was funded by the National Science Centre, decision no. UMO-2011/01/N/HS4/02166.

Institutional Labour Market Segmentation in China
Full text linkAs the excessive labour market segmentation has negatively affected China’s social and economic development in many ways, this paper describes the status quo of China’s labour market segmentation and the segmentation’s history since 2000. In addition, the paper analyzes institutional factors that affect labour market segmentation among different groups and assesses the effects of specific policies that are closely related to the development of the labour market. More specifically, this paper reviews key labour market policies and programs introduced during the last decade and analyzes the impact of the Minimum Wage Policy, the Labour Contract Law and the Household Registration System (hukou) on labour market segmentation. At last, it offers several policy recommendations to reduce the China’s labour market segmentation
Non-profit Organizations in China and Their Future Prospects
Full text linkChina’s Non-profit Organizations (NPO) were integrated into the government after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Civilian organizations literally disappeared. After 1978, China’s landmark reform date, non-profit organizations started to re-emerge. In more recent years, with rapid economic development and multiplication of social demands, particularly the push of the Olympic Games and the Sichuang Earthquake, nonprofit organizations have grown exponentially. They start to play more and more important roles in fulfilling the social services gaps left by the government and the businesses. However, the current NPO registration system and dual management system have constrained the development of NPOs and many newly emerged grassroots NPOs do not have legal personality. Up to date, the government has passed relevant laws and regulations relaxing its traditionally tight control over civilian organizations, and the NPOs are also joining hands to promote the change of governmental regulations in favor of NPO development. Presumably, the ever increasing NPOs will lead to the change of China’s NPO governance rules and regulations, help with China’s NPO growth, and eventually, strengthen China’s civil society
Service-Oriented Government in Practice: A Case of Construction of Nanjing Community
Full text linkChina’s reform and opening up and socialist market economy in-depth developing have induced civic consciousness waking and democratic degree deepening, and then China government has to strengthen the social management and public services. Therefore, the practice and exploration of service-oriented government construction has been launched in China. This paper mainly inspects the status for the local service-oriented government construction and variety of influencing factors by the case of Nanjing. And the results indicate that China government have opened freedom and democracy with the service theory and start the construction of service-oriented government based on the local values in practice
