Nordmann and Noble fir -Determination of Elastomechanical Properties by Non-Destructive and Destructive Testing
Following storm and calamity events in Europe since the early 2000s, many forest owners decided to establish Christmas tree plantations featuring Nordmann fir (Abies nordmanniana (STEV.) SPACH) and Noble fir (Abies procera REHD.), which are currently transformed into high forests. Climate-related forest damages and calamities result in significant depletion of spruce since 2018. Future forests should be characterized by a climate-adaptable variety of tree species. Nordmann and Noble fir represent possible alternatives to spurce, however from European origin they are not yet integrated into European standardization and therefore cannot be used for load bearing construction products. Consequently, an assessment of the potential of Nordmann and Noble fir of German origin for use in Glued Laminated Timber (GLT) is conducted. Selected tensile, compression, shear, and bending properties in various anatomical directions are determined on small, defect-free samples with destructive and non-destructive methods to establish input parameters for Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
The Product Environmental Footprint – A Critical Review
The product environmental footprint (PEF) is one of two life cycle assessment methods from the European Commission. With their published recommendation on environmental footprint methods, the European Commission provides a framework to assess the PEF for every product in a company. Since there is a high probability that the PEF will be mandatory for companies shortly, it is crucial that this recommendation guides companies and mainly technical employees through all phases of the PEF and enables them to execute a PEF study correctly. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the process of calculating a PEF for a product critically. A PEF study is conducted on a smart luminaire with the software program OpenLCA. The use case concludes that many aspects of the PEF still need to be clarified. Especially the calculation methods behind every impact category need to be more transparent. Further, a comparison of the use case with a provided tutorial from OpenLCA is made. The comparison shows that no information is available on how to model the end-of-life and the use stages, which are mandatory in a PEF study. (c) 2023 The Authors. Published by ELSEVIER B.V
Reflections on twenty-five years of landscape ecology discussion in the German-speaking IALE community
In May 1999, about 30 people from Austria, Germany and Switzerland met in Basel (Switzerland) to found the German Chapter of the International Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE-D) to bring together Germanspeaking researchers, planners and other people interested in landscape ecology. Now, twenty-five years later, we take this milestone as an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of the topics that have shaped the landscape ecology discourse within the IALE-D community. In this editorial, we (1) present the history of the IALE-D conferences, (2) reflect on the topics addressed by the conference contributions and how they have developed, and (3) offer some initial indications of changes in relevance with regard to technological advances, thematic foci, transdisciplinarity, sustainability issues, and cultural dimensions that can be observed over time. Furthermore, we provide an overview of the articles published in 2024 in Landscape Online, which mainly reflect two emerging topics, which follow the lines of the thematic development of the IALE-D conferences, that is, a focus on urban environments as well as on pressing issues related to global change

Using data from a survey of 3,700 German establishments, this study examines how the adoption of new digital technologies correlates with key labour market indicators: new hires, workload intensification and workforce qualifications. Findings from interviews reveal a mixed impact of digitalisation on job demands and employment dynamics. While some firms experience workforce relief, others face heightened workload pressures. Despite widespread adoption, there is scant evidence of significant job losses attributed to technology integration. Instead, the data suggests a modest trend towards job creation. Notably, investment in workforce training emerges as a crucial factor in managing the digital transition

Zuschauerperspektive in VR-Applikationen
