Life styles and social welfare needs of the elderly who live on the Amami Islandsand the Yaeyama Islands : anxiety about future life, feeling that life is worth living, eating habits, health-care and welfare services, and regional issues (2)
The purpose of the study was to investigate the life styles and the social welfare needs of the elderly who live on the Amami Islands and the Yaeyama Islands through a questionnaire survey. The regions surveyed were the urban area of the Amami Ohshima (Amami City) and the rural area of the Kakeroma Islands (Setouchi Town) in Kagoshima prefecture, and the urban area of Ishigaki Island (Ishigaki City) and the rural area of Iriomote Island and Hatoma Island (Taketomi Town) in Okinawa Prefecture. The people who dwell on these remote islands are usually under unfavorable conditions geographically and economically and the communities there are under functional decline due to depopulation and aging. On the other hand, these islands keep the spirit of mutual helping and the traditional cultures.
In this paper we report analyses of the anxiety about future life, the feeling that life is worth living, the eating habits, the evaluation of health-care services and welfare services, the family finances, and other regional issues. The anxiety about future life was higher in the rural areas of the islands than in the urban areas. On the other hand, the feeling that life is worth living was higher in the urban areas of the islands than in the rural areas. Respondents were prone to eat poor-balanced meals. In the rural areas of the islands, while they expressed their dissatisfaction with regional gaps of health-care services, they showed high awareness of self-care about their own health. In the rural areas of the islands, welfare services at home were sometimes cancelled by bad weather or transportation trouble by sea. There was no difference in the family finances and regional issues between areas. Regional issues shared by all islands were the vulnerability to typhoons, high social expenses, and the anxiety about life in the future, and especially the elderly in the Setouchi Town listed more regional issues than those in other areas.

Children's religious spirituality and their behaviour at play with focus on early childhood
The purpose of this paper is to discuss religious spirituality in children and to re-evaluate their behaviour at play with this in mind. During childhood, particularly in the early years, children have a vague, innate sense of morality that does not relate to any specific religion and that can be seen as they play. For example, games such as spinning, tag, funeral games etc. not only contain religious elements such as ceremony and courtesy, but also offer opportunities for self-growth; encouraging them to recover quickly from disappointment, overcome setbacks and to consider others. Through play and experiencing the process of death and rebirth, children are exposed to an adult world that they have yet to experience.
In our country, we have historically avoided taking up morality in children as a topic of education. Although Froebel pedagogy, which emphasises the innate morality of children, was introduced in the Meiji period by American female propagators, it was soon overwhelmed by progressive education schools and Froebel' s theories and games lost their influence.論文(Article)departmental bulletin pape
Social Isolation among Elderly Persons Living Alone
application/pdf論文(Article)This study aimed to conduct an analysis based on a survey performed in 4 municipalities
which investigated social isolation among elderly persons living alone. This study was conducted
as collaborative research between the Minami-Nippon Shimbun and International University of
Kagoshima in September 2011. and obtained sample data from 1.000 cases with the support of
local welfare staff members. Although economic deprivation is often considered the greatest risk
factor for social isolation among elderly persons, this study also focused on differences between
urban and depopulated areas to analyze the data. As the results, the level of social activities and
sense of isolation were particularly affected by the level of income. This was marked in depopu
lated areas, where infrastructure has not been improved compared to urban areas.departmental bulletin pape
Empirical analysis of income inequality of Osumi and islands area in Kagoshima
application/pdfIt is important to clarify the current income inequalities among small areas in Japan because of economic and political reasons. However, some restrictions on data about their incomes complicate detailed analysis of the inequalities. We test the income gaps of Osumi area and islands area in Kagoshima with bootstrap method. The results show that there are insignificant differences of mean incomes and income inequalities between or within those areas. Thus, the living place of a family does not have an effect on the income level in Kagoshima.論文(Article)departmental bulletin pape

The measurement of inhabitants’ image of the village : the case of Shirakawa district of Kagoshima
application/pdf論文(Article)This study was conducted in corporation with the prefectural bureau for rural development in
order to identify the image of a rural district in Kagoshima prefecture of Japan. 51 questionnaires
were gathered from a wide variety of residents in age, jobs and hamlets, and the results were
analyzed by primary factor analysis, cluster analysis and Hayashi’s quantification method type I.
The result of the analysis indicates that there can be separated three groups that have different
images to the village. The quantification analysis suggests that the differences of villagers’ image
can be partially explained by age and hamlet, but the relationship between the image profile and
the attributes of villagers is not strong, nor monotonic.departmental bulletin pape
