Curcumin is a phytochemical which is extracted from Turmeric root. It is used as Ayurvedic Medicine. Curcumin (diferuloylmethane) is a yellow pigment present in the turmeric (Curcuma longa) which gives the yellow color to turmeric that has been associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiviral, and antibacterial activities. Curcumin, these effects are mediated through the regulation of various transcription factors, growth factors, inflammatory cytokines, protein kinases, and other enzymes. Most westerners know turmeric as gold colored Indian spice. Turmeric and curcumin are not the same thing. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory property of curcumin is much more potent in an extracted form. In the recent research findings of curcumin that it can also eliminate 3% of cancer stem cells present inside the malignant tumor and remaining 97% of cancer cells undergo gradual cell shrinkage which ultimately leads to cell death. Pharmacologically, curcumin has been found to be safe. Human clinical trials indicated no dose-limiting toxicity when administered at doses up to 10 g/day. All of these studies suggest that curcumin has enormous potential in the prevention and therapy of various diseases. KEYWORDS: Curcumin; Phytochemical; Curcuma longa; Ayurvedic Medicine

Introduction: The development of postoperative delirium is a mental disorder common among those aged 70 and over in the wake of the surgery. The impact of postoperative delirium can be severe and result in withdrawal and deterioration in patients quality of life. The purpose of this study was to identity the prodromal symptoms perceived by veteran nurses to reflect onset of postoperative delirium among elderly patients in Japan. Methods: Participants A total of 300 nurses, each with over five years of nursing experience and over three years of clinical nursing experience on surgical wards, participated in this research. Consent and investigative cooperation was obtained from the nursing director of each hospital who was then sent copies of the questionnaire. Each director was requested to distribute the questionnaires among nurses in the surgical wards Participants. That met the inclusion criteria of this study. Questionnaires were returned by post in accordance with a three-week deadline. Results: The following items were to be most characteristic of postoperative delirium onset: "Has been refrain", "patient\u27s mood is dark", "patient complains of wound pain", "patient refuses to roll over", "patient complains of urgency", patient experiences a constant urge to have a bowel movement, the wrong time, patient refuses to adhere to their diet, and patient is unable to effectively use the nurses call. Conclusions: The results of this research revealed that prodromal symptoms identified by clinical nurses can be categorized into six distinct areas: behavior, confusion, negative symptoms, sleep, delusion, and excretion.KEYWORDS: Postoperative Delirium; Prodromal Symptoms; Early Detection; Questionnaires; Japan

Choking is one of the important types of asphyxia deaths. The incidences of which are not uncommon. The choking in children could be due toys, coins, marbles, nuts and any other small hard object or even sometimes due to stuffed in plastic bags whereas in adults most of the times food bolus or hard parts of food like bone pieces are responsible. It is mostly accidental in nature.  It can cause coughing or sometimes airway obstruction leading to death. We present a case wherein a mentally ill person accidentally choked to death after consumption of food. KEYWORDS: Choking; Asphyxial deaths; Food bolus; Airway obstruction

TISSUE ENGINEERING IN REGENERATIVE ENDODONTICS -A REVIEW

    Get PDF
Tissue engineering is mainly used to replace the impaired or damaged tissues with new tissues. The key cells involved for tissue engineering are stem cells, the morphogens or growth factors. They will rapidly multiply and differentiates and forms tissues. This new technique is now most commonly used in endodontics. The aim of this study was to review about the dental pulp stem cells, which are most common growth factors, and the scaffolds used to control their differentiation. To study the clinical technique for the management of immature non-vital teeth based on this novel concept.KEYWORDS: Dental pulp stem cells; Morphogens; Scaffolds; Regenerative endodontics; Pulp revascularization

CORRELATION OF CELLULAR AUTOLYTIC CHANGES IN BONE MARROW WITH POST-MORTEM INTERVAL

    Get PDF
Estimation of post mortem interval is of great importance in both civil and criminal disputes. Determining time since death is extremely difficult and accuracy can never be met. Most of the methods currently employed are temperature based algorithms, rigor mortis, livor mortis, thanato-chemistry etc. But the uncertainties attaching to traditional means of establishing the time since death have directed attention to the chemical changes in the body fluids like cerebrospinal fluid and vitreous humour along with various cellular changes in the body tissues. The study of the viability and morphological changes seen in the cells of various body tissues could provide useful information regarding post-mortem interval. In our study the cellular and cytoplasmic changes observed were time related up to 16 hours. KEYWORDS: Post mortem interval; Cellular changes; Cytoplasmic changes

    Get PDF
Context: It has been proved from many epidemiological studies that the inhalation of the radioactive, inert gas radon (222Rn) is the main cause of lungs cancer after smoking. Objective: The survey was conducted to estimate the indoor radon concentration, the annual effective dose rate and the annual dose equivalent rate to the lung. Material and Methods: Altogether 50 dwellings were chosen randomly at 5 different districts of Nepal. The dosimetric measurements were carried out over a period of 3 months using time-integrated passive radon detectors, CR-39 based on type II Solid State Nuclear Track Detector (SSNTD) technique. The type of houses was concrete with plastered walls and mud house. Results: The minimum concentration of radon in the study areas was found to be <20Bq.m-3 and the maximum concentration was 110±20Bq.m-3. Also the corresponding values of annual effective dose and annual equivalent dose to the lung respectively varied from <0.60 to 3.30mSv.y-1 and 0.16—10-7 to 0.88×10-7 Sv.y-1. The uncertainty was measured at 95% confidence level. Conclusion: The indoor radon concentration varies considerably with the ventilation condition, lifestyle of the people, construction of the dwellings and climate of the areas. The measurements show that the radon concentrations were found to be well below the reference levels of ICRP. KEYWORDS: Indoor Radon; Annual Effective Dose; CR-39; Ventilation Condition; Dwelling
