Methodology for Large-Scale Surveys of Household and Individual Diets

    No full text
Excerpt from the Introduction: This report summarizes technical information relevant to planning large scale surveys of the food consumption of households and the food intakes of individuals from which detailed data on nutrient content can be calculated. It includes (l) specification of concepts of food consumption measured by several types of data; (2) brief descriptions of alternative procedures used to measure concepts just specified, including those used in the nationwide 1965-66 household food consumption survey and the spring 1965 survey of food intake of individuals; (3) identification of several problems in evaluating alternative survey methods; (4) statement of criteria to be used here in evaluating alternative methods; (5) a summary of research findings relevant to evaluating alternative ways of measuring household food consumption; and (6) a comparable summary for individual food surveys

    Management of Arid Grazing Lands

    No full text
The activities were centered around management of arid grazing lands in the areas of: range and pasture management and forage production systems on arid grazing lands; soil/climate/vegetation relationships, soil erosion, conservation practices and programs; range and pasture forage quality, animal nutrition, range livestock health restoration, and livestock production and production systems; plant materials for range conservation, restoration and livestock production. We began our discussion in Beijing on July 18 and then proceeded to five principal sites for exchange of information on grazing lands. These included state farms near Hailear, Tong Liao, Baotou, Xilin Hot, and Hohe Hot

    Drogi do rozwiniętej gospodarki rynkowej

Vaccines on the Move and the War on Polio

The rising number of refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) presents new challenges for vaccine distribution and the spread of diseases. How do forcibly displaced population inflows affect infectious diseases incidence in host communities? Can a policy intervention that vaccinates children during their migration mitigate the impacts? To answer these questions, we examine the Pakistani mass internal displacement from the conflict-affected Federally Administered Tribal Areas in 2008. Using a difference-in-differences approach, we compare new polio cases in districts near and far from the conflict zone before and after 2008. The spatial distribution of districts relative to the historical region of Pashtunistan allows us to design a sample of comparable units. We show that a standard deviation increase in predicted IDP inflow leads to a rise in the new polio cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Poorer vaccination levels among IDP compared to native children in host communities are one of the main mechanisms. Implementing a vaccination policy targeting IDP children during their migration journey helps bridge the vaccination gap, with important welfare implications

Cropland Use and Soil Fertility Practice in War and Peace

    Get PDF
Background of Report: Statistics regarding prewar and wartime land use were developed by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Estimates of wartime use of practices and suggestions for postwar land use and practices that would be profitable to farmers under prosperity conditions were developed from the State-Federal cooperative study of desirable postwar adjustments, except as otherwise indicated. Many of these estimates and suggestions are also included in the printed report, "Peacetime Adjustments in Farming — Possibilities under Prosperity Conditions,” December 1945, which outlines the suggested level and pattern of crop and livestock production in comparison with the prewar and wartime situations. This report does not include data, quantitative estimates, suggestions, or discussion of all the important factors that are associated with soil fertility or other aspects of physical productivity. It is limited primarily to suggestions for postwar land use and practices considered by State Production Adjustment Committees, compared with similar items for the prewar and wartime periods. The practices considered here were primarily chosen from those that had been considered by the State Committees. The Committees believed that a material increase in the extent of adoption of these practices would be profitable for farmers generally within approximately a 5-year period, under the economic conditions outlined below. Certain practices that merit consideration within this interpretation, but for which the making of quantitative estimates is difficult, were no doubt omitted
