Factors Affecting the Most Prefferred Local Tomato Variety “Akikon” Purchasing Prices in Benin
Tomato is the most consumed vegetable of Africa. It is consumed by millions of people across the continent’s diverse religious, ethnic and social groups. Even though it is not produced everywhere in the continent, there are some countries having endowments and producing local varieties. As an instance, there are many local varieties grown in Benin Republic. However, within many local varieties of tomato grown in Benin, the mostly preferred variety and consumers’ willingness to pay for this variety and its characteristics haven’t been searched yet. This paper aimed to evaluate factors influencing consumers’ willingness to pay for their most preferred local tomato variety. Through a formal structured questionnaire prepared due on Hedonic-pricing model, data were collected from 223 consumers in Cotonou district of Benin Republic to identify the key factors that are most likely to affect consumers’ accepted premium price for the most preferred tomato variety. 51% of consumers preferred mostly “Akikon” (L.esculentum var. Pyriforme) variety. The average accepted premium was 0.28 USD and the price rises to 0.64 USD with addition of 200 FCFA (0.36 USD), the standard market price of 400 grams of tomato. The reasoning behind the excepted premium was analysed and shape, colour, freshness, size, variety preference and income had appeared as the factors that mostly affect Akikon preference
Analysis of Milk Production and Trade in Iraq
Dairy farming plays an important role in rural economies, not only creating new jobs for rural landless and marginal farm laborers, but also contributing to the national economy. This sector also contributes to rural poverty reduction and inequity, while providing nutritional assistance to thousands of rural households. The production and trade of milk and dairy products have been increasing throughout the world due to their importance to human health and nutrition. The aim of this research is to analyze the production and trade of Iraqi milk and dairy products. For this purpose, the FAOSTAT dataset was used. World milk production was 886.86 million tons in 2020, and it is expected to increase by 2025. The most significant milk producers are India (21.74%) and the United States of America (11.42%), followed by Pakistan, China, Brazil and Germany. According to FAO data, the total number of dairy animals in Iraq increased by 16.2% in 2020 (12.4 million heads) compared to 2010 (10.4 million heads). Iraq's dairy market is heavily reliant on imports, as the country's domestic manufacturers can only meet less than 10% of domestic demand. However, the country is also among the top ten milk importers in the Middle East. The countries from which Iraq imports milk and dairy products have changed over the years due to political problems. For example, while the rate of milk imports from Turkey varies between 7% and 20%, it is between 0% and 85% for Kuwait
Tarımsal Girdi Tedarik Zincirlerindeki Kilit Oyuncular: Zirai İlaç Bayileri
Dünya gündeminin önemli konularından birisi de artan nüfusun gelecekte nasıl besleneceğidir. Bu nedenle birim alandan daha fazla ürün almak için gerekli girişimler başlatılmıştır. Bu çerçevede ıslah, farklı kültürel uygulamalar, girdi kullanımının artırılması, hastalık ve zararlılarla mücadele gibi konular ön plana çıkarılmıştır. Hastalık ve zararlıların mücadelesinde kullanılan ilaçların çiftçiye ulaştırılması zirai ilaç bayileri aracılığıyla gerçekleştirilmektedir. Zirai ilaç bayileri çiftçiye sadece girdi temin etmekle kalmayıp aynı zamanda önemli bir bilgi kaynağıdır. Bu çalışma Burdur ilinde faaliyet gösteren zirai ilaç bayilerinin genel durumu ve özelliklerini belirlemeyi amaçlamıştır. Bu amaç için 58 zirai ilaç bayisi ile yüz yüze anket yapılmıştır. Sonuçlar incelenen işletmelerin %79.3’ünün erkek, %32.8’inin 1-5 yıl tecrübeye sahip, %87.9’unun üniversite mezunu olduğunu göstermiştir. İşletmeler zirai ilaç bayiliği ile birlikte gübre, tarım alet ve makinaları ve tarımsal ürün ticareti de yapmaktadırlar. İşletmelerin tarla günü, konferans, seminer ve tanıtım gibi tarımsal faaliyetlere katılımı yüksektir. Piyasaya yeni sürülen ilaçlar ile ilgili bilgi çoğunlukla firma yetkililerinden ve internetten temin edilmektedir. İlaç tavsiye ederken ilacın ruhsatlı olması ve insan ve çevre sağlığına daha az zarar vermesine dikkat edilmektedir. İşletmelerin tarımsal alana bilgi sağlayan kuruluşlarla işbirliği zayıftır. En önemli sorun fiyat istikrarsızlığı ve ödemelerdeki nakit sıkıntısıdır. Zirai ilaç bayilerinin ve çiftçilerin eğitimi, çiftçilerin bilinçlendirilmesi, zirai ilaç bayilerinin nakit sıkıntılarını giderecek çabaların ortaya koyulması önemli konular olarak değerlendirilmektedir
Effects of infection with Rhynchosporium secalis on some components of growth and yield in two barley cultivars
Two cultivars of barley, Numar and Briggs, differing in their susceptibility to Rhynchosporium secalis, but without any known vertical genes for disease resistance, were grown in replicate plots and either inoculated with race 74 of R. secalis or sprayed with Benlate for disease control. Measurements included height, numbers of various plant parts, leaf area, dry weight of plant parts, yield components and grain yield. Analysis of the data indicated the more resistant variety Briggs, outyielded the susceptible variety Numar, and differed in other growth components. Calculation of leaf life span indicated this was a key difference between varieties with respect to disease resistance. Further testing on the relationship between leaf life span and disease resistance is necessary, but measurement of leaf life span may be a useful tool in screening breeding material for a background level of horizontal resistance, as well as leading to better understanding of a mechanism of disease resistance
The Futures of Food in India: A 2050 Perspective
India’s ambitious aim to attain developed nation status by 2047 presents both opportunities and challenges for its agri-food system. The country’s rapid economic growth and urbanization are anticipated to significantly boost the demand for a diverse range of food products. However, fulfilling this increasing demand will necessitate a substantial transformation of India’s agricultural sector. The agrifood system will encounter a confluence of several biotic and abiotic pressures to produce the necessary quantity of food. This study projects food demand and supply under various economic growth scenarios to assess whether India can produce sufficient food and to evaluate the associated environmental consequences. The research offers critical insights for policymakers, industry leaders, and academics. These findings can be instrumental in formulating strategic, evidence-based plans to address the significant challenges and leverage the opportunities in food system transformation
Prevented Planting Buy-Up Coverage: Payments and Policy Changes
Prevented planting (PP) coverage has historically allowed crop insurance participants to receive indemnities when weather or other insured causes prevent timely planting, with an optional buy-up provision increasing payments by covering a larger share of pre-planting costs. On November 28, 2025, the USDA Risk Management Agency eliminated the 5 percent prevented planting buy-up option from all crop insurance policies. Using USDA Risk Management Agency cause-of-loss data, we document the distribution of PP buy-up indemnities across major crops and states and estimate the portion of recent indemnities that is “at risk” following the removal of the buy-up option. Results show that corn and rice account for the largest share of buy-up-related indemnities, with significant geographic concentration in the Dakotas, Arkansas, and California. A counterfactual analysis of the earlier reduction in buy-up coverage from 10 percent to 5 percent in 2018 demonstrates that prior policy changes already resulted in substantial foregone indemnities, particularly for corn and rice. Together, these findings provide context for the scale and distributional consequences of eliminating prevented planting buy-up coverage and inform expectations regarding future producer payments and program expenditures
