Historical introduction to ultra peripheral collisions
This is a brief history of photons, both soft and hard, real and virtual. About 150-100 years ago, Maxwell and Einstein discovered intriguing properties of electromagnetic fields and how to understand them both macroscopically and microscopically. Decades later, physicists developed the theory of renormalized quantum electrodynamics (QED), an incredibly accurate theory describing interactions of photons and other particles. Photons are used everywhere in academia and technological devices, from supermarket lasers and doors to academic studies in atomic, nuclear, and particle physics. In this article, I attempt to convey how the field of relativistic heavy ions rediscovered ultra-peripheral collisions (UPC) as a source of intense, almost real photons, and how it permits the study of a plethora of phenomena in the aforementioned academic fields. Light-by-light scattering in ultraperipheral collisions of heavy ions with future FoCal and ALICE 3 detectors
I present possible future studies of light-by-light scattering using FoCal@ALICE and ALICE 3 detectors. Different mechanisms are discussed. The PbPb → PbPb γγ cross section is calculated within the equivalent photon approximation in the impact parameter space. Several differential distributions are presented and discussed.
We predict the cross section in the (mb-b) range for typical ALICE 3 cuts, a few orders of magnitude larger than for the current ATLAS or CMS experiments. We also consider the two-π⁰ background, which can, in principle, be eliminated in the new kinematical range for the ALICE 3 measurements by imposing dedicated cuts on diphoton transverse momentum and/or so-called vector asymmetry
Familiarizing Lynching: Intimacy, Kinship, and Anti-Blackness in American Photography
This article examines the relationship between two sets of images from the nineteenth century: family portraits and lynching photographs. The latter have often been studied through the lens of spectacle with limited attention given to the less spectacular images that also comprise the visual culture of anti-Black violence in the United States. Drawing from other nineteenth-century photographs, such as portraits of enslavers’ families and white families associated with lynchings, the following study locates lynching photography’s origins in the intimate and the familial. This article strays from a focus on the spectacle of Black death and suffering in photographic representations of anti-Black violence and instead considers how the more banal, mundane representations of kinship shaped communal belonging and exclusion in the decades preceding and following emancipation. Placing lynching photographs within the broader milieu of nineteenth-century vernacular photography reveals how the hypervisibility of Black death and suffering came to be central to American understandings of familiality and kinship

A revision of the Neotropical bee genus Diadasina Moure (Hymenoptera: Apidae, Emphorini)
A revision of the emphorine bee genus Diadasina Moure is presented. These bees are exclusively found in South America, occurring eastward of the Andes mountains from northern Brazil to central Argentina. Four species are recognized as valid. The following synonymies are established: Melitoma paraensis Ducke, 1912, and Diadasia paraensis monticola Moure, 1944, are new synonyms of D. distincta (Holmberg, 1903), Diadasia parahybensis Cockerell, 1912 is a new synonym of D. riparia (Ducke, 1907), and Diadasia callura Cockerell, 1918 is a new synonym of D. singularis (Brèthes, 1910). Lectotypes are designated for Teleutemnesta distincta Holmberg, Ptilothrix adolphi Strand, 1910, and Diadasia callura Cockerell. A key to the species, descriptions, and illustrations are provided
Standardized protocols for collecting data on bee-flower interactions and the associated floral community
Pollen and nectar from flowers constitute the primary food resources of bees, inextricably linking bee and flowering plant communities in space and time. Thus, our understanding of bee biology and distribution can be greatly enhanced by documenting interactions between bees and their host plant species. Plant-pollinator interaction data are routinely collected in studies with diverse research goals, but the lack of standardization in data collection has limited our ability to integrate datasets and address outstanding questions in bee ecology, conservation, and pollination biology. Here, we provide standardized protocols for (A) documenting plant-pollinator interactions and (B) quantifying associated floral resources available to foraging bees. These protocols can be combined for a more detailed understanding of plant-pollinator interactions and can be applied in inventories, surveys, and monitoring programs of bees. We also provide case studies demonstrating their application. We discuss tradeoffs that are inevitable in any methodological approach, including the use of lethal versus non-lethal sampling approaches, and highlight the need to prioritize rigorous testing of the scalability and generalizability of current methodologies. These protocols are part of a series developed in association with the U.S. National Native Bee Monitoring Network to standardize bee monitoring practices
