    On Chilean Acting Training; Interview with Cristian Lagreze

    Since the 1980s, European techniques have had a significant impact on actor training in Chile; however, with the restoration of democracy in the 1990s, actor training started to change. Prominent professionals such as Cristian Lagreze, who received his training outside, have brought fresh perspectives to the Chilean setting. Lagreze talks about his experience as an actor in this interview, beginning at the University of Chile. He notes that the training process, which is moulded by emotional and physical conditioning particular to the sociological and cultural dynamics of today, aids trainers in developing a sense of identity and community. Students\u27 relationships with their bodies in training are being impacted by modern challenges like the effects of technology, capitalist pressures, and the increased awareness of gender and body politics. Lagreze also draws attention to the difficulties caused by the commercialisation of education, which makes students feel like customers. His observations highlight the difficulties involved in actor training in Chile and show how instructors must strike a balance between teaching conventional methods and the changing demands of contemporary actors

    Recent results on ultra-peripheral collisions with the ALICE experiment

    Recent measurements of J/ψ photoproduction based on data from ultra-peripheral Pb–Pb and p–Pb collisions recorded by the ALICE experiment during Run 2 of the LHC are presented. Photoproduction, as a photon-induced process, is sensitive to the structure of hadrons, and the results are of great importance for a better understanding of how gluon saturation and nuclear shadowing function in high-energy quantum chromodynamics. The energy evolution of coherent J/ψ photoproduction has been measured, indicating a strong suppression of nuclear gluon densities at high energies. The energy dependence has also been measured for exclusive and dissociative J/ψ production off the proton. The average distribution of nuclear gluon matter in the transverse plane, along with its fluctuations, has been studied for the first time using measurements of the dependence of coherent and incoherent J/ψ photoproduction on the transferred momentum t. Lastly, the data from coherent photoproduction of J/ψ in Pb–Pb ultra-peripheral collisions have been found to be compatible with a transverse polarization

    Assessing the state-of-knowledge of bees and their pollination services in Colombia

    Understanding the state of knowledge of pollinators and their interactions with plants is critical for planning and developing effective conservation strategies. Despite the many challenges in studying bee diversity and pollination services in Colombia, this contribution represents a preliminary effort to quantitatively assess existing information gaps. This is particularly important in regions of high biodiversity that have historically been understudied and are now facing significant environmental pressures from human activities. Based on a review of the literature, we present the first quantitative assessment of bee biodiversity, bee-plant interactions, and pollination services in Colombia. We analyzed 88 publications and extracted data across the following categories: i) bee diversity, ii) bee-plant interactions, and iii) assessment of pollination services. For each bee and plant species documented, we recorded taxonomic and geographic information, resulting in a total of 8,099 records. Most records report information on bee diversity (58%), followed by bee-plant interactions (29%), and assessments of pollination services (13%). Most records correspond to corbiculate bees (Apidae) from modified ecosystems in the Andean region, particularly at lower elevations. Studies evaluating pollination services are limited and tend to rely on qualitative methods. The implications of these results, taxonomically and geographically skewed towards common taxa and Colombia’s most populated areas, are discussed in the context of ongoing efforts to conserve pollinator populations in the country

However, examination of the holotype reveals that it is a junior synonym of Samba (Haplomelitta) ogilviei (Cockerell, 1932). This synonym is formally established in this contribution

    Ideology and Identity in Teaching about Russia in the United States: 1945-1950

    In 1945, predominantly white and male academics at elite postsecondary institutions, bolstered by nineteenth century industrialist wealth and connected to government and military elites, shaped and influenced the teaching of Russian in the United States in ways that remain traceable in the field today.Through critical inquiry the study finds that the field’s progenitors reacted to war and McCarthyism in ways that were color-blind, politically-averse, and self-preservational, exposing the roots of white supremacy and Russocentrism in Russian language textbooks. Critical race theory helpfully frames matters of anti-discrimination law and interest convergence regarding de jure and de facto forms of educational exclusion. The study locates and illuminates significant developments in Russian language instruction during and after the war. It also assesses and presents ideologies about teaching and learning Russian that were expressed contemporaneously by practitioners

    Comparison of Polyethylene Thickness and Constraint in Traditional and Robotic-Assisted Total Knee Arthroplasty

    Introduction. Thicker polyethylene inserts in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may be associated with increased wear rates, a higher risk of implant failure, and the need for revision surgery. The authors of this study aimed to compare polyethylene insert thickness in robotic-assisted TKA versus conventional manual TKA.  Methods. The authors conducted a cross-sectional study on patients with end-stage primary knee osteoarthritis who underwent TKA by a single fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon over a two-year period. Patients with post-traumatic or inflammatory arthropathy or those undergoing revision arthroplasty were excluded. Demographics, implant manufacturer and type, and polyethylene insert thickness were recorded in an electronic database. Bivariate analyses, including t-tests, Mann-Whitney U tests, and Fisher’s exact tests were used to compare robotic-assisted and manual TKA procedures. Results. Data from 222 patients were analyzed, with 111 in each group. The mean (standard deviation [SD]) age at surgery was similar between groups: 64.3 (8.2) years for robotic-assisted and 62.3 (8.8) years for the manual group (p=0.398). Polyethylene insert thickness differed significantly: the median was 9 mm (range 9-13 mm) in the robotic-assisted group versus 11 mm (range 9-16 mm) in the manual group (p<0.001). The most frequently used thickness was 9 mm, used in 70.3% (78/111) of robotic-assisted cases compared to 34.2% (38/111) of manual cases (p<0.001). Conclusions. Robotic-assisted TKA was associated with significantly thinner polyethylene inserts compared to manual, suggesting more precise, bone-sparing femoral and tibial cuts. These findings may support the use of robotic-assisted techniques by orthopedic surgeons seeking to optimize implant positioning and longevity

    Bridging the Gap from Classroom to Clerkship to Career: Informal Surgical Mentorship for Pre-Clerkship Medical Students

    Introduction. Mentorship is important in medical education, yet its specific impact on pre-clerkship medical students interested in surgery remains underexplored. We hypothesized that a formal but unstructured surgical mentorship program would increase students’ interest in surgery and improve their self-perceived readiness for the third-year surgical clerkship. Methods. In this before–after study, pre-clerkship students at The University of Kansas School of Medicine were paired with volunteer surgical faculty mentors. An initial one-on-one meeting was required, while the frequency and structure of subsequent meetings were left to the participants. Surveys assessing student confidence and perceptions of the program were administered via Research Electronic Data Capture® (REDCap®) before the program and again six months later. Changes were analyzed using the Wilcoxon rank sum test for independent groups (p <0.05). Results. Of the 47 students enrolled, 31 (66.0%) completed the pre-program survey, and 24 (51.1%) of these completed the post-program survey. After six months, students reported significantly greater confidence in their preparation and knowledge for the third-year surgical clerkship, surgical skills, and understanding of surgical career pathways. More students also identified potential residency letter writers. However, 87.5% of respondents reported inconsistent mentor-mentee meetings. Conclusions. A formal yet unstructured surgical mentorship program significantly improved pre-clerkship students’ confidence in pursuing a surgical career and preparing for the surgical clerkship. Despite inconsistent meeting frequency, the program enabled meaningful mentorship without requiring rigid scheduling or extensive time commitments from participants
