Synergistic Co-operations in the Cosmetic Industry: Learning and Convergence between Firms and Social Media
Hallyu’s creative content, in the form of dramas, music, and movies, has not only expanded and popularized Korean beauty (or K-beauty) products, but has also helped sell Korean fashion and aesthetics throughout the world. This study examines the various success factors behind K-beauty’s competitiveness particularly by emphasizing the interactive roles of creative content, cosmetic firms, and make-up artists working through their vlogs based on social media and the resultant convergence effects—which has propelled the rapid growth of the K-beauty industry. On top of the cosmetic firms that utilize diverse and effective strategies to penetrate the global market, professional and semi professional make-up artists have helped spread K-beauty beyond product sales. They offer make-up lessons on social media, which has become enormously successful in spreading Korean-style cosmetics. In this paper, the cooperation between popular beauty vloggers and firms is explained through the new role of social media. This study explains how the convergence of firms and vloggers has connected and established a business ecosystem that generates synergy through the four co-operations of co-existence, co-learning, co-creation, and co-evolution
Creating Pedagogy to Integrate Sustainability and the Arts
The creation of a sustainable world urgently requires managers of organizations to consider large-scale changes in the practices and policies of social and economic institutions. Compelling scientific and economic information on the environment, while the basis of much dialogue in higher education and in the public sphere, has failed to motivate adequate progress to date. In this article, therefore, we present an original theoretical model for a pedagogy that brings together the arts and sustainability. We postulate that motivation or “heart” to initiate such actions for the environment and persist in the face of societal and institutional inertia can come from the arts, particularly given their unique and time-proven ability to move the human heart in authentic ways. A sustainability pedagogy that utilizes the arts can be incorporated moreover into any discipline at any level of education. This pedagogy reaches students not only intellectually but empathetically as well, thereby increasing the depth and effectiveness of learning. Indeed, emphasizing the content characteristics of complexity, modernity, and equity/justice as well as incorporating student reflection/discernment, experiential learning, and community engagement will further enhance an arts/ sustainability pedagogy. In this light, we briefly examine some preliminary courses integrating the arts and sustainability in four different disciplines, including business. We find these examples indicate that the pedagogy suggested by this theory is a promising avenue to pursue. Finally, we provide some specific suggestions for instructors. New pedagogy that integrates the arts with sustainability can thus contribute significantly to the education of future and current managers, those who are essential agents in effecting needed change
(This article shows the anti-colonial nature of translating for children. It features examples of Filipino translations for children whose objectives are oriented towards the retelling and translations of Jose Rizal. The paper exposes the historic significance of these works by giving importance to the Filipino youth as a vital component of the hero’s hopes of achieving equality with the Spaniards. By creating retellings for the Filipino youth, Rizal is able to disassemble moralistic and religious systems that dominated Spanish rule. By choosing a fable and comparing it to other Asian texts, his retellings emphasize the power of popular culture as bearer and stream of counter-hegemonic and subversive sensibilities for the downtrodden. Meanwhile, in translating Andersen’s works to Tagalog, the principles for selecting texts and characteristics of a good translator are laid out, and the challenges it contributes to the development of our language. In the middle of all these, Rizal’s initiatives have set the path for children’s literature to make sure that its form will be accommodating of expressions of Filipino youth that goes above and beyond becoming passive followers of our colonizers. These works launched children’s literature as a flagbearer of local literature and which connects to the relevant literary practices from all over the world that is consistent in developing children with dignity, creativity and criticality.
