Competencies and Performance of Social Entrepreneurs in the Bicol Region
This article examines the competencies and performance of organizations that prioritize the “triple bottom line,” emphasizing social or environmental and economic dimensions, known as social enterprises. Social enterprises are vehicles for inclusive growth and sustainable development because of their drive to respond to economic, social, and environmental problems. However, Filipino social enterprises still face significant obstacles to growth. With mixed methodology, the study found that social entrepreneurs in the Bicol region obtained high ratings in performance attributed to their high social responsibility results and a medium rating in business performance. This article illustrates that social enterprises in the Bicol region should improve their entrepreneurial quality to upgrade their business performance. Furthermore, the study may provide tips for social enterprises in the Philippines to improve their growth
Writing and Being Human
Truth is as moral as political in nature. This relation must be asserted more than ever, especially when seen against the background of today’s social media phenomenon, where people express their views about anything and anyone at an unprecedented speed and reach. Within the context of the academic world, the search for truth serves as the moral foundation of authorship and guides the practice of academic freedom. Teaching by writing affects the formation of fellow human beings for good or ill. Thus, every author must write only what is true, in view of communicating factual information, and not “fake news.” Before a deluge of information on social media, academics must always ask the critical question: Is this true
It was a paradisical state: the body was allowed to be a body at Our Lady of Revenge.
The Sustainability Mindset Indicator: A Personal Development Tool
This paper addresses the problem of assessing, measuring, and further developing a Sustainability Mindset. This mindset is a way of thinking and being that predisposes individuals to act for the good of planet and people. It is a complex construct, developed via the path of an ecological worldview, a systems perspective, and aspects pertaining to emotional and spiritual intelligence. It is aimed at guiding individuals toward living and promoting a more sustainable life, which is crucial for humanity in the 21st century. As educators have been intentionally developing the Sustainability Mindset, it became important to find ways to assess and measure it.The Sustainability Mindset Indicator (SMI) was designed to address this problem. This paper describes the method followed to develop the SMI: a) anchored in theories of psychology and pedagogy, objectives of the instrument and constructs of measurement were defined; b) a questionnaire was designed; and c) 320 personalized feedback reports were created. The questionnaire uses Johnson’s (1992) framework of polarities and stages of human development (Kegan, 1994), whereas the reports follow the directions of Positive Psychology (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2014) and Appreciative Inquiry (Cooperrider, Whitney, & Stavros, 2008). Three validation phases were employed to confirm phrasing, improve comprehension and accurateness, and prepare for pilot studies. The SMI represents an important addition to other scales available in the literature. It focuses on personal development and transformative learning to facilitate mindset change in individuals as well as in educational or coaching settings, and can be used to tailor interventions and assess the impacts thereof
Unmasking the ‘New Normal’ and the ‘Vernacular of the Veracious’ during a Pandemic
This paper argues that the deployment of a figurative language like the phrase “new normal” and many other verbal formulations during a pandemic is a form of power and control by political leaders. This deployment is calculated and calculating as it is meant to condition the minds of the masses that depend on the ruling political class for clarity, guidance, and some form of redemption. These “weaponized” words are presented as expressions of the veracious—essentially a vernacular of power—by persons of authority for a semblance of credibility. There are at least two versions of the veracious that are at play in the communities of infected people: (a) the official sense of what is true and (b) the hidden, unacknowledged “state of affairs” that is known only by the ruling power. The unevenness of communication during the pandemic gives the state full control of the calculated and calculating message, leaving the recipients of the official message reduced to helpless consumers. In these Covidized days of our lives, there is nothing normal in the “new normal.” It is an abnormality. Likewise, the “vernacular of the veracious” is plain propaganda for the wrong reason and needs to be turned into a “new paradigm.
