    Ayon sa kasaysayan, sinasalamin ng magagarang gusali ang adhikain ng isang pamahalaang magmukhang progresibo ang bansa. Ang edifice complex ay isang sakit kung saan nahuhumaling ang isang rehimen na magpatayo ng mga nagsisilakihan at magagarbong gusali na sisimbulo sa pambansang kaunlaran. Noong dekada 1970, sa ilalim ng Rehimeng Marcos, ginamit nila ang kanilang kapangyarihan upang makapagpatayo ng mga gusaling ito para sa kanilang propaganda. Layunin ng papel na itong ungkatin kung paano ginamit ng Rehimeng Marcos ang retorika ng pamilya upang maisulong ang pagpapatupad ng kanilang adhikaing mapaniwala ang taumbayan na ang kanilang mga gawain ay para sa ikabubuti ng bansa. Gamit ang architectonic framework ni Preziosi at ang konsepto ng spatial triad ni Lefebvre, uungkatin ko ang usapin kung paano ginamit ng rehimen ang retorika ng pamilyang Pilipino upang paniwalain na tinatahak nila ang pambansang kaunlaran, ngunit ito ay para lamang sa kakaunting mayayaman at nasa kapangyarihan. Sa huli, naipatayo ang mga gusaling ito upang ilahad at patuloy na paigtingin ang pambansang imahinasyon na ang Pilipinas ay iisang pamilya sa ilalim ng diktaduryang Marcos

    Normalizing the Population: The Biopolitics of the “New Normal”

    While the whole world is trying to get its bearings in the face of the radical changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, two prevailing attitudes or approaches have emerged: (1) a yearning for a return to pre-COVID-19 normalcy typified by what I call the “typhoon-shelter approach” and (2) recognizing the irreversibility of the current condition and seeking to establish a “new normal.” The biopolitical analysis employed in this paper reveals unintended consequences that slip through the mesh of traditional forms of critique centered on capital, ideology, or class conflict. Specifically, the “new normal” project prevents the free movement of peoples while ensuring the continuous flow of data through what Luciano Floridi calls the “infosphere.” This politics instills a xenophobia in which the other is construed as a disease while migrating the population to the realm of virtual reality

    Shoemaking in a Central Philippine City: A Disappearing Tradition?

    Shoemaking in Carcar City, Cebu is an integral part of the locals’ identity as it has been dubbed as the shoemaking capital of Cebu province and the southern Philippines for decades. More than a source of livelihood, it is a tradition that has been passed down for generations. This paper describes the current situation of the shoemaking industry in Carcar. Particularly, it looks into the shoemakers’ narratives and the locals’ stories or opinions about the business and why it is becoming less popular as a means of livelihood. Through these, the paper explores the factors that have led to the decline of the industry and whether knowledge and skills in shoemaking are still being passed on to the younger generation. Qualitative research methods were employed namely, participant observation and semi-structured interviews with a total of thirteen key informants. Findings showed that the changes in the country’s trading policies, favoring trade liberalization, have caused the decline of the local shoe industry as it has paved the way for the unabated entries of imported shoes. Many micro, cottage, or small-scale manufacturing businesses have closed, and only a few independent players are left to compete in the domestic market. The economic changes in the community have led to changes in some socio-cultural practices, changes that are unfavorable for the local shoe industry. With the younger generation showing little interest in learning the craft of shoemaking, this tradition and its socio-cultural practices are on the brink of extinction; thus, the need for interventions and support to revitalize and strengthen the local shoe industry

    Localizing Shakespeare as Folk Performance: Romeo and Juliet, Sintang Dalisay, and the Igal of the Sama Bajau in Southern Philippines

    Based on Romeo and Juliet and a 1901 awit adaptation of Shakespeare’s play, the theater production Sintang Dalisay deploys, as its movement motif, the igal, a dance tradition of the Sama Bajau of the southern Philippines. The use of the motif influences other elements in the production, specifically, the music, the decision to set the play in a Muslim community, the set and costume designs, and the change of the characters’ names into more local appellations. The localized production adopts a collaborative intercultural approach to theater-making, with Muslim and Christian artists working together to teach the dance to performers, help reconfigure the dance for the contemporary stage, and align that reconfiguration with community practice. This paper reviews the production, assesses its reception on etic and emic levels, and contextualizes the project in terms of Muslim–Christian relations in the Philippines. It finds that the task of localizing Shakespeare as folk performance must contend, onstage, with issues of cultural and political representation and, most importantly, offstage, with ethical issues that underlie collaborative intercultural theater. The offstage component makes the production a vehicle to advance a vision of mutual solidarity between Muslims and Christians
