Effect of Superovulation on Piglet Production
Sixty gilts with average body weight of 107.80 + 5.10 kg were used in an experiment to study the use of PMSG and hCG as superovulation agent to increase piglet production. In this experiment 60 gilts were assigned into a completely randomized design with 4 treatments of superovulation with dose level 0, 600, 1200 and 1800 IU/gilt. Injections were conducted 3 days before estrus. During gestation, gilts were placed in single pigpen, and maintained to term. The parameters were birth weight, preweaning growth and mortality. The results showed that superovulation dose levels of 600 and 1200 IU/gilt increased the piglet birth weight, litter size, preweaning growth and piglet production at 90 days. It is concluded that superovulation with dose levels of 600 to 1200 IU can improve productivity. (Animal Production 8(1): 8-15 (2006)Â Key Words : Â Â Superovulation, gilts, piglet productio
The Effect of Feeding Local and Imported Fish Meal on Daily Weight Gain, Sexual Performance, and Semen Production of Kacang Buck
This research was aimed to compare quality of local fish meal and imported ones, mainly in term of their effects on daily weight gain, feed efficiency, sexual performance, and semen production of Kacang goat bucks. Fifteen bucks were allotted to Randomized Block Design with three treatments and 5 replications. Treatment A was concentrate containing 14.10% soy bean meal and 0.90% urea, treatment B and C were concentrate containing 15% of local and imported fish meal, respectively. Each buck was put in individual cage, fed on elephant grass ad libitum and the concentrate of 1.50% body weight. Variables measured were daily weight gain, feed efficiency, sexual performance, and semen production. Semen was collected twice a week for 8 weeks. The results showed that feeding concentrate either containing local fish meal (treatment B) or imported fish meal (treatment C) gave no significantly different effect on daily weight gain, feed efficiency, sexual performance, and semen production. However both treatments gave better effect on the variables than those feeding concentrate containing soy bean meal and urea (treatment A). Based on these results, it could be concluded that quality of local fish meal was not significantly different from imported ones. Thus, it can be used to argue the perception of fish meal consumers that quality of local fish meal is lower than imported ones. Determination of α-Amylase Enzyme Activity and Blood Glucose Level in Local Duck
A α-amylase is included in hydrolase’s enzyme (E.C. 3.2.1.3), which catalyzed the breaking down of α-1,3-glycosidic bound on amylase chain and produced glucose as end product. In mammalian and poultry, α-amylase enzyme has a function as starch breaking down or changed glycogen to glucose. It was used as energy resource in the body. A α-amylase enzyme is protein that resulted in expression from one or several genes, so that has various characteristics among individual. To study the existence and the characteristic of α-amylase enzyme, therefore it has been conducted a research about the connection of α-amylase enzyme unit number with glucose content in Tegal, Magelang and Mojosari duck blood (each of them consisted of 28 birds). This research used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with seven replicates for each treatment. The result research showed that either the unit number of α-amylase enzyme activity or glucose content in these local breed of duck has a highly significant different (P<0.01). This result showed that genetic factor (breed of duck) has influenced either enzyme unit number or their catalytic activity on substrate, so the capability to form blood glucose inter breed of duck also different. It was suggested that their enzyme characteristics have strong connection with the sequence of amino acid as α-amylase enzyme protein composer, which was the result of gene expression. From the result, it was concluded that the unit number and catalytic activity of α-amylase enzyme and blood glucose content in the breed of local duck was affected by genetic factor (breed of duck). The Effect Of Feed Restriction And Exercise On Growt Of Merino Sheep
The Rumen Metabolism Product in Male Sheep
Generally, sheep are capable to cosume the forage about 90 percent of their dry matter requirement. In Indonesia, sheep generally accumulated in low land area, so that the requirement to be supply by dried field grass only. An experiment have been conducted at the Experimental Farm, Faculty of Animal Science, General Soedirman University. Twenty seven male sheep were used in a Completely Randomized Blok Design of three replication. The factors tested were : three levels of dried field grass at: 0, 21.25 and 42.50 percent dry matter of ration. The variables measured were: (1) crude fibre digestion coefficient; (2) Rumen metabolism product: volatile fatty acids, espencially acetate (C2), propionate (C3), butyrate (C4), and valerate (C5). The digestion trial was carried out by the Total Collection methods and the production of individual volatile fatty acids were determined by chromatography technique. The analysis of covariance shown, that there was no significantly effects of treatment tested upon the crude fibre digestion coefficient (P>0.005), but there were a highly significant effect ( P<0.001) upon the production of acetate ((C2) and propionate (C3). The relationship of ceude fibre digestion coefficient with all of the rumen metabilism product were shown to be same, in cubic form. Based on the crude fibre digestion coefficient and the production of individual volatile fatty acid, it was found that dried fields grass can be used up to 42.50 percent of ration dry matter for male sheep. Nutritive Value of Fermented Water Hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) Leaf with Aspergillus niger in Tegal Duck
Two steps of experiment were conducted to evaluate the proximate composition and nutritive value of fermented water hyacinth leaf (WHL) with Aspergillus niger in Tegal duck. Twenty two heads of eight-week Tegal ducks with an average body weight of 1202.55 + 111.14 g were used in this experiment. There were two treatments namely: non-fermented (NFWH) and fermented with Aspergillus niger (FWHAN). Each treatment was replicated 10 times. Data gathered were analyzed using t-student test. The proximate composition between NFWH and FWHAN showed an increase in crude protein/CP (11.44 vs 16.09%) and ash (12.76 vs 22.37%) but a decrease in crude fiber/CF (21.51 vs 16.62%) and nitrogen free extract/NFE (53.20 vs 43.59%). The nutritive value of diet for eight-week Tegal ducks showed that fermentation of WHL with Aspergillus niger significantly increased CP digestibility, true metabolizable energy (TME) and nitrogen retention (NR), but not for CF digestibility. It could be concluded that fermentation of WHL with Aspergillus niger increases the nutrient quality and the nutritive value of diet for eight-week Tegal ducks in term of CP digestibility, TME and NR.
