    Evaluation of Carcass Production of PO Cattle Based on Heart Girth Measurement, Body Condition Score and Slaughter Weight

    The objective of study was to evaluate of carcass production of PO beef cattle based on measurement of heart girth, body condition score (BCS), and slaughter weight.  It was conducted in the slaughtering house at Mersi Purwokerto city.  The materials for this study were 60 heads of male PO breed cattle.  Simple random sampling was used for taking samples.  Data was analyzed by using multiple regression equation to determine the effects of heart girth, BCS, and slaughter weight on carcass weight.  The potency of carcass relative growth was assessed with Huxley allometric equation. The result showed that heart girth did not differ significantly (P>0.05), BCS had significant effect (P<0.01) on carcass weight and percentage, and slaughter weight had significant effect (P<0.01) on carcass weight.  Relative growth of carcass weight to slaughter weight had a high potential (b=1.136), otherwise relative growth of carcass proportion to slaughter weight had a less potential (b=0.136).  It could be concluded that (1) carcass weight could be predicted using BCS and slaughter weight parameters, and (2) PO beef cattle slaughtered had a good of relative growth potential for the carcass.     Effect of Glycerol Levels on the Motility and Fertility of Kampung Chicken Spermatozoa Frozen in Liquid Nitrogen

    The use of various levels of glycerol as a cryoprotective agent for freezing kampung chicken semen was examined with respect to intravaginal insemination.  There was a significant (P<0.05) effect of various levels of glycerol (4, 8, 12 and 16 %) on motile spermatozoa, but there was no significant effect on fertility.  It was concluded that the use of glycerol for preservation of kampung chicken semen in liquid nitrogen gave satisfactory cryopreservative results on    motility of thawed kampung chicken spermatozoa, but failed to produce fertile eggs.     Reproductive Performance Of Kacang And Peranakan Etawah Goat In Indonesia

    Evaluasi performans reproduksi kambing kacang dan Peranakan Etawah (PE) yang telah beradaptasi dapat memberikan informasi penting untuk mengetahui potensi produksi sebagai sumberdaya lokal. Data reproduksi dikoleksi dari 280 induk PE dan 200 kambing kacang melalui penelitian di lapangan dan monitoring lebih dari 1,5 tahun pada peternak di Jawa Tengah, Indonesia. Kejadian reproduksi, tanggal beranak dan jumlah anak yang diamati dicatat. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan statistik deskriptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rataan litter size antara 1-3 anak per kelahiran untuk seluruh induk dengan rataan untuk kambing kacang dan PE masing-masing adalah 2,06 dan  1,56 anak. Bobot lahir pada kambing kacang dan PE masing-masing adalah 3,8 dan 5,4 kg. Daya hidup sampai penyapihan untuk kambing kacang dan PE masing-masing adalah 97% dan 92%. Selang beranak pada induk kambing minimum 205 hari pada kambing kacang dan maksimum 450 hari pada kambing PE. Indeks reproduksi induk kambing kacang dan PE masing-masing adalah 3,07 dan 1,65 anak/induk/tahun.     The Reproduction Performance of Tegal Duck Based on Hematology Status

    The experiment was conducted to study the physiological indicator of Tegal duck based on the hematological parameters and its relation to reproduction performances.  The research materials were 20 heads of male and 100 heads of female Tegal ducks. Parameters measured were erytrocyte, leucocyte, differential leucocyte, hemoglobin, hematocrit, protein total, albumin and globulin, and reproduction performances (semen volume and egg production).  Method of the research was experimental with Completely Randomized Design,  and data were analysed using analysis of variance and correlation.  The result of the experiment showed that hematological parameters of Tegal duck that had high production were high significantly (P<0,05) different than the others, except on albumin value.  It was concluded that reprodution performances of Tegal duck was highly affected by its hematologys status.     Effects of Adding Adenosine Triphosphate to Semen Diluter on Quality of Spermatozoa of Fat-Tailed Sheep

    The research aimed to investigate the effects of adding different levels of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) to semen diluter on quality of sperms of fat-tailed sheep. Treatments consisted of 5, 10 and 15 mg of ATP addition into semen diluter (Egg Yolk Sodium Citric). Results showed that treatments have no significant effects on spermatozoa motility, significant effects on spermatozoa viability, and high significant effects on spermatozoa mortality.  On average, sperm motility for control was 79.16 ± 3.99%; ATP 5 mg = 84.13 ± 5.36%; ATP 10 mg = 85.16 ±  4.54%; and ATP 15 mg = 85.33 ± 3.79 %; sperm viability for control was 25.28 ± 0.49; ATP 5 mg = 26.17 ± 1.53; ATP 10 mg = 27.56 ± 1.48; and ATP 15 mg = 28.34 ± 1.03 (hours); sperm mortality for  control was 12.91 ± 1.05%; ATP 5 mg = 15.59 ± 5.12%; ATP 10 mg = 21.95 ± 2.32%; and ATP 15 mg = 22.25 ± 1.83 %; and quality of sperm for control was 198.216 ± 5.65; ATP 5 mg= 206.312 ± 5.67; ATP 10 mg = 208.164 ± 5.14; and ATP 15 mg = 207.104 ± 5.90.  It can be concluded that addition of ATP into semen diluter was able to increase spermatozoa viability.     Increasing Productivity of Egg Production through Individual Selection on Tegal Ducks (Anas javanicus)

    The purpose of this research was to study the effect of egg production selection characteristic on productivity of Tegal duck.  Materials used were 112 of six month old Tegal ducks consisted of 16 males and 96 females.  Selection for females was applied on 12 duck groups based on egg production phenotipic: parent stock duck (G1) which was offspring of their ancestor (G0) having egg production above average production (not less than 78 eggs in 120 days); while the males were selected based on egg production of their mother, and 4 groups were  use as control.  Production and reproduction data were analysed descriptively compared to initial population using T test.  Egg production was analysed based on Nested Classification to estimate haritability value (h2).  The results indicated that egg production increased from 78.00±19.00 (G0) to 88.12±11.57 (G1).  Heritability estimation on egg production and genetic progress were 0.35 and 5.95 respectively.  On the male, the selection increased body weight and semen quality.  It was concluded that selection of egg production characteristics increased productivity of  Tegal duck.     Correlation of Breeding Values Among Test Day Record at First, Second, and Third Lactations on Milk Production of Dairy Cattle

    The research was conducted at Balai Besar Pembibitan Ternak Unggul Sapi Perah (BBPTU-SP) Baturraden, Purwokerto, Central Java. The aims of this research were to study: (1) Breeding Value among test day record at first, second and third lactations on milk productions of dairy cattle, (2) Correlation of breeding values among test day record at first, second, and third lactations on milk production of dairy cattle. There were 4964 records of milk productions for 9 years since 1997 to 2006 dividing on  2299, 1668, and 997 records at first, second and third lactations, respectively. The observed individuals recorded from 45 bulls and 640 known cows. Fixed Effects were analyzed using General Linier Model. Variance components were predicted using Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML). Breeding value was predicted with Best Linier Unbiased Prediction (BLUP). Heritability was 0.198 at first lactation, 0,270 at second lactation, 0.006 at third lactation, and 0,115 at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd lactations. Breeding Value (BV) between 2.57 and -1,68 at whole lactation. Bull has a highest breeding value on 58-18-N number of whole lactation. Three cows have highest breeding values on number of 914 - 98 (BV = 2,57), 817 - 97 (BV = 1,93), and 882 - 97 (BV = 1,67). Based on Spearman correlation, second lactation was appropriate for selection, because had the highest correlation with whole lactation at 0,67 for whole animal and 0,71 for bull.     Forage Food of Timor Deer (Cervus timorensis) in Manokwari, West Papua

    Traditionally, back yard deer husbandry is well developed in some parts in Papua, though information on deer husbandry has not been provided yet.  Therefore, this study was aimed at highlighting the diet provided to the deer in back yard husbandry model in Manokwari. Survey method was approached by visiting eight deer back yard farmer respondents. Direct observation to the feeding site and semi-structured interview were carried out to learn about the deer management system, and identify the forage diet species consumed and served to the animals.  The results indicated five most common forage species consumed in the study; they were field grass, Imperata (Imperata cylindrica), elephant grass (Penisetum purpureum), king grass (Penisetum purpureopoidhes) and Melinis minutiflora depending on the location of farmed deer.   Drinking water was offered and feed supplement such as various leafs, food and vegetable left over and banana peel was provided by 62.5% of the respondents.  Food supplement was given two times per day (morning, evening) and (afternoon, evening).     Response of Growing Pigs to Diet Physical Form and Allzyme® SSF Supplementation in a Palm Kernel Meal-Based Diet

    Abstract. The increasing cost of conventional feeds calls for the unconventional ones. The effect of Allzyme®SSF and diet physical form on performance, haematological and serum biochemical indices of growing pigs fed with palm kernel meal-based diet was determined. Twenty four growing pigs comprising of twelve male and twelve female weighing 8.95±1.01Kg were assigned into four dietary treatment groups involving dry mash diet, wet mash diet, dry mash diet+ Allzyme®SSF and wet mash diet+ Allzyme®SSF in a completely randomized design. After feeding experiment for six weeks, haematological and serum biochemical parameters were determined. Growth performance was observed on a weekly basis for six consecutive weeks. The results showed that the diet physical form and Allzyme®SSF supplementation in a palm kernel meal-based diet did not significantly affect the haematological and serum biochemical parameters; however weight gain and feed conversion ratio were significantly influenced by the diet physical form and Allzyme®SSF supplementation, thus making dry mash diet + Allzyme®SSF the best dietary treatment. The experiment showed that the diet physical form and Allzyme®SSF supplementation in a palm kernel meal-based diet did not have any negative effect on the growing pigs and growth performance was not hindered; therefore palm kernel meal-based diet in wet or dry mash form with or without Allzyme® SSF supplementation could be fed to growing pigs.     The Semen Quantity and Quality of Two Fowl Strains Supplemented with Vitamin E (α–Tocopherol)

    The study on semen quantity and quality of Kampung and Arab fowl under various levels of vitamin E supplementation was conducted, using 2x4 factorial Completely Randomized Design with 4 replicates.  Analysis of variance followed by Duncan New Multiple Range Test were used to analyze the data.  Levels  of vitamin E given orally were 0 IU (control); 2 IU (t1); 4 IU (t2) and 8 IU (t3) per bird daily.  The results showed that semen volume was not affected by genotype (Kampung: 0.26 ± 0.05 ml Vs.  Arab: 0.22 ± 0.05 ml) while the vitamin E treatments significantly (P<0.05) affected the semen volume i.e. 0.16 ± 0.06 ml (control); 0.27 ± 0.04 ml (t1); 0.28 ± 0.03 ml (t2) and 0.23 ± 0.03 ml (t3).  Semen viscosity was not affected by genotype, but was substantially affected by vitamin E treatments.  The semen pH was not influenced by all treatments given, spermatozoa concentration of Kampung (1.80 ± 0.39 billion/ml) was not significantly different with that of Arab (1.86 ± 0.16 billion/ml).  Vitamin E treatments resulted in different (P<0.05) spermatozoa concentration among control (1.50 ± 0.16 billion/ml), t1 (1.98 ± 0.14 billion/ml), t2 (2.01 ± 0.09 billion/ml) and t3 (1.87 ± 0.18 billion/ml).  No significant different found on semen mass movement between Kampung and Arab, also among vitamin E treatments.  The spermatozoa motility of Kampung and Arab was not statistically different, however vitamin E improved motility significantly (P<0.05); control (2.90 ± 0.59); t1 (3.5 ± 0.16); t2 (3.54 ± 0.25) and t3 (3.44 ± 0.48).  Percentage of dead spermatozoa of Kampung and Arab were 18.24 ± 1.98% and 17.35 ± 2.74%, while vitamin E supplementation results were as follows 18.10 ± 3.03% (control); 18.54 ± 2.01% (t1); 17.72 ± 1.47% (t2) and 16.82 ± 2.87% (t3) no significant different was found.  Percentage of abnormal spermatozoa of Kampung (4.35 ± 0.80%) and Arab (4.64 ± 0.87%) was not different statistically.  Among the vitamin E treatments the results was as follows 4.31 ± 1.40% (control); 4.75 ± 0.69% (t1); 4.94 ± 1.91% (t2) and 3.97 ± 1.14% (t3).  However, significant (P<0.05) interaction effects were found in Kampung males at treatment t2 (4 IU) and t3 (8 IU).
