    Effect of Zeolite Spreading Frequency on Litter Base to Housing Quality of Broiler

    The research was aimed to investigate the application of zeolite spreading frequency in related to control housing quality.  In this study, three aspects of quality were observed namely housing temperature, litter temperature and litter humidity.  The result indicated that spreading frequency was only significant effective in controlling litter humidity.  Treatment of P3 significantly (P<0.05) reduced humidity level of litter base from 42.83% (P0) to 31.18%.     Effects of Different Feeding Frequency of Faba Beans on Rumen Degradation Characteristics of Oaten Hay in the Rumen of Sheep

    Penelitian telah dilaksanakan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh frekeuensi pemberian yang berbeda dari bijian faba terhadap karakteristik degradasi hijauan oat pada rumen ternak domba. Empat ekor ternak domba jantan kastrasi yang telah dilengkapi dengan kanula pada rumen, dengan bobot badan rata-rata 85 ± 5,5 kg, digunakan dalam percobaan ini. Kombinasi (85:15%) antara hijauan oat dan alfalfa digunakan sebagai ransum basal selama studi.  Bijian faba digunakan sebagai pakan suplemen diberikan pada level 0,5% dari bobot hidup.  Penelitian dilaksanakan berdasarkan pola rancangan bujur sangkar latin 4 x 4.  Setiap periode berlangsung selama 20 hari.  Pada masing-masing periode, setiap ternak mendapatkan salah satu dari 4 macam ransum perlakuan, yakni T0 = ransum basal tanpa suplemen, T1= T0 + FB yang diberikan sekali dalam sehari pada pagi hari, T2 = T0 + FB yang pemberiannya dibagi dua dan diberikan pada pagi dan sore hari, dan T3 = T0 + FB yang pemberiannya dibagi atas 8 bagian yang sama dan diberikan setiap tiga jam.  Hasil analisis statistik memperlihatkan bahwa suplementasi dengan bijian faba meningkatkan (P0,05) terhadap pH rumen, dengan rataan 6,36; 6,05; 6,15; dan 6,10 untuk masing-masing perlakuan T0, T1, T2, dan T3.  Begitupula, pemberian suplemen bijian faba tidak berpengaruh nyata (P>0,05) terhadap karakteristik degradasi hijauan oat dalam rumen ternak domba.  Dapat disimpulkan bahwa suplemen bijian faba dapat meningkatkan kadar NH3 dan VFA dalam rumen, tetapi tidak mengubah pH rumen dan karakteristik degradasi rumen dari hijauan oat.     The Effects of Superovulation Prior to Mating and Zinc Supplementation on Milk Yields in Etawah-Grade Does

    Thirty six Etawah-grade does (BW ranged from 20.4 to 44.2 kg and age ranged from 2.5 to 7 years) were used to study the effects of superovulation prior to mating and zinc supplementation on milk yields. The experimental does were assigned into a randomized block design with a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement. The first factor was PMSG (pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin) injection with 2 levels (0 IU/kg BW [nonsuperovulation–NSO] and 15 IU/kg BW [Superovulation–SO]). The second factor was zinc concentration in the diet with 3 levels (40 mg/kg DM [Z-40], 60 mg/kg DM [Z-60], and 80 mg/kg DM [Z-80]). Intravaginal sponge (60 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate) was applied for 14 days to synchronize estrus cycle. Twenty four  hours prior to sponge removal, PMSG was injected  to  stimulate superovulation. After  sponge removal,  5 experimental does  were mixed with 1 buck for natural mating. During  pregnancy  the experimental does were fed and  raised in   individual stables. Udder volume  was measured every other week from weeks 12 to 21 of  pregnancy.  During lactation  (one week to  5 months post partum) kids were separated from the does, and   milk was harvested by hand milking. Milk samples were taken every other week for determination of milk quality. The results  indicated that  superovulation increased udder differential growth  by 80% (822.85 vs 1481.25 cm3/head), milk yield by  32% (567.14 vs 746.52 g/head/day).  Zinc concentration  increased udder differential growth and milk yield. Milk productions for does receiving 40, 60 and 80 mg/kg DM were 565.68, 737.88 and 666.92 g/day, respectively.It was concluded that  superovulation and zinc supplementation  increased milk  yield in Etawah Grade does.     Protein Pattern Analysis of Blood Globulin to Estimation of Genetic Distance among Population of Tegal, Magelang, and Mojosari Duck

    The research to estimation gene frequency on the protein pattern on blood globulin and to estimation genetic distance among population Tegal, Magelang and Mojosari duck. The material were blood samples from 30 heads of duck. Electroforesis technique was used Sodium Dedocyl Sulfate (SDS) polyacrilamide cel elekctroforesis according to Deutcher (1990) method with instrument of polyacrilamide electroforesis  vertical system (Mini-protean II, Bio-Rad) was used for analysis protein of blood globulin. The gene frequency was estimated according to direct account method and tested for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, whereas the genetic distance was estimated by Nei (1972). Result the analysis of electroforesis showed that locus of globulin on the local duck population was controlled by three kind of gene. The gene frequency og GlbA GlbB and GlbC was about 0.05-0.50, migration distance was about 23-60 mm. The genetic distance among Tegal, Magelang and Mojosari duck as 0.010. result of the research was concluded that the protein pattern of blood globulin is usable to estimate both genetic distance and the relationship among population of Tegal, Magelang, and Mojosari duck and also it is estimated that the geographyc location represents a factor that influence the genetic distance.     Factors Analyses of Effecting to Milk Production and Economic Efficiency of Dairy Goat Agribisness In Kaligesing District of Purworejo Region

    A survey in the agribusiness of dairy goat smallholder had been conducted in Kaligesing district of Purworejo region at 13 rd September up to 7th November 2001. The survey studied the factors effecting the milk yield, in how the factors influence economically. Forty eight respondents (dairy goat smallholders) were used in this study and interview method was applied for collecting data. The variables were observed; lactation goat, man power, garage, and concentrate ration. Cobb-Douglass method was applied for analyzing the data. To know the economic efficiency of the agribusiness was approached by the ratio between the Marginal Product Value an input cost. From the data analysis it could be in formatted that the numbers of lactating goat and the numbers of lactating goat and the numbers of concentrate were significant influence on the milk yield, white the man power and the forage were not significant influence. For the numbers of lactating goat and concentrate, economically the efficiency was not yet reached, so the use of the factors were ought to be increased up to an appoint limited. On the other hand the man power and forage was not efficient, so the use of the factors need to be descreased.     The Viability of Local Ram Semen in Tris Buffer With Three Different Egg Yolks

    Egg yolk consisted of lecithin and phospholipids are one of the most commonly used components that will protect spermatozoa against cold shock during cooling and freezing.  The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different hen egg yolk on Tris extender on the freezability of local ram semen. Semen from six sexually matured local rams was collected weekly using artificial vagina. Collected semen was evaluated macroscopically and microscopically and extended  using tris extender consisted of 20% (v/v) regular  egg yolk (TRCEY), native egg yolk (TNCEY), omega-3 hen egg yolk (TOEY) and 6% (v/v) glycerol. Those were packed in 0.25 ml straws, equilibrated at 5oC for 3 hours, frozen and stored in nitrogen tank for 24 hours, and thawed at 37oC for 30 second. The result of the experiment showed that there were no significant differences on the sperm motility and the number of living sperm. Percentage of plasma membrane intact in TOEY (60.3%) was significantly higher compared to TREY (56.9%) and TNEY (55.6%). In conclusion, the addition of omega 3 egg yolk in Tris extender protects plasma membrane better than the regular or native hen egg yolk.     Profile and Role of Woman Involvement in Dry System Pig Farming

    This research was purposed to study the profile and role of woman involvement in dry system pig farming (pig housing with mattress from grass, pig manure, vegetable waste and kitchen waste).  The research was carried out from August to November 2003.  Pig housing areas were located on eight villages of Kertek District in Wonosobo Regency (Central Java).  The method applied was survey with intensive observation.  Sample were randomly selected, involved 180 respondents (15 percent of total pig farmers), while the locations of the sample were selected based on purposive sampling method.  The result showed that respondents were in productive age, with low formal education level. Most of all are Moslems (98%) and they have small family size.  The level of woman involvement in pig farming was high, approximately 85 percent.  They have other income source and they involve in pig farming to help their husbands in generating income.  Experience in the dry system pig farming was quite long (more than 10 years) and skill come from imitating their neighbours otherwise of autodidact.     This research aimed to investigate the most suitable litter materials for broiler farming. Ninety six broiler chicken of Cobb Strain (Anwar Sierad) were used. The Experimental design used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 6 replications. Each treatment unit consisted of 4 chicken. The treatment applied was litter materials, which consisted of rice husk, rice straw, wood shavings and sawdust. Data obtained were analyzed using analysis of variance and continued with Honestly Significant Difference (HSD). Variables observed were body weight at harvest, packed cell volume (PCV) and number of ectoparasite Dermanyssus gallinae. Results showed that body weight at harvest of broiler kept on wood shavings was significantly (P0.05) on PCV. In addition, wood shavings contained significantly (P<0.05) less mite of Dermanyssus gallinae than the other materials. In conclusion, wood shavings was the best litter material for obtaining broiler body weight at harvest, and contained less ectoparasite microorganism, particularly of Dermanyssus gallinae, than the others.     Characteristics of Body Dimension and Male Reproduction on Groups of Sheep Population at Pandeglang and Garut Regencies

    The objective of the research was to characterise body and testes dimension of sheep, the optimal age of scrotal development for selection, and the correlation between body and scrotal measurements as a base for selection. The sheep surveyed were those owned by farmers at Pandeglang and Garut regencies that have been received grants from various government projects (Banpres, Bansos, Bangub, APBD, APBN). Pandeglang area was predominated by local sheep and crosbred between local and Garut sheep. Garut area was predominated by Garut sheep and fighter sheep. Variables observed consisted of body weight, height at withers, scrotal circumference and scrotal length. Data were analysed using one-way analysis of variance continued with Duncan’s multiple range test by mean of SAS software release 6.04. Results showed that fighter sheep have higher body and scrotal dimensions than other breeds. Optimum level of development of scrotal for selection was achieved when the sheep aged one year. Only scrotal circumference and length could be used for assessing sheep fertility, whereas body measurement and scrotal dimensions has low correlation.     Determination of Equilibration Time of Stallion’ Semen Freezing with Extender Skim Milk

    The objectives of this experiment were to determine the best equilibration time with extender skim milk in order to maintain the quality of frozen stallion semen.  The semen was collected from three 5-8 years old stallions using artificial vagina.  The semen characteristics and quality were evaluated macro- and microscopically and extended with skim milk extender (1:1).   The semen was centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 15 minutes.  Supernatant was removed and the pellet was re-extended with skim milk extender with 5% glycerol.  The extended semen then packed in mini straw (0.5 mL), equilibrated at 5oC  for 1 hr (E1), 2 hrs (E2) and 3 hrs (E3), frozen in the liquid nitrogen (N2) vapor for 15 minutes and then stored in liquid N2 containerfor 24 hrs.  The straw than thawed at 37oC for 30 seconds.   The percentages of sperm motility and viability were observed.  The result of this research showed that there were no significant differences  between  equilibration at 1, 2 and 3 hrs on the percentages of  sperm motility with the average of post thawed motility was   23.60 ± 7.10%.   The equilibration time affected the sperm viability (P<0.05) in all stallions, with the percentages of viable sperm between 38.10 % and 46.50%.
