Potential barriers to end-of-life care provision by paramedics in the community
Background: Patients and families are increasingly relying on ambulance services in caring for palliative and end-of-life patients owing to the ageing population, limited advanced care planning and insufficient palliative care services in the community. Methods: The authors reviewed existing literature regarding symptom control, communication and discharge planning, advanced care planning, and education. Findings: Research is limited regarding paramedic involvement in end-of-life care. Many paramedics require end-of-life care training to manage this cohort of patients. Discharges from the acute sector to the community setting require urgent attention, including the implementation of advanced care plans to guide practice. Conclusion: Paramedics require training in end-of-life care to treat patients effectively. Palliative care services require additional resources, skilled health professionals and adequate funding to manage the increasing number of patients dying at home. Improved referral pathways, including those for hospital discharge, are needed between paramedics and community nursing/palliative care teams to ensure best outcomes for patients. Advanced care planning must be addressed by all health professionals

Voices of Memory Exhibition and symposium
The exhibition shows how the theme of memory permeates and is
reflected in artistic practice. Through diverse means of expression, including photography, paintings, installations, film and video, the artists explore ways to deal with the legacy of an often difficult past.
The exhibition brings together Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) academics with artists from different parts of the world who engage with personal or social memories in their projects, as well as with the memory inscribed in the natural environment. Their artistic practice
touches on concepts such as remembering, inheritance, resilience, intersection between present and past, bodily experience or solidarity. The title of the exhibition evokes the different “voices” or perspectives of memory presented through various artworks and also the variety of media that can be used for their expression.
The exhibition brings together Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) academics with artists from different parts of the world: Olga Bubich, Rosell Meseguer, Grace Schwindt, Franziska Windolf, Michal Kindernay, Lisa Glybchenko, Nela Milić, Alexandra Murphy, Liana Psarologaki, Fil Ieropoulos, Cole Robertson, Tom McGorrian, Elisavet Kalpaxi and Anne-Marie Perks.
Voices of Memory project is initiated by the Centre for Enrichment of Culture and Identity, BNU

Vocabulary Development in Young Bilingual Children: Insights from Research and Personal Experience
This thesis explores vocabulary development in young bilingual and monolingual children, namely differences between receptive and productive vocabulary when comparing vocabulary knowledge in a single language, total vocabulary or concept vocabulary. In addition, the effects of language exposure on vocabulary acquisition are examined. Vocabulary acquisition is an important part of language development and can predict a range of language, literacy and academic outcomes. Thus, bilingual children’s vocabulary acquisition has received extensive attention from scholars, as they acquire more than one language from birth or an early age. Consequently, they receive less exposure in each language than their monolingual peers, which can affect their vocabulary development. Some scholars argue that a critical period exists that affects language acquisition after a certain age. As individuals become bilingual at different stages of life, age is a variable that has received extensive attention from scholars, who have categorized bilingualism as either early bilingualism or late bilingualism. This paper focuses on the vocabulary development of young bilingual children and reviews studies on receptive and productive vocabulary development of monolingual and bilingual children, as well as studies on the effects of language exposure on vocabulary acquisition. Young children acquire vocabulary through language exposure and research shows a positive effect of language exposure on vocabulary size, with differences between receptive and productive vocabulary. The results from the studies reviewed in this paper suggest that bilingual children have similar or larger total vocabulary size than their monolingual peers while their single-language vocabulary size varies depending on whether receptive and productive vocabulary is examined. Furthermore, differences in results across studies and my own experience as a mother of multilingual children highlight the need for more longitudinal studies on bilingual children’s vocabulary acquisition, the use of various, yet consistent, measures to examine bilingual children’s vocabulary development and raised awareness among teachers about the multidimensional nature of bilingualism
This thesis examines the impact of storage time on the quality of ungutted Atlantic cod caught by longliners. The study was conducted in collaboration with Brim hf. and was based on a fishing trip with the longline vessel Særif SH 25, where fish were stored with viscera intact for up to 72 hours. The quality of the raw material was assessed through sensory evaluation, total viable bacterial counts (TVC), and measurements of total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N). The results show that quality declined as the storage time with viscera increased, although the deterioration was not linear across all quality parameters. Fish gutted within 0–26 hours showed no signs of spoilage, retained their freshness well, and were considered highly suitable for processing into fresh products. In groups where viscera remained in the fish for 32–46 hours, early signs of spoilage appeared, although bacterial counts and TVB-N values remained within acceptable limits. After 54 hours, significant quality deterioration was observed, with fillets exhibiting off-odors, visible spoilage in the belly flaps, and higher TVB-N values compared to earlier gutted groups. The findings underline that chilling alone is not sufficient to maintain freshness when the storage period of ungutted fish is prolonged. The timing of gutting is therefore critical for both quality and food safety. The study provides valuable insights for fishing companies and seafood processors, supporting the recommendation that gutting should take place within 26 hours of capture to ensure optimal quality
Frivolous cartoons
Silly images have been a part of human history for a long time, from frivolous and exaggerated cave paintings to whimsical and funny animated comics like the Looney Toons or well-thought-out political satire like the modern editorial cartoon. Cartoons have a very particular aesthetic, partly thanks to the use of caricature, i.e., the act of mocking, imitation, and exaggeated physical appearances. They are something I have enjoyed since I was a child, and an art form I have wanted to draw inspiration from in my schoolwork for a while. The aim of this project is to explore the unique aesthetic of cartoons and how it can be translated effectively into the fashion world. It does so through exploring the origin and symbolism of caricature, using political cartoons as a framework for storytelling, specifically how they can be used to translate the aesthetics of cartoons into fashion.
