Í niðurstöðum rannsóknarinnar kemur fram að unnið sé markvisst með læsi á fjölbreyttan hátt í þessum leikskólum..The following thesis is the final assignment for a B.Ed. degree at the faculty of Education at the University of Akureyri. The subject of this thesis is the basic element of literacy and how literacy appears in preschool. These research questions were sought to be answered: “How do heads of departments (in preschool) work with literacy? What knowledge, skills and support are needed to work with literacy?” The thesis is divided into two parts, the first part is a theoretical umræður about literacy in preschools activities and the second part is an interview research where qualitative research methods were applied, it explored how the basic element of literacy is worked in preschools. The first part in this thesis is about different manifestations of literacy in preschools and also scrutinized how children develop literacy. The second part discusses the research and its results. Four interviews were conducted with heads of departments in preschool, all have over three years of work experience. The results of the study show that literacy is being worked on purposefully in a variety of ways in these preschools
Historical undertakings in textile education : teaching material in long-armed cross stitch for the compulsory school
The aim of this project was to develop educational material in long-armed cross stitch, which is also called the old cross stitch, for the Icelandic compulsory school based on projects with historical background that could increase the students interest in long-armed cross stitch. The projects are intended for students at the mid-primary level and lower secondary level of compulsory educabon. The course material can also be useful for craftspeople who have wanted to use the long-armed cross stitch in their work but lack knowledge of the stitch pattern. The projects the students do are based on pattern books preserved from the past. They will be simplified according to the age of the students but with a decisive reference to the past. Students are given a bit of free rein on the topics of the projects, i.e., they have a choice about the patterns, the colours, how the embroidery will be used in the project, and how the finished product will look.
During the development of the course material, academic sources on embroidery were researched and pattern books were examined. Furthermore, artisans who use long-armed cross stitches were contacted, and trials and prototypes of suitable projects were developed.
It is important to maintain this old craft method. It is necessary for the student to understand and know his past and be able to use it in the future. When students have the opportunity to get to know the working methods that have been practiced since time immemorial, they get an insight into life in the past. Students learn new terms and names that we use rarely today and thus add to their vocabulary.
Textiles are part of the Icelandic culture. Craft used to be an integral part of the struggle for life. It is part of our culture. It is based on old craft knowledge, methods, and materials. The craft still serves an important role, both as a factor in product development and in the home industry and has an impact on the image of Icelandic culture
Consumer perception and willingness to pay for packaged asaana: a traditional drink in Ghana
Purpose: In view of the increasing trend in food policies targeting the promotion of consumer interest in locally produced foods and growing developments in willingness-to-pay (WTP) methodologies, the authors investigate consumer preference for packaged traditional drink asaana. Design/methodology/approach: The study used a simple random sample of 336 consumers to draw on perception index and contingent valuation methods to evaluate consumers' perceptions of the attributes of packaged asaana – a traditional maize-based beverage produced in Ghana (also known as Ghana Coca-Cola). A tobit regression model was employed to analyze consumers’ WTP for the product. Findings: Analyzing the factors that influence consumers' WTP for packaged asaana using the tobit regression model, the study established the existence of positive health and nutrition, economic benefits and purchasing decision-making perceptions for asaana. While the results further showed that consumers are willing to pay a premium for well-packaged asaana, demographics such as age, income level, labeling, price of the product and savings were found to exert significant influence on consumers’ WTP for packaged asaana. Salient recommendations for food processors and relevant government agencies and food policy implications are identified. Research limitations/implications: Comprehending WTP provides valuable understanding regarding consumer qualms, actions and WTP for more secure traditional drinks and an examination of how the different factors that influence WTP for local beverages help boost local beverage production and guarantee employment. Practical implications: Analyzing WTP data for traditional drinks reveals important implications for production, marketing and public health policies. Certification systems for traditional beverages may be beneficial, and the findings can be used to create public awareness campaigns about the safety of local drinks. Originality/value: Assessing the WTP among Ghanaian consumers for traditional drinks, specifically asaana, is a ground-breaking study. The contingent evaluation (CE) and tobit regression approaches utilized in this research are strong, and the results obtained can guide decisions related to traditional drink production, marketing and the development of public health policies
Impact of the Nursing and Midwifery Council Future Nurse Standards on children's nursing: A critical discussion
Edge et al explore the current concerns and ongoing debate around the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Future Nurse: Standards of proficiency for registered nurses (2018). This article looks at the impact of the standards on changes to pre-registration children's nursing education, exploring the impact on ensuring students are equipped with the right knowledge and skills to meet children, young people and their families' needs. Central to the discussion is the importance of hearing the voice of children and young people, and families are considered central to the ongoing discussion that is integral in shaping our future nursing workforce
One Man, Two Women and a Dog: Cases of Ageing in the Outdoors
Summary These three auto-ethnographies are the embodied stories of lifelong outdoor enthusiasts. They explore the sensibilities of and entanglements with nature and corporeality of ‘Baby Boomers’. Each narrative reveals the embodied challenges remembered and experienced. We show that getting older and experiencing illness and/or injury does not deny opportunities to enjoy nature-based activities and performance in the outdoors. These narratives provide illumination and snapshots of older outdoor participants’ engagement in/with the outdoors. The first narrative highlights the sensibilities and real affects/effects of illness and how they are managed to retain involvement in outdoor leadership. The next explores the author’s emotions at adapting her embodied activities as she becomes older. The final tale describes how running and walking with an ageing dog opens up comparisons with the author’s own embodied capabilities and enjoyment of the outdoors. Information © CAB International 202
Carbon carrying capacity in primary forests shows potential for mitigation achieving the European Green Deal 2030 target
Carbon accounting in the land sector requires a reference level from which to calculate past losses of carbon and potential for gains using a stock-based target. Carbon carrying capacity represented by the carbon stock in primary forests is an ecologically-based reference level that allows estimation of the mitigation potential derived from protecting and restoring forests to increase their carbon stocks. Here we measured and collated tree inventory data at primary forest sites including from research studies, literature and forest inventories (7982 sites, 288,262 trees, 27 countries) across boreal, temperate, and subtropical Global Ecological Zones within Europe. We calculated total biomass carbon stock per hectare (above- and below-ground, dead biomass) and found it was 1.6 times larger on average than modelled global maps for primary forests and 2.3 times for all forests. Large trees (diameter greater than 60 cm) accounted for 50% of biomass and are important carbon reservoirs. Carbon stock foregone by harvesting of 12–52% demonstrated the mitigation potential. Estimated carbon gain by protecting, restoring and ongoing growth of existing forests equated to 309 megatons carbon dioxide equivalents per year, additional to, and higher than, the current forest sink, and comparable to the Green Deal 2030 target for carbon dioxide removals
Improving the patient experience of transition from hospital to home following stroke: A service evaluation.
Background: Returning home from hospital after a stroke can be a challenging time. There is often a need for patients to be discharged quickly therefore a poor discharge experience for patients and their carers is consistently reported. Individuals can feel anxious and unsupported during this period.
Aim: To conduct a service evaluation in a regional stroke service to explore the experiences of patients being discharged home from the Acute Stroke Unit with support from the Early Supported Discharge Service.
Methods: Specific elements of a previously validated questionnaire were completed by 9 participants. The service evaluation built on previous research and expanded the data by including patients with communication or cognitive difficulties.
Findings: Patients had a positive experience of discharge home from hospital. Most patients received the information they needed and felt involved in discharge decisions. However, one third of patients experienced a delay due to waiting for medication and the need for greater psychological support was identified.
Conclusions: A collaborative approach involving patients and professionals is suggested to bring about improvements to stroke discharge services. Patients should be offered appropriate psychological support and medication should be available as soon as discharge is proposed. Any subsequent study would be improved by recruitment of a larger number of participants; particularly from more diverse ethnic groups who are currently underrepresented, and the option of online or hard copy questionnaire distribution
