    The Work of the Hand and the Mind

    THE WORK OF THE HAND AND THE MIND is in-part a typeface specimen, a visual poetry exercise and a drawing manual. It presents two variations of a display typeface: CIRC, developed using a technical drawing stencil. This exercise in hand-drawn type connects the poetic and typographic through elliptical, fragmented texts. THE WORK OF THE HAND... formed from the artist’s research within the photographic \u27archive\u27 and business records at Eks Skolens Trykkeri (Ex School Printing), a worker-run print co-operative in Copenhagen. Eks Skolens was founded in the late 1960s as an experimental art school and exists in the same building today, operating now as a commercial offset printer – THE WORK OF THE HAND... is printed on their litho press. The book joins constellations of research touching upon: the acceleration and resistance of late 20th century digital technologies, primitive word processors (IBM), the divisions of time and labour and of collective working. The die-cut cover functions as a drawing stencil and readers are invited to put CIRC into use – duplication and dissemination are encouraged. THE WORK OF THE HAND... looks towards artists’ self publishing for ways to connect and circulate ideas in printed form, during a period in which immaterial and digital circulation is the default. CIRC uses Mudejar display type by Jean Larcher as a skeleton for the alphabet, adapted and reworked with a drawing stencil and the addition of glyphs.https://scholarship.rollins.edu/book_arts/1072/thumbnail.jp

    Purification and Activity Analysis of a Highly Active Recombinant Catalase from Psychrophilic Bacterium Psychrobacter cryohaloentis

    To date, the genus Psychrobacter includes 37 recognized bacterial species isolated from different sources ranging from Siberian permafrost (P. cryohalolentis) to seal feces (P. lutiphocae). Due to its diverse ecological niches, several species belonging to the genus have different enzymatic activities with potential applications in bioremediation and the food industry. In this study, a bioprospecting approach was used to perform a in depth analysis of a Psychrobacter-like bacterial strain isolated from goose feces (designated as Psychrobacter unknown). The phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene and homologous sequence studies suggest that the strain may represent a novel species of the Psychrobacter genus. Further genomic analysis on this novel species suggests to a non-canonical central carbon metabolism and potential catalase enzymatic activity. Upon expression and purification of catalse from P. cryohaloentis, a cobalt based catalase assay was optimized. P. cryohaloentis was shown to have an elevated catalase activity exceeding that of commercial bovine liver catalase

    Raising the Abortion Question: An Examination of The Moral Permissibility of Abortion

    The moral permissibility of abortion remains one of the most controversial dilemmas of the twenty-first century, with those in discussion of this subject falling into two camps: those who support the moral permissibility of abortion, and those who consider abortion morally impermissible. Coloquially, these camps have been labeled pro-choice and pro-life. This project deconstructs the various claims made in regard to the moral impermissibility of abortion including arguments of personhood and potentiality, and ultimately establishes that these claims are insufficient in declaring the impermissibility of abortion due to the nature of a woman\u27s bodily integrity. This project also examines the ways in which moral arguments have been used to uphold or dismantle laws and statutes relating to the legality of abortion in the United States

    Many organisms are capable of producing organic compounds as secondary metabolites; these natural products can be quite pharmaceutically and medicinally relevant.1 Typically, the more unique an organism, the more unique its secondary metabolites. Cyanobacteria, an abundant microalgal organism, is capable of producing a myriad of novel natural products.2 The unique photosynthetic and autotrophic properties of cyanobacteria allow for the production of many secondary metabolites, including lipopeptides, amino acids, fatty acids, macrolides, amides, and others.2,3 Staphylococcus aureus is one the most common bacterial infections in the world.4 S. aureus produces a number of metabolites that inhibit host immune responses.4 As a result, S. aureus has become extremely resistant to not only host immune responses, but antibiotics as well.5 A recent discovery of three alkylphenols coined anaephenes A-C derived from cyanobacterium genus Hormoscilla found in Guam has prompted further research into their medicinal relevance.6 The structure of anaephene B is slightly different from its sister compounds with a higher degree of unsaturation due to a terminal alkyne.6 Of the three compounds, anaephene B is noted for its distinct antibacterial functioning towards Staphylococcus aureus; its synthetic replication and manipulation is the focus of this research.

    The decade preceding 2020 has brought into question the political rationality of the average American voter, as it seems many individuals may vote against what is best for themselves. This begs a simple question, are American voters voting in their won rational self-interest, this project looks into a myriad of theories on voter rationality and the processes behind how voters may calculate or come to their voter decisions in an election in order to answer these questions. Then using the 2012 Cooperative Congressional Election Survey creates a method to analyze whether a specific group within the US is voting rationally, that group being the working class

    Utilizing plastic-degrading microbes for plastic degradation

    Our oceans are full of pollution and a large portion of those are plastics. They resist degradation from the elements and have long half-lives. About 300 million metric tons of plastic are dumped into our oceans every year. Many of these include polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), etc. Much of this is not recycled and so there is a massive accumulation of it present in our oceans. Microbes tend to form biofilms on these plastics and break them down. However, the relationship between plastics and the diversity of biofilm communities are being understood as well as how we can use these plastic-degrading microbes as a potential form of bioremediation

    This paper examines the UN Sustainable Development Goal #4, quality education. Over the years, technology has held an amazing part in allowing for education to advance and progress. Technology can give students in all different situations more access to quality education, as they can watch videos from exceptional teachers and professors if they live in an area with a lack of quality educators. One huge issue is the cost and availability of this technology and the aspects that come along with it, such as internet connection, high amounts of electricity, and constant updates and new versions being developed. There exists significant data showing a positive relationship between technology and student achievement. Specifically focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa would allow research to be more compact and in depth in relation to the issue at hand of lacking technological resources to obtain quality education. Sub-Saharan Africa is a region that significantly lacks access to technology and internet usage compared to other places around the world. This issue in Sub-Saharan Africa is necessary to research because they have already made some great advancements, however there is much more to analyze and propose solutions for. Sub-Saharan Africa houses people with very little access to education as well as an extreme lack of technological availability between resources and internet connection. The fact that these two things, education and technology, are both lacking in this area makes sense as they go hand in hand. The improvement of technology and internet availability will increase the amount and quality of education that should be available to these people
