SIMULATION OF COFFEE FRUIT DRYING USING COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS

    Get PDF
Drying is a fundamental step in post-harvest handling of coffee because moisture content at the end of drying affects several important aspects, such as sensory quality, storability, and color. Within this context, the aim of this study is to determine water distribution within the natural coffee fruit during and at the end of the drying process. For that purpose, simulations were made through finite elements using computational fluid dynamics. Experimental data on moisture content of coffee fruitin the “cherry” stage were collected during drying, which was carried out at a temperature of 40°C and relative humidity of 25% to 0.18 decimal(dry basis – d.b.)to compare the results of the experiment with the results of the simulations. Ten mathematical models of the drying process were developed for the collected data. The two-term exponential model best fit the data. The results of the simulations in computational fluid dynamics were compared to the results from experimental drying, and a satisfactory fit was obtained. The effective diffusivity coefficient (Deff) was developed for the model, obtaining the value of 2.87 x 10‑11 m2 s-1. At the end of drying, the model exhibited 57.1% of the projection area of the coffee fruit with moisture content below 0.18 decimal (d.b.). Thus, the model can be used for other applications

A coffee plant producing large fruit, seeds, and leaves in relation to conventional coffee plants, possibly generated by genetic mutation, was named Big Coffee VL. Seeds of this coffee plant were classified by size and used to establish the crop, whose plants were designated as Big Coffee VL. large, Big Coffee VL. medium, and Big Coffee VL. small. The aim of this study was to investigate desiccation tolerance, together with size classification, and evaluate the physiological quality of the seeds of this plant.  Seeds of each type of Big Coffee VL. and of the cultivar Topázio were collected. High moisture seeds and seeds dried to 11% moisture content were evaluated to assess desiccation tolerance. Dried seeds of each Big Coffee VL. progeny and of the Topázio cultivar were classified by size in sieve testing using oblong screens for separation of peaberry seeds, and circular sieves from 22 to 12 for separation of flat seeds. All seeds were subjected to physiological evaluation through the germination test and determination of seedling dry matter. A completely randomized experimental design (CRD) was used; results were subjected to analysis of variance and means compared by the Scott-Knott test. Big Coffee VL. seeds tolerate desiccation to moisture content of 11% wet basis. Seeds of the Topázio cultivar have better physiological performance than seeds of the Big Coffee VL progenies. The bigger the seeds of Big Coffee VL., the better their physiological performance, exhibiting greater seedling dry matter

Coffee, a plant of global economic importance, presents a high degree of micotrophy for nutrients absorption, especially phosphorus, whose sources are scarce, and extremely required in tropical soils. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and coffee crop (Coffea arabica) have been studied for more than three decades, and therefore, analyzing and gathering these studies in a quantitative and qualitative way by means of meta-analysis and critical review of advances and trends is of great relevance. In this review, aspects such as geographic distribution, ecology, effects on plant growth, mineral nutrition, myotrophism, and symbiotic efficiency and its applications were discussed, with special emphasis on the researches carried out in Brazil. By applying the electronic databases Cab Abstracts, Springerlink, Science Direct, Scielo, Scopus, ISI, Lilascs, Woldcat, 73 studies were analyzed, including papers, dissertations and theses. The meta-analysis showed the importance of AMF for growth, plant nutrition and grain yield. Nevertheless, a gap is still evident in the evaluation of the different management strategies adopted in coffee crop and their effects on AMF. The need to extend the research under field conditions was also detected, in order to confer the real contribution of AMF in coffee biocontrol, and their action as biofertilizers and biostimulants.O cafeeiro, planta de importância econômica mundial, apresenta elevado grau de micotrofia para a absorção de nutrientes, em especial de fósforo, cujas fontes são escassas, requeridas em grande quantidade em solos tropicais.

The inadequacy of the spray volume applied to the target can result in low efficiency and environmental contamination. The objective was to evaluate the influence of canopy characteristics in the distribution of syrup in coffee (Coffea arabica L.). The treatments were applied in a C. cv. “plot Red-144 Catuaí” with average growing volume of 12501 m³ ha-1. The treatments were arranged in sub-scheme of split plots, being three foliar densities (1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 kg m-3 plant-1) constituting the plots, five spray volumes (200; 300; 500, 600 and 800 L ha-1) constituting the subplots and three positions in the coffee canopy (upper Third, middle and lower) constituting the sub-subplots, with four replications. The evaluations were conducted in the months of March, July and December 2015. The variables analyzed were: spray deposition drops density (DD), volume median diameter (VMD) of the droplets and relative amplitude (SPAN) drops spectrum. Density 1.0 kg m-3 plant-1 provided higher spray deposition at densities of 1.5 and 2.0 kg m-3 plant-1 in top positions, middle and lower. In the middle position the leaf density 2.0 kg m-3plant-1 provided DD drops 52 and 44% lower than the 1.0 to 1.5 kg m-3 plant-1, respectively. The average VMD was 184 m and the SPAN 1,3. We conclude that the increase in leaf density provides significant reduction in spray distribution within the canopy of the coffee plants.

The search for new genotypes with broad stability and adaptability, allied to good agronomic traits has been the main focus of coffee breeding programs in Brazil. With this work, we aimed at selecting C. arabica progenies, related to phenotypic adaptability and stability, to identify the genotypes with best behavior concerning environmental changes. The trial was installed in January of 2007, in the Experimental Fields belonging to EPAMIG, in the municipalities of Machado and São Sebastião do Paraíso, both in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Analyzes of stability and adaptability were done using the methods of Annicchiarico (1992), Ecovalência (WICKE, 1965) and AMMI (ZOBEL; WRIGHT; GAUCH, 1988). The combinations between years and locations were considered as environment for these analyzes. Progeny productivity was evaluated in bags per hectare from 2009 to 2015. In the harvests of 2013, 2014 and 2015, we evaluated agronomic traits related to yield: income determination, yield and sieve analysis. The experimental design used was in randomized blocks, with four replicates and plots constituted of 10 plants. Progenies 107-47-02 Cova 1 and H 105-01-39 Cova 1 presented better behavior concerning environmental variations, allowing the use for generation advancement in the coffee breeding program. Among the sources of nitrogen (N) used in agriculture urea is the most widely used fertilizer in Brazil. However, this source presents problems with the application on the soil surface due to N losses by NH3 volatilisation, resulting from the action of the enzyme urease. This study aimed to determine the losses of nitrogen (N) by Ammonia volatilisation and yield of Conilon coffee plants fertilized with protected ureas. The experiment was installed in Nova Venécia – Espírito Santo state, Brazil, in commercial coffee farming Conilon ‘Vitória INCAPER 8142’ with five sources of nitrogen fertilizers: Common Urea-45% N (UC45), Urea-45% N + NBPT (U45+NBPT), Urea-44.6% N + 0.15% Cu + 0.4 % B (U44.6+Cu+B); Urea-37% N + 17% de S (U37+S), and Ammonium Nitrate-34% N (AN34). The experimental design was randomized blocks with five treatments and six replicates. Ammonia collectors were installed in each plot immediately after fertilizer application. Ureas protected by NBPT inhibitor and the Cu + B micronutrients have lower volatilisation losses in relation to unprotected urea. The coating of urea with sulfur does not provide reduced losses of N by volatilisation. The coffee yield is not affected by the use of protected ureas with NBPT, Cu + B and S under the conditions studied.

The arrangement of branches and leaves overlap in coffee plants hinder the penetration of sprayed mixture. Therefore, to determine the volume of appropriate syrup, it is important to check the condition of the crop leafiness before application. The objective of this study was to evaluate the deposition of spraying of pesticides in coffee plantations applied on different vegetative volumes. The treatments were arranged following split plot in each growing volume (5,000; 7,500; 10,000 and 17,500 m3 ha-1). And five volumes of syrup portions (150, 300, 450, 600 and 750 L ha-1) and the subplots three positions in the coffee canopy (upper, middle and lower) with four replicates. In the four volumes vegetative studied no significant interaction (p > 0.05) between the applied volume and the different vegetative volumes. However, the vegetative volume of 5000.0 and 17500.0 m3 h-1 depositions was increased with increasing flow, which can be assigned the foliar density. There was no statistical difference (p> 0.05) between the means of deposition in different thirds (heights) in the coffee plants canopy in vegetative volumes 5000.0 m3 ha-1, 10000.0 m3 ha-1 and 17500.0 m3 h-1. However, the volume of 7500.0 m3 ha-1 showed higher deposition in the middle third from the bottom third. The deposition is higher as it increases the volume of applied syrup. In plants with reduced leaf density, there is an increase in the deposition. The deposition is largest in the middle third relative to the lower third.

Due to the importance of coffee to the economy of Brazil and the increase of areas even in zone with water deficits during the year, it is necessary to study the factors involved in its production, especially for mechanized and selective harvesting. At this stage coffee farmers find it difficult to determine the appropriate time to start. This research was carried out to evaluating the spatial variation of force detachment of the coffee fruits (green and cherry) under center pivot through geostatistical methods, semivariogram analysis and kriging interpolation, to improve management for harvest mechanical and selective coffee. The test was carried out at Farm Sao Joao Grande, in Presidente Olegario/MG, in a pivot 50.0 ha. The cultivar used was the “Catuai Vermelho IAC 144”, planted in a circular way in December 2000, spaced 4.0 x 0.5 m. The sampling grid was irregular with 100 points georeferenced where each point corresponds to 4 plants. The determination of force detachment was conducted using a digital dynamometer at each sampling point. Within the maturation stages, green fruits presented detachment force greater than the cherry. The semivariogram and kriging allowed to characterize the variability of force detachment between the studied fruits. The kriging maps make it possible to farmers the choice the best place and the right time to start harvest mechanized and selective coffee and consequently, improved final product quality and profits.

The adjustment of the spray volume according to the volume of vegetation has exhibited a way to make the most efficient pesticide applications. However, for the adoption of this method for the coffee, the determination of the volume index is still needed. Thus, the aim was to determine the volumetric rate of spraying for coffee (Coffea arabica ). The treatments were arranged in blocks following factorial (5 x 5), five spray volumes (200, 300, 500, 600 and 800 L ha-1) and five vegetative volume (TRV) with four replicates. We conducted the evaluation of leaf density prior to the application of treatments in three development stages (filling, maturation and post-harvest fruit). We analyzed the spray deposition (SD), density of the droplets (DD), the volumetric median diameter (VMD) of the droplets and relative amplitude (SPAN) of droplet spectrum. The applied spray volumes were converted to volumetric index (VI). There was no interaction between TRV and water volume (p> 0.05) for the variables SD and DD answers. In the evaluation performed during the maturation stage, leaf density was 29% higher at the time of post-harvest and the maximum SD obtained was 0.74 cm 2 uL. The VMD medium obtained was 217 m and the span 1,1. The adjustment of the curve DD according VI allowed to estimate a reduction of up to 47% of the spray volume applied. It was concluded that the VI set according to the changes in leaf density reduces the spray volume applied to coffee plantations.O ajuste do volume de calda de acordo como o volume de vegetação tem-se mostrado uma forma de tornar as aplicações de agrotóxicos mais eficientes.
