The Molecular Pathophysiology Of Late Onset Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's Disease is a progressive degenerative neurological disease that is characterized by the insidious loss of memory, with the degree of cognitive impairment worsening over progressive decades. It has distinct neuropathological findings that define the disease, including, amyloid (Aβ) plaques, neuritic plaques, and neurofibrillary tangles composed of filamentous tau proteins. The accumulation and deposition of Aβ peptide in the brain has been long been suspected to be a primary cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Aβ plaques provide the nexus for the formation of neuritic plaques. Microglia interacts with the neuritic plaques, releasing cytokines and reactive species that may be responsible for dysconformation of tau, leading to neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). Tau pathology, NFTs, and neuronal death are likely the cause of cognitive deterioration in AD. The molecular pathophysiology of AD demonstrates a complex interplay between production and clearance, stimulation and overstimulation. The result is a disease whose cure needs to take multiple different forms, including targeting Aβ accumulation or clearance, immune modulation, tau interaction accumulation.Chemistry and Physic
How Our Relationships With Ourselves Impact Our Relationships With Others
Out of the many theories as to why and how humans choose their long-term mates, two different models are explored in the present study. Evolutionary models explore the mating strategies used by the two sexes, focusing on the resources each sex can provide to their mate and any subsequent offspring to increase the probability of sexual reproduction in said offspring. Alternatively, cognitive models explore the reasons behind a human’s thought processes and potential emotions that contribute to mate choice. Evolutionary models cannot explain all human mating, especially those who cannot reproduce heterosexually. Specifically, the LGBTQ+ community have been historically overlooked regarding these theories. The present study investigated whether human mate preference is most accurately described using a evolutionary versus a cognitive model. It was hypothesized that the mating preference for those who identify as being part of the LGBTQ+ community will be best explained by a cognitive model, while the mating preference of heterosexual participants will be best explained by an evolutionary model. Participants (N=97) were asked to rate certain traits, first for themselves and then for a potential future partner. Results showed that a cognitive model could explain mate preference for both LGBTQ+ and heterosexual individuals [linear regression: df = 1, F = 983.528, p < .0001, R2 = .912] Someone who rated a characteristic in themselves highly would rate that characteristic important in a partner highly as well. Those who recreate this study should try a random sampling method, and further, explore how people’s expression of their sexuality impacts their long-term mate preferencePsycholog
Understanding The Rise Of Right Wing Populism In The United States
The United States, like many countries in the West today, are experiencing a wave of populism. Right wing populism, more specifically, has grabbed a hold of the United States through the rise and continued popularity of Donald Trump. Though there has been much discussion on this topic in the public sphere of discussion, I believe it pertinent that leftist critiques of subjects fascistic in manner are thoroughly discussed and leftist positions shown and normalized. This research paper will provide explanations for the rise of right wing populism as well as the methods which right wing political actors use to retain and excite their followers. This paper draws on many sources from written texts, news articles, academic journals, as well as direct quotes from videos from speeches. Using these sources I purpose what I believe are the most likely reasons that right wing populism was able to rise and sustain itself in the United States. Right wing populism has grown rapidly and has sustained its numbers because of the (1)crumbling infrastructure and livability of the United States, (2)the political, economic, and social influence of affluent right wing actors, and (3) the intentional political and social tactics employed by right wing actors such as manufacturing a culture war built on outage, successfully “othering” marginalized groups, and controlling the political dialogue through the media.Political Scienc
People Behind The Parks: The Buffalo Soldiers
The Buffalo soldiers were initially formed to help the U.S. congress rebuild the country after the Civil War. The Buffalo soldiers were tasked with fighting the “Indian Wars” on the western front. Amongst their jobs, they were among the first park rangers in our national parks. Their impact on the development of the west cannot be understated.Sport and Movement Scienc

The Effect Of Music Therapy Programs On Inmates' Anxiety, Depression, And Self-Esteem
Music therapy is becoming a more commonly used rehabilitative technique. However, the use of music therapy in correctional settings is a relatively new concept. Because of this, the effects of music therapy programs on inmates' mental health have not been widely studied. In my Senior Honors Thesis project, I conducted a literature review comparing ten studies on the impact of music therapy in correctional facilities on inmates' anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. I found that music therapy does have the ability to reduce inmates' anxiety and depression and increase their self-esteem, however, there are significant limitations that must be taken into consideration. It is crucial to conduct further research on the matter to fully understand the impact that music therapy may have on inmates' mental health.Criminal Justic
Georadar Analysis For Geomorphic Evidence Of Prehistoric Breaches At Nahant Tombolo, Massachusetts, USA
Paraglacial coasts utilize their barrier systems as a defense mechanism for the mainland from the open ocean. Large storms, such as nor’easters and hurricanes, occasionally breach barriers, altering back barrier environments. Therefore, understanding both the nature and periodicity of such events is pivotal in maintaining coastline sustainability. In this study we investigated the Nahant, MA tombolo which serves as a barrier seaward of the Saugus River mouth. Nahant tombolo is a sand dominated barrier, spanning 2km long and 150m wide with a tidal range of 2.7m. Our goal was to observe the geophysical stratigraphy in order to identify potential storm driven breach channels, and to interpret them in the terms of the evolution of the tombolo. A GSSI Ground Penetrating RADAR (GPR) with a 350 MHz hyperstacking antenna was used to investigate the subsurface, and Radan was used for data analysis and processing. Subsurface profiles were generated along 14 continuous beach segments located on a paved path seaward of the done crest. Reflectors were compared to previous studies of subsurface RADAR facies. GPR records logged only three inlet features which were concentrated in a 300 m sector of the 2km tombolo. Inlet features include a basin fill, and two channel fill patterns including complex and accretionary. Prehistoric channels range from 3 to 6m in width and 5 to 6m in depth. Our data indicates that the Nahant tombolo has experienced at least three breaching events since its formation, possibly 3 to 5 thousand years ago. Such events are constrained to a specific stretch of the tombolo, and are infrequent in the geologic record.Geological Science
Trauma-Informed Care In Pediatric And Adolescent Occupational Therapy: Why, When And How?
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) impact an average of 61% of individuals in the United States today (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2021). Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) is a healthcare framework that acknowledges the extensive prevalence of ACES and aims to negate negative implications of ACES on health and well-being. Use of TIC within occupational therapy practice is boasted by research evidence and supported by the American Occupational Therapy Association; however, the implementation of such practices is still emerging. The purpose of this survey research is to examine how TIC is currently being implemented within pediatric and adolescent occupational therapy practice surrounding behavioral health, and whether any barriers to implementation exist. Occupational therapy practitioners across the United States will be surveyed on their current familiarity and use of TIC approaches in order to support identification of the current state of use of TIC in pediatric and adolescent occupational therapy practice.Occupational Therap
Young Children's Social Play Skills Post Pandemic
Mitigation efforts from the COVID-19 pandemic led to children having decreased peer interactions and increased social isolation. There is limited data on the effects social isolation has had on children’s social and play skill development during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed study aims at determining caregivers perceptions of their 36-66 month old child social play skills. For the proposed study, participants will consist of caregivers of young children 36-66 months old. Participants will complete a researcher designed survey containing statements from a functional, highly researched, social emotional and behavioral tool. It is anticipated that the results of this future study will identify gaps in pediatric practice knowledge regarding the impact social isolation has on children and their social play skills and contribute to the understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic as a novel context for the development of social skills.Occupational Therap
