Individual Treatment Plan: Thirty Day Check in and Discharge of Cardiac Rehab Patients
This undergraduate internship was to show the importance of participating in a cardiac rehabilitation program after heart surgery and the importance of living a heart healthy life. The cardiac rehabilitation program at Anna Jaques Hospital (MA) includes an initial, holistic assessment and patient goal setting followed by scheduled re-assessments and a physician’s approved discharge. The intern’s project demonstrated their ability to conduct scheduled re-assessments and discharges of select patients. Facilitated by the student intern, the patients demonstrated growth in the following areas upon their discharge: exercise workloads, frequency of exercise, healthy nutrition choices, reduced stress levels. Patient two was not able to reach their ITP discharge nutritional goal
Living With Cardiovascular Disease: The Connection Between Mental Health And Quality Of Life
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. Depression and anxiety have been identified as common factors occurring with advanced heart disease. An unhealthy lifestyle, such as poor dietary habits or improper coping mechanisms is correlated with the onset of anxiety and depression. Patients with cardiovascular disease that are faced with various stressors as well as depression and anxiety are at risk for poor prognosis of their disease and an overall decreased quality of life. A systematic review was conducted using the CINAHL PLUS database to determine what mental health factors affect the outcome for individuals with cardiovascular disease. The results of this systematic review of seven academic articles outlined five themes that influence the quality of life for individuals with cardiovascular disease. The themes are (a) life satisfaction; (b) socioeconomic status and emotional state; (c) anxiety and fear; (d) stress and distress; and (e) depressive disorders. These results help to identify specific interventions that health care providers should implement when caring for patients with cardiovascular disease. Healthcare professionals should continuously monitor the mental status of their patients with cardiovascular disease, in order to treat their patients. By doing so this has the potential to reduce the progression of heart disease and improve their overall quality of life.Nursin
Utilize Exercise And Heat Therapy To Improve Blood Pressure
Nearly half of U.S. adults suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease. Previous research has shown that exercise is an essential lifestyle intervention to improve cardiovascular health and heat therapy, in forms of hot baths or saunas, may provide numerous cardiovascular health benefits. The purpose of this research was to investigate how the combination of exercise and heat therapy impacted ambulatory blood pressure, compared with heat therapy or exercise alone. The study consisted of three trials in a randomized, counterbalanced order in which each subject partook in all three treatments: exercise alone, heat alone, and the combination being exercise followed with heat therapy. Each exercise trial consisted of treadmill walking for 30 minutes at 60% effort. Each heat therapy trial consisted of 45 minutes in a hot (42C) leg bath. The combination session consisted of the exercise trial followed by a heat therapy trial. Following each session, subjects ambulatory blood pressure and heart rate variability was taken overnight to assess the outcomes that the interventions had on the subjects. Exercise alone had no change in systolic pressure with the average night blood pressure across all subjects was 117 mmHg and the post-trial blood pressure average was 118 mmHg. Exercise alone did lower diastolic blood pressure by 3 mmHg from 67 mmHg to 64 mmHg. Heat alone lowered systolic blood pressure from 117mmHg to 113 mmHg showing a 4mmHg difference. Heat alone also lowered diastolic blood pressure by 4mmHg from 67mmHg to 63mmHg. It was found that the combination of exercise and heat therapy had no change in systolic blood pressure, but the largest impact was on diastolic blood pressure lowering it by 8mmHg.Sport and Movement Scienc
Sapphic Conceptions Of The Muse
From Dante to Gertrude Stein, some of the most prominent artists have found inspiration in another. This thesis explores what it is to be a muse and the role compulsory heterosexuality has in the conception of the passive muse in text as well as narrative cinema. Utilizing Audre Lorde's biomythography Zami a New Spelling of my Name and the film Portrait of Lady on Fire, I explore how these artists conceive of their muses. The difference between the passive muse conception and the various conceptions of these artists is necessary. Since the parameters of the passive muse conception do not account for women as content creators, much less lesbians as content creators, these artists cannot participate it in seeing as the convection doe not encompass them. Moreover, in this text and film, the muses experience the antithetical process to that of the passive muse. Which is to say they go from being an object in many regards to a subject. These works rely heavily on overarching themes of solidarity and the artists’ conception of their muses as extensions of themselves.Englis
The Correct Response To 'Hey Boss Babe!' Is 'No': An Exploration Of The Recruiting Techniques Of Multilevel Marketing
While many people have heard the term “multilevel marketing”, most may not know what the term means and are not aware that the business model is controversial. Multilevel marketing, also known as MLM, sometimes referred to as network marketing or relationship marketing, is a version of direct selling where products are sold and bought through various channels of independent distributors. Many do not want to discuss the messy, unethical, and illegal business practices that may go on in the MLM community. With tactics such as undisclosed earnings and empty promises of effortless riches, MLM corporations enlist a variety of people who are looking for an easy and quick way to make money on the side, such as college students and mothers. While there is some research on the legal and moral issues of MLM — and that of MLM in relation to gender — there is little scholarly research using personal experiences to connect gender to the recruitment practices of MLM businesses. Not only do those at risk of being targeted by MLM deserve to know what warning signs to look for in a company, but victims of this system must have their voices and stories heard. Using surveying as a methodology, this research explores the cautionary signs and unethical recruitment practices of MLM corporations, with a specific emphasis on gender. This paper proves the hypothesis that MLM distributors and recruiters disproportionately target women, with 89% of those approached and 96% of participants in MLM identifying as female.Business Administratio
"Global Migration and Refugees" COIL Teaching Resource (POL 306 COIL Project Questions)
Collaboration question prompt created by Vanessa Ruget (Politics, Policy, and International Relations) for use in “Global Migration and Refugees," a Fall 2021 undergraduate Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) course at Salem State University. The SSU course collaborated with a course taught at International Alatoo University in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. There were 16 students in the SSU course and around 25 students in the partner course. Digital tools used in collaborative work included Zoom and WhatsApp. The prompt provides a list of questions for SSU students to ask their student collaborators at International Alatoo University about their general interests, their thoughts on migration, and their pandemic experiences.Global migration is arguably the most pressing political issue of our time. This course explores the drivers, dimensions, and consequences of global mobility with a focus on current migrant and refugee crises. Why do people move across borders? Where are global migration flows occurring today and how is global climate change accelerating them? What is the difference between migrants and refugees? How is migration affecting politics in both sending and receiving countries? The course also discusses the political, ethical, and moral challenges of migration governance
Suffering In Silence: Variability in Pain Assessment Leads to Inadequate Treatment in Older Adults with Dementia
As the general population continues to age, there is an increase in the number of older adults who have dementia which complicates their ability to process and effectively communicate pain. It is vital that we continue to study and implement standards in pain assessment and treatment so these patients don't suffer in silence
Discovery and Annotation of Microbacterium foliorum phage Juicer and Gordonia rubripertincta phage GiKK.
Salem State was fortunate to be able to run the Phage Discovery semester of SEA-PHAGES in person in the Fall of 2020 under COVID-19 compliant protocols. Two actinobacterial hosts were used; Microbacterium foliorum and Gordonia rubripertincta. Student enriched soil samples yielded a number of phages on both hosts. We were able to amplify and purify two unique phages on each host, and finally send both DNA samples for full genome sequencing at the University of Pittsburgh. Microbacterium phage Juicer is a lytic siphoviridae in cluster EA6 at 41099 base pairs in length and displays typical genome organization. Genome annotation is accomplished by comparison to several close relatives. Gordonia phage GiKK is a lytic siphoviridae in cluster CT at 47537 base pairs and also has typical synteny and close relatives to compare for annotation during the Bioinformatics semester of SEA-PHAGES at Salem State University
Early Integration of Palliative Care Amongst Newly Diagnosed Solid Tumor Oncology Patients
Offering Palliative Care (PC) as a layer in addition to standard medical oncology care [amongst newly diagnosed solid tumor patients] offers great benefit to both the patient and the primary oncologist. The intervention described in this poster helps to ensure an automatic referral process to help educate the patient on the evidence based benefits of PC and reduce common misconceptions of PC. The intervention also allows the opportunity for patients to participate in PC without feeling pressured, along with being able to prioritize what is most meaningful to them, so their providers can align their focus with what is important to the patient
