Massachusetts Residents’ Proximity To Bridges
Get PDFThe state of infrastructure across the United States has received increasing scrutiny over the past decade. Bridges are of considerable concern because of their critical role in supporting our reliance on vehicular transportation for moving people and goods across short and long distances. As the nation’s stock of bridges ages, a systematic program for preservation and investment is needed. Periodic bridge inspections are conducted to identify and prioritize the rehabilitation of bridges in poor condition; these bridges are referred to as structurally deficient. “While structurally deficient bridges are not inherently unsafe, they require substantial investment in the form of replacement or significant rehabilitation, and they present higher risk for future closure or weight restrictions” (2021 Report Card for America's Infrastructure for bridges). The following report offers a deeper understanding of the state of bridges, with a focus on structurally deficient bridges, and their connection to the residents of Massachusetts. It presents an equity analysis to determine if certain populations of people reside closer to bridges with structural deficiency. We consider how minority, low-income, and English-isolated populations fare in comparison to the general population regarding proximity to five different categories of bridges—three structural conditions and two operational conditions.Geography and Sustainabilit

It is designed to develop fine motor skills, social skills, and to unlock artistic potential, which create opportunities to serve their community by engaging themselves in decorating public spaces. Rock painting projects involve teaching and leisure activities. Participants were taught how to hold and use multi-purpose acrylic paints and paint brushes, and were also taught the art of community as part of ensuring their integration. Activities involved going outside to pick rocks and outdoor exploration. Also included was the art of engaging in creativity like mixing paints and drawing. The people involved in the program took part in hiding and finding rocks, and decorating a place in their community with the painted rocks
Language Barriers In US Healthcare: Research In Limited English Proficiency Patient Experience And Health Outcomes
Get PDFThis review covers literature published to the National Library of Medicine from 2010-2021 on the use of Spanish and other non-English languages used in healthcare settings in the United States. Despite the National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Service (CLAS) Standards created by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 2010, it is well-documented that patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) still receive lower quality care. The studies reviewed indicate a lack of standardization in the use of interpretation services and other intervention strategies can increase patient satisfaction, as well as a tendency to underutilize these services when available. Further research must be done on how to promote the use of interpretation services among healthcare providers, how LEP patients navigate topics around mental health, and perspectives of how interpretation services should be used from LEP patients themselves.Healthcare Studie
Exploring The Line Between Representation And Exploitation Of Disabilities In Entertainment Media
Get PDFConsistent with the sociocultural model, consumption of popular media influences a community's thoughts, opinions, feelings, and actions towards groups of people represented. Because of this it is important that historically marginalized groups of people are accurately represented in the entertainment media. However, this is often not the case, especially in regard to the disabled community. To showcase the lack of representation a content analysis of 100 popular media sources with disabled characters was conducted. These sources were then analyzed to see the types of representation in much of the popular media of today, i.e., if characters were played by an actor with a disability or if the disability was a main plot point of the story. Along with the content analysis, ten qualitative interviews with people within the disabled community were conducted to learn about their views of disability representation, exploitation, and existing examples in the media. These interviews asked questions about their view of representation, exploitation, and opinions on the existing examples in the media. This research found that not only is there a lack of representation in the media, but a lack of accurate representation, and this is viewed as problematic by participants in the current study. A Literature Review Of Effects Of Concussions On The Brain And Mental Health Of Athletes
Get PDFThis literature review investigates the effects concussions have on the brain and mental health of athletes. The mechanism of concussions is described as how it affects the brain and some possible cellular effects. Then several studies are highlighted in the major contact sports of football and soccer as well as a comparison of the rate of concussions in men's versus women's sports. It is also pointed out that concussions occur much more often in competition than in practice sessions. The analysis shows there's a strong correlation between concussions and mental issues such as anxiety, depression, behavioral and emotional changes. Functional Neurocognitive Imaging is a new technique used in detecting concussion injuries and can be used to develop a treatment plan for injured individuals. It is also pointed out that concussions can lead to serious disorders like Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), Second Impact Syndrome (SIS) and Parkinson's Disease, but with the correct amount of treatment and recovery time, athletes can go back to living their life normally without the fear of future mental backlash from their initial concussion.Biolog
The Facets Of A Stage Manager: The Intersection Of Relationships And Responsibilities Of A Stage Manager
No full textA stage manager’s job comes with numerous responsibilities that all require a working relationship with so many other positions within production to make everything run smoothly. How do these responsibilities and relationships intersect? This project aims to discover how the responsibilities of a stage manager change according to the relationship to the position they are working with in the present moment. To discover how a stage manager's work may differ between relationships, I will be conducting interviews with different positions and disciplines in a production process, for example, directors, actors, multiple types of designers, props masters and technical directors, to learn what their relationship with a stage manager looks like and what types of responsibilities a stage manager has that pertains to their job. Additionally, a survey will be sent out for theatre professionals across different disciplines to take regarding their experiences in their relationships with stage managers based on their job position, as well as a survey to understand the stage manager’s perspective too. The surveys and interviews will be used to analyze stage manager responsibilities from both their own perspectives and the perspectives of others involved in the theatre making process. The conclusions drawn from the surveys and interviews will aid stage managers in understanding the complexities of their relationships within a production and the ways that their job intersects with those relationships.Theatre and Speech Communicatio
An Investigation Into The Role Of Gamma Oscillations In Alzheimer's Disease And Future Treatment Options
Get PDFAlzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and involves the deterioration of memory and other important cognitive functions. Despite 1 in 3 seniors dying from AD or another form of dementia, there still remains no cure. An accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and tau protein aggregates are what characterize AD. There have been medicines developed that target Aβ and tau protein in order to improve symptoms, but these can neither stop nor delay the progression of AD. Instead, most of the medicines available only aid in symptom control and patient comfort. Researchers have begun to search for new theories of pathogenesis, which may assist in creating new treatments that might cure this disease. One novel area of research in this field is the role of gamma oscillations. It is believed that a disruption in gamma brain waves could be a cause of the formation of Aβ and tau protein aggregation. Although changes in gamma wave activity have been linked to several neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders, treatments that restore gamma oscillations to their normal activity have not been investigated widely.
