Workout Recording Log: Implementing Progressive Overload
No full textThis undergraduate internship project was aimed to implement an effective work out log to record a participant’s progress of a designed workout plan. All workouts and routines were created to accomplish a predetermined fitness goal. Using a workout log, participants were able to track what exercises were completed. The new workout log was created focusing on the principle of Progressive Overload and phases were implemented in which exercises could be modified in either weight, resistance, or repetitions. A gradual increase in these categories overtime allow for progress to be made and helps to avoid participants from reaching a plateau in their workout program. Furthermore, exercises can be modified to increase difficulty and strength, ultimately achieving progress towards the participants’ overall fitness goals

Exploring The Line Between Representation And Exploitation Of Disabilities In Entertainment Media
No full textConsistent with the sociocultural model, consumption of popular media influences a community's thoughts, opinions, feelings, and actions towards groups of people represented. Because of this it is important that historically marginalized groups of people are accurately represented in the entertainment media. However, this is often not the case, especially in regard to the disabled community. To showcase the lack of representation a content analysis of 100 popular media sources with disabled characters was conducted. These sources were then analyzed to see the types of representation in much of the popular media of today, for example if characters were played by an actor with a disability or if the disability was a main plot point of the story. Along with the content analysis, ten qualitative interviews with people within the disabled community were conducted to learn about their views of disability representation, exploitation, and existing examples in the media. These interviews asked questions about people’s view of representation, exploitation, and their opinions on the existing examples in the media. This research found that not only is there a lack of representation, but a lack of accurate representation, and this is viewed as problematic by participants in the current study. Using δ13c And δ15n Stable Isotopes To Identify Suspects By Race/Ethnicity
No full textIdentification of trace evidence from a suspect or victim is instrumental to accurately linking a suspect to a crime. Hair is a common type of trace evidence but is largely class evidence in that color and texture are not individualizing characteristics. However, because no two people have the same diet, and because the δ13C and δ14N stable isotopic composition of hair and fingernails are diet-dependent, the determination of δ13C and δ14N in hair has the potential to play a pivotal role in individualizing hair samples. δ13C is influenced by the amount and type of C3 and C4 plants in a diet, whereas δ14N is influenced by the trophic level of organisms consumed. This study investigates the ability to distinguish hair samples via their isotopic composition, and any possible influence of ethnicity on isotopic composition. An Investigation Into The Role Of Gamma Oscillations In Alzheimer's Disease And Future Treatment Options
No full textAlzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and involves the deterioration of memory and other important cognitive functions. Despite 1 in 3 seniors dying from AD or another form of dementia, there still remains no cure.1 An accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and tau protein aggregates are what characterize AD. There have been medicines developed that target Aβ and tau protein in order to improve symptoms, but these can neither stop nor delay the progression of AD. Instead, most of the medicines available only aid in symptom control and patient comfort. Researchers have begun to search for new theories of pathogenesis, which may assist in creating new treatments that might cure this disease. One novel area of research in this field is the role of gamma oscillations. It is believed that a disruption in gamma brain waves could be a cause of the formation of Aβ and tau protein aggregation. Although changes in gamma wave activity have been linked to several neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders, treatments that restore gamma oscillations to their normal activity have not been investigated widely. The goal of this research is to investigate the current knowledge on AD pathogenesis and treatments, with special emphasis on the impact of gamma oscillations and the exploration of treatments that target restoration of gamma waves.Chemistry and Physic
Patient-Physician Communication; The Importance Of Effective Communication For Surgical Procedures
No full textA physician’s ability to effectively communicate information to their patient is critical for a successful patient-physician relationship. Patients who understand their physician are prone to acknowledge their health condition, understand their treatment plan, adjust their behavior, and follow recommendations. For the following research study, I reviewed current literature on how physicians communicate with young patients about surgical procedures. I recruited undergraduate students at Salem State University to participate in a brief anonymous survey about their experiences with open or laparoscopic appendectomies. Results yielded that 3 out of 30 participants had a laparoscopic appendectomy; 2 of those 3 participants reported having struggled with obtaining satisfactory information about the procedure.Healthcare Studie
Creating A Community Of Tolerance And Acceptance In Middle School
No full textMiddle school is a time where students start to figure out who they are and how they want to present themselves to the world. They begin to learn that being different can set them apart and can sometimes lead to intolerance and bullying from their peers. In navigating these changes, 11-14 year olds often experience social-emotional distress. For this project I will implement a monthly bulletin board series with corresponding homeroom activities to highlight and embrace students’ differences. The project will focus on topics such as bullying prevention, diversity, self-esteem, and kindness in an effort to shift mindsets and promote a community of understanding and acceptance at a small suburban middle school. Students will be surveyed at the beginning and end of the year to measure the changing levels of acceptance among peers to determine the program’s effectiveness and the impact on overall school climate.School of Educatio
Integrative Review: Certification In Nursing Education
No full textNursing, being the foundation of healthcare, need competent nursing educators to prepare the future workforce. Certification demonstrates that a nurse has surmounted a specialized body of knowledge. The National League for Nursing (NLN) offers certification as an academic nurse educator (CNE), academic clinical nurse educator (CNEcl), and novice academic nurse educator (CNEn). The NLN’s nurse educator certification mission is to promote excellence in the advanced specialty role of the nurse educator; clinical and classroom roles. Professional and personal accomplishment, satisfaction, and empowerment are the benefits of certification. Cost, time, academic workloads, lack of promotion, tenure, reward, and certification in another specialty are considered major barriers. Faculty are motivated in pursuing certification if provided ample time, financial reimbursement, and recognition from the institution. Policy development and organizational processes should be expanded to prepare nursing faculty for the CNE since research has shown that certified nursing faculty exhibited improvements in their teaching and their roles were extended. Paying Attention To Mindfulness
No full textStudents often struggle with paying attention in class, especially those with ADHD or who exhibit behaviors that align with ADHD symptoms. Through small group counseling sessions, counselors will look at the impact mindfulness techniques have on students who struggle with attention in the classroom. I will work with these students by teaching them techniques they can use when they feel they are losing their focus and begin to exhibit disruptive behaviors.
