    No full text
Forty adult albino rats were used in this research. They were randomly divided into four groups. The first group served as control group. The other groups were subdivided into three groups according to the concentration of cypermethrin. Three concentrations of cypermethrin were applied (7.5, 15 and 30 mg/kg body weight). All treated doses were given orally every two days and the doses were continued for 30 days. This work included study the changes in the levels of some serum biochemical indices for liver and kidney functions. The findings of this study showed that cypermethrin induced a significant decrease (P<0.05) in blood total protein, albumin and globulin,  and a significant increase (P<0.05) in the concentrations of aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, in addition to urea and creatinine. The current study suggests that cypermethrin has a potential toxicity in rats as a model for mammals. Also, the negative changesthat observed in biochemical values were gradually increased with increasing concentrations of cypermethrin used in this study

Role of Vitamin C Supplementation on Iron Overload and Oxidative Stress in Beta Thalassemia Major Patients in Maysan Province-Iraq

    No full text
Background: Vitamin C is a well-known powerful water soluble antioxidant and very powerful iron absorption enhancer. It was used for a long period in the management of thalassemia major (TM) patients hoping to decrease the oxidative stress initiated by iron overload resulted from hemolysis of erythrocytes and frequent blood transfusions (BT). Iron overload from BTs may be exacerbated in patients due to increased absorption of iron from the diet in response to ineffective erythropoiesis or vitamin C supplementation. Aim: To evaluate the impact of vitamin C supplementation on the iron overload and oxidative stress in beta thalassemia major patients Methods: Fifty five children were investigated in this study. Thirty two of them were patients with TM on frequent BTs and oral chelating drug (deferasirox), they were diagnosed by hemoglobin electrophoresis with a mean age of 9±4.3 y. Patients were attendees of the Blood Disease and Thalassemia center in Maysan Province-Iraq in the period between November 2013 and November 2014. Twenty three apparently healthy children with a mean age of 8±3.2 y were included as a control group. Patients were subjected to vitamin C supplementation (200mg/day) for 2 months. Serum; vitamin C, iron, malondialdehyde (MDA), ferritin and UIBC and complete blood count were determined. Results: There were significant increases of serum iron (P<0.05) and ferritin (P<0.05) levels with insignificant increase of serum MDA levels in samples of patients before supplementation when compared with those of the control groups. However, a significant decrease in serum vitamin C levels (P<0.05) and serum UIBC values (P<0.05) were evident during a similar comparison. The results of second samples, in comparison with the results of first samples referred to a statistically significant increase in serum vitamin C and serum iron (P<0.05), non-significant increase in serum ferritin and MDA and non-significant decrease in UIBC. The complete blood count remained the same in both samples. Conclusion Vitamin C is a powerful enhancer of iron absorption from GIT and releaser from intracellular stores than antioxidant agent. Vitamin C must be given with caution and continuous supervision to TM patients. Recommendation: It is essential to study both smaller and larger doses than 200mg with a longer periods and expanded age groups

    No full text
The study aim to evaluate the effect of 660nm wave length low level laser therapy (LLLT) at different doses on open wound healing in rat model. Twenty five adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five equal groups. Rats were anesthetized by IM injection of ketamine (50mg/kg B.W), xylazine (10mg/kg B.W) mixture. The back of animal was prepared for aseptic surgery, two parallel circular skin incisions 0.5 cm in diameter involving full thickness of the skin were made on both left and right sides of the back of each animal. Four groups were received a close-contact pulsed Gallium-Aluminum Arsenide (GaALAs) laser therapy on the left incision, with energy density of 2, 4, 6 and 8J/cm2 of 660nm wave length, 50mw power output and 146Hz pulsing rat immediately after surgery then repeated the same dose daily for 7 successive days. Results declare that the laser treated group of 2J/cm2 found slightly differences when compared with control group. At 4J/cm2 laser treated group, the healing of wound was better than of control group by presence of narrow scar tissue and completely epithelization. The study found that 6J/cm2 laser treated group was effective in open wounds, which showed faster keratinize layer formation and collagen fiber parallel oriented with the wound surface. However, energy density of 8J/cm2 was more effective for healing process than other groups by presence of more collagen deposition, increase activity of myofibroblast, and presence of clear skin adnexa. In conclusion, the laser wave length 660 nm use in this study was effective enhance the healing process of open skin wound in rats in all the four energy density used; further to the 8J/cm2 is seen the best in stimulation of wound healing

Relationship between Rheumatoid arthritis and anemia of chronic disease of patient in province Diwaniya

    No full text
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common autoimmune inflammatory arthritis in adults. Rheumatoid arthritis is also a chronic destructive inflammatory disease characterized by the accumulation and of an inflammatory infiltrate in the synovial membrane that leads to sinusitis and the destruction of the joint architecture resulting in impaired function. The anemia of chronic disease (ACD) is a result of Body response to inflammation or system disease. ACD, usually a mild to moderate anemia, is the most prevalent anemia after iron deficiency anemia and also the most prevalent anemia in hospitalized patients. This anemia, first described in chronic infections, may be found in subjects with diseases involving acute or chronic immune activation and thus could be seen in a variety of inflammatory conditions, acute or chronic Infections, rheumatologic disorders, autoimmune disorders and cancer. The study includes thirteen (20 female and 10 male)  patient  with RA and (10 male and 20 female ) as the control. In the present study, significantly increased (p < 0.05)  At ferretin , and significant decrease (p < 0.05).   In Hb, iron, transferitin, transferin saturated. These results suggest Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease, primarily located in the synovial joints, Anemia of chronic disease is anemia connected with inflammation or system disease. It is mediated by inflammatory cytokines TNF, IL-1, IL-6 and IFN that engulf iron than iron metabolism dysregulation, decreased RBC production in bone marrow, shortening the RBC lifespan, and decreased erythropoietin secretion.
