    Get PDF
The concept and movement of Interreligious Qurban, initiated by Tuan Guru Batak, a murshid of the Naqshbandiyah Khalidiyah order in Simalungun, North Sumatra, represent a social innovation aimed at fostering interreligious harmony. This movement is realized through the Qurban ritual during Eid al-Adha, involving various community elements, including religious leaders, Muslim and non-Muslim communities, and local government officials. The distribution of qurban meat is carried out indiscriminately, regardless of religious background, reflecting a strong spirit of solidarity and tolerance within the multicultural society, particularly in Nagori Jawa Tongah. This study aims to analyze the thoughts and implementation of the Interreligious Qurban Movement and its impact on social harmony. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research collected data through in-depth interviews and document analysis from various local and national media sources. The findings reveal that this movement not only strengthens social relations but also serves as a model for religious diversity in Simalungun. The success of this initiative is evident in the establishment of the Interreligious Qurban Activity Center at the Sufi House and Civilization of Pondok Pesulukan Serambi Babussalam. These findings suggest that the qurban ritual can function not only as a religious obligation but also as a social instrument for fostering tolerance and social cohesion in a pluralistic society. The concept and movement of Interreligious Qurban, initiated by Tuan Guru Batak, a murshid of the Naqshbandiyah Khalidiyah order in Simalungun, North Sumatra, represent a social innovation aimed at fostering interreligious harmony. This study examines several controversial policies of the New Order government as a manifestation of educational politics in the realm of higher education. This study uses a historical method consisting of five steps by Kuntowijoyo, namely topic determination, heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The data collection technique uses historical literature studies by utilizing various sources such as journals, books, theses, and articles that are credible and relevant. The results of the study show that several controversial policies of the New Order in the realm of higher education are the implementation of NKK/BKK to sterilize campuses from political activities that have the potential to endanger the stability of security and government power. More specifically, the government prohibits and complicates licensing for student activities to hold demonstrations, seminars, discussions, and other activities aimed at criticizing the government. In addition, lecturers and students are also prohibited from using left-wing learning resources that are contrary to Pancasila. Other controversial policies include the centralized election of campus leaders, the prohibition of long hair and the prohibition of wearing the hijab. Higher education level becomes one of the strategic spaces that cannot escape from the tight supervision, control, political and ideological interests of the rulers. As a result, the campus democracy is increasingly dimming due to the limited space for movement and expression of students, especially in non-academic matters. This study examines several controversial policies of the New Order government as a manifestation of educational politics in the realm of higher education. Data were gathered from dissertation documents and classroom observations. It was found that the majority of the spelling problems result from pronunciation during dialogue. The findings suggest that the spelling errors were as a result of omission, addition, substitution of letters, incorrect word spacing, dialects, and punctuation. The study will greatly contribute to post-graduate studies by providing guidance on dissertations and ensuring that meaning is achieved

LANGUAGE FUNCTIONS IN THE BASARANG RITUAL: A CULTURAL-LINGUISTIC STUDY OF MINANGKABAU ORAL TRADITION

    Get PDF
Language serves as a vital medium in oral traditions—not only for communication but also as a vehicle for transmitting values and reinforcing collective identity. The Basarang ritual in Nagari Kasang, Minangkabau, is a traditional ceremony performed to commemorate the birth of kembar sumbang (twins of opposite sex) and to restore social and cultural harmony within the community. Despite its cultural richness, linguistic studies on Basarang remain scarce compared to other Minangkabau traditions. This research investigates the functions of language in the Basarang ritual through Roman Jakobson’s (1960) model of language functions, employing a qualitative framework and an ethnography of communication approach (Spradley, 1997; Duranti, 1997). Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation of ritual utterances, mamang (chants), pantun (poetic verses), and prayers. The analysis categorizes linguistic expressions according to Jakobson’s six language functions—referential, emotive, conative, phatic, metalingual, and poetic—allowing systematic interpretation of their realization in ritual discourse. Findings reveal that language in Basarang functions not merely as a communicative tool but as a symbolic medium that legitimizes customary law, nurtures social solidarity, and transmits moral and cultural values. This study extends Jakobson’s framework by embedding it within the ethnolinguistic context of Minangkabau ritual discourse, offering contributions to both linguistic theory and cultural preservation

INTERPERSONAL METAFUNCTION IN INDONESIA’S INDEPENDENCE DAY SLOGANS (2015–2025)

    Get PDF
This study analyzes Indonesia’s Independence Day slogans from 2015 to 2025 through Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics, focusing on Interpersonal Metafunction. As annual commemorative texts, these slogans function not only as symbolic expressions of independence but also as strategic discourses that negotiate power, construct solidarity, and reinforce national identity. Employing qualitative discourse analysis, the research investigates mood, modality, pronoun usage, evaluative lexis, and the interplay of explicit and implicit meanings. The findings indicate that declarative and imperative moods position citizens within relationships of inclusivity and responsibility, while modality expresses urgency and commitment. Evaluative vocabulary conveys optimism and resilience, with explicit meanings emphasizing productivity, recovery, and progress, and implicit meanings connecting contemporary challenges to historical struggles and the long-term vision of Indonesia Emas 2045. Overall, Independence Day slogans function as condensed ideological texts that bridge past sacrifices with future aspirations, illustrating the discursive power of language in shaping nationalism and providing practical insights for developing effective national slogans
