Infestation and herbicide sensitivity in selected regions of Germany: Results of a weed resistance monitoring 2019

    Get PDF
The results of a German monitoring are presented. For a representative survey, the level of infestation of different grass weeds at the time of seed maturity was determined in 1121 fields in Germany and a seed sample was collected. Records were taken for blackgrass, silky bentgras, different brome species and Italian ryegrass. The status of the sensitivity against two herbicides of the HRAC group A (Axial 50) and B (Atlantis WG) was assessed in a bioassay (greenhouse). The results demonstrate that the infestation after herbicide treatment in the field is low in most cases and thus there is still good control with the chosen herbicide. It turns out, however, that even with low infestation in the field resistances can be detected, which suggests a strong selection pressure by the product used in the field. Resistance to Axial 50 was observed more frequently than against Atlantis WG

Hyperspectral data collected through a handheld spectroradiometer (400-1010 nm) were tested for assessing the grapevine predawn leaf water potential (ѱpd) measured by a Scholander chamber in two test sites of Douro wine region. The study was implemented in 2017, being a year with very hot and dry summer, conditions prone to severe water shortage. Three grapevine cultivars, \u27Touriga Nacional\u27, \u27Touriga Franca\u27 and \u27Tinta Barroca\u27 were sampled both in rainfed and irrigated vineyards, with a total of 325 plants assessed in four post-flowering dates. A large set of vegetation indices computed with the hyperspectral data and optimized for the ѱpd values, as well as structural variables, were used as predictors in the model. From a total of 631 possible predictors, four variables were selected based on a stepwise forward procedure and the Wald statistics: irrigation treatment, test site, Anthocyanin Reflectance Index Optimized (ARIopt_656,647) and Normalized Ratio Index (NRI711,700). An ordinal logistic regression model was calibrated using 70 % of the dataset randomly selected and the 30 of the remaining observations where used in model validation. The overall model accuracy obtained with the validation dataset was 73.2 %, with the class of ѱpd corresponding to the high-water deficit presenting a positive prediction value of 79.3 %. The accuracy and operability of this predictive model indicates good perspectives for its use in the monitoring of grapevine water status, and to support the irrigation tasks

This study was designed to investigate the influence of grass and film mulching on grape (V. vinifera) fruit quality and root transcriptome. The groundcovers (plastic film and seeds of herba portulacae and E. humifusa Willd) were set or sawn on the ground under wine grape plants (\u27Cabernet Sauvignon\u27). Test plots in the control group were treated with clean tillage. Properties of plant biochemicals under covers and grape berry quality were determined after two years. RNA-seq was analyzed for grape roots under different treatments. E. humifusa Willd cover increased plant total N and P; and film mulching increased plant total P and decreased plant total K. Herba portulacae cover decreased berry tannin and increased anthocyanin, soluble solid and titratable acid; E. humifusa Willd cover increased anthocyanin, soluble solid and titratable acid. Film mulching increased the contents of berry total phenols, soluble solid, and decreased titratable acid significantly in comparison with clean tillage. Root RNA-seq showed that there were 1, 0, and 42 differently expressed genes (DEGs) in Herba portulacae, E. humifusa Willd and film cover, compared with clean tillage, respectively. Film mulching increased the expression of root high-affinity nitrate transporter 2.1 (NRT2.1), NRT2.4 and glutamine synthetase, which associated with \u27Nitrogen metabolism\u27, and decreased the expression of root small class I/II heat shock proteins. Plastic film mulching increased grapple quality properties via activating N metabolism. Film mulching was a more excellent mulching for improving grape quality than grass cover in Ningxia, China

Weed management and weed research are at a turning point. This is the opinion of numerous experts. Herbicides are reaching their limits due to the disappearance of existing active substances and the increase in weed populations that are difficult to control. Regulation based requirements to improve biodiversity are to be imposed and herbicide quantities should be reduced. The paper discusses the causes of the problems and possible solutions. The current herbicide system must be revised and the effects on public goods must be more strongly integrated into control decisions

Minimum tillage is widespread in Germany, which is true for about 40% of arable land. The advantages of ploughless soil cultivation are, for example, benefits for soil life, energy and cost savings as well as erosion control. Disadvantages are problems with snails and mice, often a higher use of pesticides and an increase in weeds. Long-term field trials are indispensable for considering the effects of ploughless soil cultivation. Especially concerning weed flora, effects only start to appear after several years. Since autumn 2007, the Julius Kühn-Institute in Dahnsdorf has been conducting a long-term field trial to investigate the effects of non-inversion tillage. The field is located in the federal state of Brandenburg, in the natural region of Hoher Fläming. An early summer drought is very common in this region. In two different pesticides strategies, inversion and minimum soil tillage was compared. One result is that loose silky-bentgrass (Apera spica-venti) has higher emergence rates in plots with minimum soil tillage. This is true for both pesticide strategies. In the case of dicotyledonous weeds the higher emergence rates occur after some time also depending on the pesticide strategy

Efficacy of herbicides against yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) plants originating from seeds

Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) is a troublesome weed. It reproduces and spreads mainly via tubers, but also viable seeds are produced. The seeds are very small and have little resources stored. The seedlings are very fragile and look like grasses (poaceae). We hypothesized that C. esculentus plants originating from seeds are more susceptible to herbicides than plants originating from tubers. Cyperus esculentus plants grown from seeds in the greenhouse were treated with glyphosate, bentazone, bromoxynil, pelargonic acid and clethodim. Herbicide efficacy was rated and produced tubers were counted. None of the treatments achieved full control. Four weeks after application a growth reduction of 84% was observed in the glyphosate treatment, whereas bentazone reduced growth by 34% compared to the control. In the other treatments, growth reduction was < 15%. In the glyphosate and bentazone treatment, considerably fewer tubers were produced than in the control. Concluding, we could not confirm our hypothesis. Already 6 weeks after germination seedlings were well developed, tolerant to the sprayed herbicides, except for glyphosate and bentazone, and produced tubers. This implies, that already after a short time Cyperus esculentus stands originating from seeds pose the same problems as the ones originating from tubers

Residual active ingredients from the group of chloroacetamides for pre- or very early post-emergence use dominate herbicide usage in winter oilseed rape due to their weed spectrum, crop tolerance, duration of activity and tank mixture compatibility. Dimethachlor, one of four representatives of this group registered for use in winter oilseed rape, has been known in Germany for over 20 years as a component of premix formulations for pure pre-emergence application. With a registered use rate of 1’000 g/ha, dimethachlor as a single formulation is available in Germany since 2019 as Colzor® Uno Flex also for use in early post-emergence applications. Dimethachlor controls many important broad-leaved weeds and some annual grasses in winter oilseed rape. Dimethachlor is characterized by comparatively high water solubility and a rapid degradation in the soil to non-relevant metabolites. In order to protect groundwater, it is recommended to reduce the application rate to 750 g/ha in karst areas with shallow topsoil, on sites close to groundwater and on light, permeable sandy soils. Weaknesses or inconsistencies in the use of less than 1000 g/ha of dimethachlor can be overcome with mixing partners against specific weeds in pre- or post-emergence uses. Colzor® Uno Flex also offers the possibility of a change of active ingredients with a residual component in early weed control in winter oilseed rape. Its use is particularly appropriate where tank mixtures or spray sequences are preferred over complete solutions, e.g. due to buffer restrictions or to extend application timing-flexibility. For complementation of weed control gaps or weaknesses, Colzor® Uno Flex can be mixed with all suitable partners for early weed control in winter oilseed rape

New perspectives on plant biodiversity in Germany

    Get PDF
Importance and protection of biodiversity is common sense in Germany shown by notable media coverage and many publicly funded programs to support certain species up to whole ecosystems. Plants have a huge influence on biodiversity since they represent largely the first layer of the food chain and deserve therefore special attention. In the past great work has been done to capture and share knowledge about plant species through books and paintings (e.g. Ciba-Geigy Weed Tables, etc.). Together with public research institutions, the crop protection industry has a profound knowledge of plant species in agricultural fields. We report here on new options around digital agronomy, especially smartphone applications, and provide a sound overview on what is available and useful, including our new app Proximais® containing phenotypic and ecological information of 320 European weeds. It is intended to provide valuable support to farmers during weed identification and management. In addition to such new practical capabilities, this new technology has a great potential to increase and update our knowledge about plant species further. Enlarging the plant species database beyond classical weeds while enlarging the user base could, for the first time, allow a broad documentation and mapping of plant species on agricultural land in Germany
