The Relationship Between Teacher’s Questions and Children’s Answers ―In Teaching English to Elementary School Lower Graders―
Get PDFThis paper attempts to find out what kinds of teacher questions in English activities elicit more answers from elementary school first and second graders. Two studies were administered in this action research. In both studies, the author herself taught English to different groups of learners using the same English picture story. In Study 1, using recorded learner replies to teacher questions, question types and goals were analyzed by the researcher, and also by external evaluators. Two features that elicited more learner replies were found. In the second study, the researcher focused on those two features: giving more English questions than Japanese questions, and allowing longer wait times after teacher questions. Results indicate that these two features clearly increased the number of English replies from the learners.departmental bulletin pape
