Post-study-abroad Care and Career Support: A Report of a General Education Course "Reflecting on Our Study Abroad" as a Post-study-abroad Education for Study Abroad Returnees in the Spring Semester of the Academic Year 2022
Get PDFThis paper aims to report the reactions of students who joined the new general education course titled “Reflecting on Our Study Abroad” held in the spring semester of 2022. Eight undergraduate students of Showa Women’s University who had experienced their study abroad for a few months within the first seven months of 2022 joined the course. The first author of the paper was the instructor of the course and its content had been developed by the authors. The results show that all of the returnees experienced reentry shock （reverse culture shock） upon coming back to Japan. We also found that all the students shared their study abroad experiences with their peers and felt relieved listening to the other students’ talks. They also realized how to make use of their study abroad experiences for their future working lives, as well as to take action to maximize their experiences. They were especially encouraged and motivated by fellow students. Thus, we conclude that it is meaningful to continue the special course to help study abroad returnees with post-study-abroad care and career support.departmental bulletin pape
Teaching Materials and Methods that Contribute to the Promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics Education ―Reviving "Monozukuri" in Living Environment and Natural Science Studies
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to examine what constitutes effective educational materials and teaching methods in STEAM （Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics） education,. It is the authors’ contention that materials and teaching methods that emphasize hands-on learning are effective in creating authentic learning in Living Environment and Natural Science classes. There are, however, some nation-wide problems with “monozukuri” as it is currently used at schools in Japan, so it is necessary to design a new teaching-learning model for STEAM education. To consider the significance of STEAM education, we conducted a case study in which students made a small electric fan by hand. Results revealed problems such as that curriculum development in this area in Japan is lacking, and that systems for delivering teaching materials to children are underdeveloped. Findings also demonstrated that 1） encouraging an artistic approach and tinkering is essential in STEAM education, 2） children are motivated to use their hands and learn in depth when they are given materials manipulable with some degree of freedom and are taught to use these materials with appropriate teaching methods, and 3） learning through engineering combined with art has the potential can create a beneficial synergy which can trigger learning in science, technology, and mathematics. Results further suggested that if the teacher refrains from pre-emptive intervention and allows children to work by themselves, the teacher, as well as the children, will enjoy the process and be able to learn together.departmental bulletin pape
