No full textNos deprime y alarma de manera creciente, el indiscutible hecho del mal gusto y poca educación de muchos comerciantes del área metropolitana, dedicados consciente o inconscientemente a hacerle daño a la apariencia de nuestras ciudades y especialmente a las principales arterias y sitios de interés de nuestra capital. Nos parece que el único destino de tales mercaderes es producir dinero sin importarles lo que digan nuestros visitantes frecuentes, sobre la estética y dilapidación de nuestras ciudades cuando regresen a sus países... Como las autoridades no dicen anda sobre esto; como permiten tales desmanes; como tienen brigadas de obreros desforestando la ciudad y como un poste feo de luz, tendido eléctrico o telefónico vale más que un árbol... Por eso haremos de Quijotes señalando dichos desmanes que al ciudadano vulgar no interesarán, pero, estamos seguros maltratan la sensibilidad de muchos buenos ciudadanos y al ojo de muchos visitantes que transportan a otros países el mensaje de nuestro Puerto Rico Contemporáneo...

No full textFew would deny La hora de todos y la Fortuna con seso the role of keystone in the entire edifice of Quevedo\u27s satirical and socio-political writings: one receives the distinct impression that virtually all his thematic preoccupations and stylistic characteristics, in fully matured form, have found their way into this work, his last major satirical effort. Appropriately, it is also a very confusing work, full of the contradictions and ambiguities that lie at the very heart of Quevedo. While a small number of critics have dealt with some of its conspicuous disparities, it is my contention that the work\u27s profoundly problematical dimension has only barely been uncovered, let alone explained in coherent fashion. This paper will attempt to come to grips with that dimension through an approach which, though methodologically diverse, employs as a basic theoretical framework the investigations of the relationship between ideology and literature realized by Pierre Macherey and Terry Eagleton. Although its conclusions are obviously subject to debate, I do feel that this type of reading at least begins to open the door to a clearer understanding of the manifest complexities of Quevedo\u27s work and its relationship to seventeenth-century society. Another View of the Tonic Vowels of Ibero-Romance Under Influence of the Yod
No full textThe purpose of this study is to give a parallel comparison of the effects of the yod or palatal element on the tonic vowels of the three Ibero-Romance languages: Castilian, Portuguese and Catalan. The influence of the yod on the tonic vowels of these languages can be found in any of the general historical grammars which treat each language individually. The problem arises, however, that as each language is studied separately, no light is shed on the similarities and differences which exist in the linguistic family as a whole. The manner in which each language resolves a particular linguistic problem, in this case, the tonic vowel under influence of the yod, determines its linguistic personality. The manner in which this treatment agrees or differs from its neighboring languages, i. e., the nature of the resultant phoneme, determines its familial association. No full textCon extraordinaria sorpresa he leído en la prestigiosa revista “URBE” un trabajo del arquitecto y planificador urbano y regional (léase urbanista) Eduardo Montoulieu, titulado “Carta abierta a ciertos urbanistas” en la que sin nombrarme se refiere a mi como uno de los “ciertos” ya que habla de quien dictó un curso de introducción al urbanismo en la Universidad de Puerto Rico y ese fui yo.
