Designing spaces for a desirable common future
Whether revamping an existing place or creating one from scratch, the design of a public space always entails the ambition of enhancing urban life and improving the wellbeing of people. All people. Indeed, if the public nature of a space is to be activated, its improvement must benefit the entire population, ensuring that no group is excluded—or, worse, displaced—in the process. In a time of growing social inequalities, exacerbated by climate change and migration, how can we—designers, policymakers and critics—aim to create more just, inclusive, and liveable cities? How can we collectively foster stronger social connections, build vibrant communities, and cultivate a sense of belonging? The projects featured in this 12th award of the Prize offer insights into these pressing questions, reflecting the current state of practice across Europe and sparking important reflections on the future of urban transformation
Marketing and artificial intelligence
For several year, software publishers specializing in marketing solutions have been promoting the integration of artificial intelligence services into their tools. Using artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT directly is a common approach, but it is also possible to use generative AI integrated into digital marketing tools. These generative AI applications around content are essential, and constitute an area in which marketing and communication professionals can easily begin to use them with reasonable budgets and a prompt return on investment. Advances in audio and video generation also make it possible to produce sounds, music and video sequences that can be used in the context of marketing. Marketing teams are under intense pressure to integrate these generative AIs into their practices and gain in efficiency. By becoming a possible substitute for the search engine, a tool such as ChatGPT could eventually divert traffic and advertising revenue from Google
REMCO ::overview of reuse practices in the construction industry in french speaking Switzerland
REMCO (reuse of construction materials) conducted by HEPIA and HEIG-VD of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES SO) provides an overview of the reuse of construction materials in Western Switzerland over the past five years. It has identified around twenty construction sites where reused materials has been significantly implemented and has analysed in detail five case studies from a multi-criteria perspective of implementation, logistics, cost and environmental impact. The outcome of REMCO shows that reuse is still in its infancy in this area, and that despite its very interesting environmental benefits, it is only being implemented on a very limited scale. It also highlights that if cost may not be the main problem for the development of this practice, warranty issues still need to be addressed, and a common language has yet to be implemented to link offer and demand
Positive and negative sequence control for power converters under weak unbalanced networks
In the application field of AC/DC converters connected to utility networks, the DC-link voltage controller is generally too slow to compensate the second harmonic component caused by the unbalance of the phase voltages. Assuming the accurate description of the unbalance in the network voltages, namely by the accurate decomposition in the positive and negative sequence synchronous reference frame, the generated currents are also decoupled into two parts and separately controlled. For the proper cancellation of the oscillation in the power taken from the network, the unbalance in the voltages is taken into account in the calculation of the four current references. Results show that the DC-link voltage show no second harmonic component and is able to operate with weak networks under voltage unbalance
Yield of cyclic vs heat-and-hold induction sintering on the mechanical behaviour of the low-cost Ti-5Fe alloy
The high cost of Ti alloys is hindering their industrial implementation and, therefore, the quest for low-cost Ti alloys entails lowering the intrinsic cost using cheaper alloying elements and developing more efficient manufacturing methods. In this study, the yield of manufacturing the novel low-cost Ti-5Fe alloy via heat-and-hold and cyclic induction sintering around the allotropic α→β phase transformation was compared as the latter is expected to enhance densification. It is demonstrated that induction sintering is extremely efficient due to its characteristic high heating rates and simultaneously permits to obtain homogenous chemical compositions at low homologous sintering temperatures. Cyclic sintering yields faster sintering kinetics, which results in higher densification with respect to heat-and-hold, achieving uniform residual porosity distributions within the microstructure, comparable relative density, and on average smaller and more spherical pores. Consequently, higher strength but not necessarily higher ductility is obtained for the cyclic sintered Ti-5Fe alloy as the failure mode entails crack propagation through irregularly shaped pores
Single-Phase Resonant Circuit Using a Bank of Self-Switched Capacitors
This paper presents a preliminary work on the feeding of an ac dipole using a resonant circuit with a varying resonant frequency. A single-phase LC oscillator containing a variable capacitor is fed by a wideband amplifier or a voltage source inverter. For this purpose, a bank of switched capacitors of different values are connected to the main circuit through bidirectional switches. In order to allow zero-current and zero-voltage switchings, the devices are implemented with close-control driver circuits, allowing self-switching based on local polarity measurements. An innovative controller for maintaining the current in an oscillator and a regressive method for measuring alternating current with a limited number of samples are proposed and validated by experiment
Cryptokit
The CryptoKit research project provides a visual mapping of blockchain technology and Web3 protocols to make them accessible to a wide audience. It includes an open source typeface of more than 200 pictograms of key blockchain terms. When paired with IBM Plex, these icons can be arranged in didactic diagrams thanks to a dedicated tool on this website
Tschicholds bibliotheek uitgepakt
The exhibition features the corpus of bibliographical sources cited by the graphic designer Jan Tschichold in his work Die neue Typographie (The New Typography, 1928). This founding text of modernist graphic design has been at the centre of debates, while the sources cited by its author have often been overlooked.
In Ghent, the exhibition is complemented with a selection of Belgian magazines, such as La Cité (1919–1935) and Het Overzicht (1921–1925) from the collection of the Kunstenbibliotheek, as well as the results of a four-day workshop held by BINGO (Belgian Institute for Graphic Design) with graphic design students from KASK & Conservatorium. Students interpreted the historical material to make it their own as a contemporary and local response to the exhibition
