Evaluation of eccentric and concentric force during vertical jump after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a comparative study
Background Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R) significantly affects lower limb biomechanics,
particularly during dynamic movements like jumping. The countermovement jump (CMJ) is a commonly used test
to evaluate force production and asymmetry in post-ACL-R individuals. This study aimed to compare eccentric and
concentric forces during the CMJ between ACL-R patients and healthy controls.
Methods This retrospective study included 56 ACL-R patients and 47 recreational athletes. All participants performed
CMJs on a dual force plate to measure eccentric mean force (ECC), Concentric mean force (CON), and limb symmetry
index (LSI). A mixed ANOVA was performed to compare ECC LSI and CON LSI between the ACL-R and control groups.
Results CMJ height was significantly lower in the ACL-R group compared to the control group (-25.4%, p<0.001),
with a lower ECC LSI (-7.7%, p<0.001) and CON LSI (-10.0%, p<0.001).
Conclusion Six months after ACL-R, both eccentric and concentric force production remain compromised, with
significant inter-limb asymmetries. These findings highlight the need for targeted rehabilitation strategies to restore
force symmetry and optimize return-to-sport readiness

Tense production in French-speaking participants with Alzheimer’s disease ::what about discourse? contribution of a storytelling-in-sequence task
Background: The production of verbal tenses is impaired in people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), as shown by several studies focusing on time reference and using sentence completion tasks. However, there is currently a limited understanding of how tense is produced in discourse with this disease. Discourse is interesting as it involves building a mental representation of the event to be narrated with its temporal framework and translating this framework into language using tense. A shift from the present perspective to the time of the event is required. This may be particularly difficult for people with AD, who also show an alteration in mental time travel capacity, which is linked to episodic memory, semantic memory and temporality. Objective: This study has two aims: (1) to investigate the influence of the temporal framework on tense production in French-speaking people with AD, and (2) to determine whether abilities in temporality, episodic memory and semantic memory predict tense marking in discourse among this population. Methods: Tense production was assessed using a storytelling-in-sequence task administered to 21 people with biologic ally probable AD (age: 71.95; % female: 57) and a control group. Results: The results showed that people with AD produced more verb forms in the present tense in the non-present conditions than in the control group, especially in the future condition. Temporality and semantic memory predict future tense production in this disease. Conclusions: This study suggests that studying time reference in AD provides information about the ability to mentally travel through time in this population
Gastrocnemius activation deficits and running biomechanics after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: the missing link?
Background: Return to running (RTR) after anterior cruciate ligament
reconstruction (ACL-R) remains challenging due to persistent neuromuscular
deficits. This study examines gastrocnemius activation and running
biomechanics in ACL-R patients.
Methods: Fifteen ACL-R patients and fifteen healthy controls were assessed
using surface electromyography during isometric testing and treadmill running
(10 km.h−1). Spatiotemporal parameters, including ground contact time, flight
time, step width, cadence, stride length, and vertical stiffness, were analyzed.
Results: ACL-R patients exhibited lower gastrocnemius activation during
isometric testing (medial: 48.5% vs. 55.9% MVIC, p = 0.01; lateral: 42.1% vs.
47.5% MVIC, p = 0.03) and during running (medial: 45.2% vs. 53.1% MVIC,
p < 0.01; lateral: 39.7% vs. 44.8% MVIC, p = 0.04). They also demonstrated
altered running biomechanics, including longer ground contact time (0.29 vs.
0.26 s, p = 0.02, d = − 0.5), shorter stride length (1.32 vs. 1.41 m, p = 0.03,
d = 0.9), reduced vertical stiffness (21.8 vs. 25.6 kN.m−1, p = 0.03, d = 0.5), and
slightly increased step width (0.14 vs. 0.13 m, p = 0.05, d = 0.4). A significant
negative correlation was observed between medial gastrocnemius activation
during running and ground contact time (rs = −0.56, p = 0.02, ES = −0.6).
Lateral gastrocnemius activation was positively correlated with stride length
(rs = 0.49, p = 0.03, ES = 0.5), and medial gastrocnemius activation showed a
moderate positive correlation with vertical stiffness (rs = 0.52, p = 0.04,
ES = 0.5). Cadence did not show a statistically significant correlation with
either medial or lateral gastrocnemius activation (rs = 0.36, p = 0.08, ES = 0.4
and rs = 0.45, p = 0.09, ES = 0.4, respectively).
Conclusion: Gastrocnemius dysfunction persists after ACL-R, affecting running
mechanics. These findings suggest that current rehabilitation protocols may
need to incorporate plantar flexor training to optimize running mechanics
post-ACL-R
Geospatially-informed recommendations for automobile purchases ::integrating spatial analysis for enhanced decision-making
This research proposes an integrated recommendation framework to support automobile purchase decisions by aligning consumer preferences with spatial and technical factors. In response to the challenges faced by car buyers, particularly those with limited automotive expertise and overwhelmed by excessive information, the model leverages sentiment analysis from social media and combines it with spatial variables, including dealership density, vehicle availability, circulation restrictions, environmental suitability, and pricing. These factors are then matched with technical specifications to generate personalized and context-aware vehicle suggestions. Using Mexico City as a case study, the empirical analysis reveals that regional differences in infrastructure, regulatory policies, economic conditions, and environmental constraints strongly shape vehicle preferences. The findings show that consumers in areas with stricter vehicle regulations and better service infrastructure tend to prefer vehicles with higher initial costs but lower long-term maintenance demands. While the system is built around the socio-economic and infrastructural peculiarities of Mexico City, it has been designed with modular and configurable components, allowing it to be adapted to international contexts with similar data availability. Nevertheless, the dependence on locally specific variables should be explicitly acknowledged when considering its broader applicability. This raises the question of scalability and transferability, inviting further research into how the framework can be generalized across diverse urban and regulatory environments
Sublethal damage caused by cold plasma on bacillus cereus cells ::impact on cell viability and biofilm-forming capacity
The Bacillus cereus group represents a serious risk in powdered and amylaceous foodstuffs. Cold plasma (the fourth state of matter) is emerging as an alternative effective nonthermal technology for pasteurizing a wide range of matrices in solid, liquid, and powder form. The present study aims to evaluate the mechanisms involved in Bacillus cereus inactivation via cold plasma, focusing on (i) the technology’s ability to generate damage in cells (at the morphological and molecular levels) and (ii) studying the effectiveness of cold plasma in biofilm mitigation through the direct effect and inhibition of the biofilm-forming capacity of sublethally damaged cells post-treatment. Dielectric barrier discharge cold plasma (DBD-CP) technology was used to inactivate B. cereus, B. thuringiensis, and B. mycoides under plasma power settings of 100, 200, and 300 W and treatment times ranging from 1 to 10 min. Inactivation levels were achieved in 2–7 log10 cycles under the studied conditions. Percentages of sublethally damaged cells were observed in a range of 45–98%, specifically at treatment times below 7 min. The sublethally damaged cells showed poration, erosion, and loss of integrity at the superficial level. At the molecular level, proteins and DNA leakage were also observed for B. cereus but were minimal for B. mycoides. Biofilms formed by B. cereus were progressively disintegrated under the DBD-CP treatment. The greater the CP treatment intensity, the greater the tearing of the bacteria’s biofilm network. Additionally, cells sublethally damaged by DBD-CP were evaluated in terms of their biofilm-forming capacity. Significant losses in the damaged cells’ biofilm network density and aggregation capacity were observed when B. cereus was recovered after inactivation at 300 W for 7.5 min, compared with the untreated cells. These results provide new insights into the future of tailored DBD-CP design conditions for both the inactivation and biofilm reduction capacity of B. cereus sensu lato species, demonstrating the effectiveness of cold plasma and the risks associated with sublethal damage generation

Privacy-preserving location-based services by using Intel SGX
We are witnessing a rapid proliferation of location-based services, due to the useful context-aware services they provide their users. However, sharing sensitive location traces with untrusted service-providers has many privacy implications. Although, user-data monetization is the core economic model of such services, offering private services to concerned users will be a beneficial functionality in the coming years. Existing solutions include location perturbation, k-anonymity and cryptographic primitives that trade service accuracy or latency for enhanced user privacy. We introduce a novel approach for privacy preserving location-based services by using the Intel Software Guard eXtensions (SGX). We implement a simple location-based service using SGX and gauge its performance in terms of efficiency and effectiveness, in comparison with its bare-metal implementation. Our evaluation results show that SGX contributes a marginal overhead but also provides near-to-the-perfect results in contrast to spatial cloaking with k-anonymity whose performance deteriorates as the degree of desired privacy increases. We show that hardware-based trusted execution-environments are a promising alternative for offering proactive and de-facto location-privacy in the context of location-based services
