    A detailed analysis of how physiotherapists “give” reassurance for patients’ concerns in back pain consultations

    Reassuring patients with low back pain to reduce their concerns is important for good clinical practice. However, guidelines provide little information on how physiotherapists should best deliver reassurance. This study explores how “reassurance” is enacted by physiotherapists and back pain patients during an initial consultation. The research setting was primary care. Twenty initial physiotherapy consultations were video-recorded and transcribed. The patient–physiotherapist interactions were analyzed using conversation analysis, a qualitative observational method. These data highlighted how some physiotherapists gave reassurance directed by what they considered to be important but not always grounded in patients’ expressed concerns. We also observed examples where physiotherapists developed a better understanding of patients’ concerns, which provided more patient-focused and targeted reassurance with less interactional “trouble” and greater patient affiliation. These findings suggest that physiotherapists should develop a good understanding of patients’ concerns, and take them into consideration, before delivering their reassurance. This will require that physiotherapists be responsive to patients’ concerns and adapt their communication to the individual needs of the patient

    Benchmarking zero-shot foundation time series forecasting models for industrial applications

    Time-series forecasting foundation models recently emerged with zero-shot capabilities, leveraging generalized training on diverse datasets. This study compares zero-shot foundation models to traditional statistical, machine learning, and deep learning methods using industrial and academic multivariate datasets. Results show foundation models, particularly Moirai large, often outperform traditional methods while reducing dataset-specific tuning needs. These findings highlight their industrial potential by allowing for simpler, yet more accurate forecasting

    Shift planning optimization in regional home care services in Switzerland

    This paper presents a solution to optimize the scheduling of carer shifts in home care services in a regional setting in Switzerland. To achieve this, all necessary data is sent to a shift planning algorithm using constraint satisfaction, which is embedded within a module accessed via an API. This algorithm generates optimized daily schedules for each carer based on the received data, considering factors such as carer roles, absences, travel routes, and patient preferences. The generated schedules are then returned to and integrated within the home care software, where they can still be manually adjusted by the planner if needed. First tests show the feasibility of the approach

    Implementation of La(Fe, Co)13−xSix materials in magnetic refrigerators ::practical aspects

    In this paper, we report some practical aspects concerning the application of La(Fe, Co)13−xSix based materials in the magnetic cooling technology. For this purpose, two blocks of La(Fe, Co)13−xSix with different Curie temperature were considered for this study. Before implementing the new refrigerants in the magnetic cooling machine, we have measured directly their magnetocaloric properties in practical conditions around room temperature. The obtained magnetocaloric effect values were corrected taking into account the demagnetization effect. The influence of the demagnetization field on the magnetocaloric performances of La(Fe, Co)13−xSix is analyzed and discussed. A composite material based on La(Fe, Co)13−xSix compounds was tested directly in our recently developed magnetic cooling system and a comparison with the gadolinium was made. Encouraging results were obtained showing the high potential of the studied materials in magnetic cooling application. In addition, the poor corrosion resistance of the intermetallics can compromise the potential of these materials. In this paper, we also present the corrosion tests performed on different samples of La(Fe, Co)13−xSix using several heat transfer fluids

    In this paper, we present a detailed study of the magnetic interaction forces encountered in magnetic cooling machines between magnetocaloric (MC) refrigerants and a magnetic field source. Numerical calculations have been performed using different magnetocaloric materials. The obtained results have been analyzed and compared with experimental measurements. In order to reduce the magnetic forces in reciprocating magnetic cooling systems and as a consequence increase their thermodynamic performances, a special configuration of the MC refrigerants is proposed. Numerical investigations have been carried out to analyze the resulting magnetic force. The obtained results are confirmed by measuring directly the involved forces on our recent developed magnetic refrigerator. The preliminary calculations demonstrate that more than 90% of the energy absorbed by the cooling machine can be saved with the new design, and consequently, a high coefficient of performance can be obtained

    Metaphors of digital transformation

    This chapter explores metaphors used by organizational actors to understand digital transformation and digitalized organizations. Following a “pigeon-holing approach” (Örtenblad 2017), we identify and categorize two sets of metaphors. The first set of metaphors consists of the metaphors of digital transformation: that is, the metaphors that deal with change—the wave metaphor and the digit metaphor. These metaphors help us better understand different dimensions of digital transformation as a technological and organizational change process. The second set consists of the metaphors of digitalized organizations: that is, the metaphors that deal with transformed organizations. Based on Morgan’s (1986) metaphors, the authors identify three root metaphors, namely the machine metaphor, brain metaphor, and instrument of domination metaphor. They argue that using several metaphors as categories helps us identify differences between various phenomena associated with digital transformation and digitalized organizations, and offer an overview of organizational actors’ understandings of these phenomena

    Acquisition of musical skills and abilities in older adults ::results of 12 months of music training

    Background : Older adults can acquire new skills across different domains. Practicing a musical instrument has been identified as a promising activity for improving cognition, promoting well-being, and inducing brain plasticity in older individuals. However, the mechanisms of these changes are still poorly understood. This study aims to assess musical skill acquisition in musically naïve older adults over one year of practice, focusing on individual factors influencing this process and the relations between musical skills. Methods : One hundred fifty-six healthy older adults (age = 69.5 years ± 3.2) from Hannover and Geneva with no prior musical training participated in weekly piano practice (PP) or ‘music culture’ (MC) sessions over a one-year period. Baseline assessments included the Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire (CRIq) and Cognitive Telephone Screening Instrument (CogTel). Musical abilities were measured using piano performance ratings (PP group), music quizzes (MC group), and aptitude tests such as the Beat Alignment Test (BAT), Melodic Discrimination Test (MDT) and Midi Scale Analysis (MSA) at baseline and six-, twelve and 18-month timepoints. The interrelationship between musical abilities was investigated through correlational analyses, and changes impacted through individual characteristics were modeled using Bayesian statistics. Results : The PP group demonstrated moderate improvements in piano articulation and dynamics, while the MC group achieved higher scores in the music quiz. Modest improvements in MDT and MSA were observed in both groups, with the PP group showing greater progress is MSA. Higher global cognitive functioning and musical sophistication was associated with greater performance in MDT for both groups. We did not identify any links between individual characteristics, like age, CogTel, CRIq, and musical sophistication, and improvement in musical aptitude tests. Changes in different musical aptitude test scores were not correlated, and neither the development of piano skills nor the music quiz correlated with initial performances on the musical aptitude tests. Conclusion : Musically naïve older adults can acquire diverse musical abilities, which progress independently, suggesting a broad spectrum of musical abilities rather than a single general musical aptitude. Future research should also explore genetic and psychosocial factors influencing musical development

    Assessing the profitability of investment in chinese liquors ::a hedonic analysis of baijiu prices

    This paper examines the price determinants of Baijiu using data collected from five auction platforms and compares the performance of a physical Baijiu investment with financial markets. We find that each additional year of a Baijiu's age leads to a 5.82% price increase, and a vintage effect is also significant. Additionally, bottle volume influences Baijiu's prices differently across product lines and producers. The choice of auction platform also affects pricing, while the presence of the original case is a price driver for the mainline Baijiu and Moutai. The analysis suggests that speculative factors may primarily drive the investment fervour
