    LIONHEART ::a layer-based mapping framework for heterogeneous systems with analog in-memory computing tiles

    When arranged in a crossbar configuration, resistive memory devices can be used to execute Matrix-Vector Multiplications (MVMs), the most dominant operation of many Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, in constant time complexity. Nonetheless, when performing computations in the analog domain, novel challenges are introduced in terms of arithmetic precision and stochasticity, due to non-ideal circuit and device behaviour. Moreover, these non-idealities have a temporal dimension, resulting in a degrading application accuracy over time. Facing these challenges, we propose a novel framework, named LionHeart, to obtain hybrid analog-digital mappings to execute Deep Learning (DL) inference workloads using heterogeneous accelerators. The accuracy-constrained mappings derived by LionHeart showcase, across different Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and one transformer-based network, high accuracy and potential for speedup. The results of the full system simulations highlight runtime reductions and energy efficiency gains that exceed 6×, with a user-defined accuracy threshold for a fully digital floating point implementation

    Effectiveness of neuromuscular training in preventing lower limb soccer injuries: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Abstract: Background: Soccer is associated with a high risk of injuries, mainly affecting the lower limbs, leading to significant consequences for player performance and career longevity. Neuromuscular training (NMT) has been proposed as an effective preventive strategy, but its impact varies across different populations and implementation strategies. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive search of PubMed, MEDLINE, and SPORTDiscus identified randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, and systematic reviews examining the effects of NMT on lower limb injury prevention in soccer players. Study quality was assessed using the Downs and Black tool, and injury incidence rate ratios were analyzed. Results: Eleven studies, encompassing over 10,000 soccer players, were included. NMT interventions, particularly FIFA 11+, significantly reduced injury rates compared to standard warm-ups. Higher adherence and coach education enhanced program effectiveness. Female players benefited more, particularly in ACL injury prevention. No significant differences were observed between shorter (10 min) and standard (20 min) NMT protocols. Conclusions: NMT effectively reduces lower limb injuries in soccer, with adherence and proper coaching being key determinants of success. Future research should optimize program design and long-term adherence strategies to maximize benefits across all player demographics

    Simulation des Zusammenhangs von Stratifikation und Turbinenbetrieb eines Mittelland-Stausees mit der Qualität des nachfolgenden Fliessgewässers

    Mittellandspeicherseen erfahren eine andere Dynamik bezüglich des Stoff- und Energiehaushalts als alpine Speicher. Um die Interaktion von hydrodynamischen und thermischen Prozessen im Speicher, und das ans nachfolgende Gewässer abgegebene Wasser, zu untersuchen, wurden am Beispiel des Schiffenensees in Freiburg entsprechende explorative numerische Simulationen durchgeführt. Vorgängig wurde ein ausgedehntes Messystem im See installiert, um die Simulation mit realistischen Randbedingungen bezüglich des vertikalen Temperatur- und Sauerstoffprofils zu speisen. Die validierten Simulationen haben gezeigt, dass das Modell die ans untenliegende Fliessgewässer abgegebene Qualität des Wasers gut abzubilden vermag. Der grosse Abfluss durch die Hauptgruppen vermochte dabei im Sommer die ausgeprägte Stratifikation des Sees kaum zu stören. Weiter konnte die Wirkung einer Belüftungseinrichtung auf der Restwasserturbine nachgewiesen werden, welche in Phasen der Anoxie turbiniertes Wasser zuverlässig mit Sauerstoff versorgt hat.Les retenues situées sur le plateau Suisse connaissent une dynamique différente de celle des retenues alpines en ce qui concerne l’évolution de la qualité et de la température de l’eau. Afin d’étudier l’interaction entre les processus hydrodynamiques et thermiques dans le réservoir et l’eau rejetée dans le cours d’eau aval, des simulations numériques exploratoires ont été effectuées sur l’exemple du lac de Schiffenen dans le canton de Fribourg. Au préalable, un système de mesure étendu a été installé dans le lac afin d’alimenter la simulation avec des conditions limites réalistes concernant le profil vertical de température et d’oxygène. Les simulations validées ont montré que le modèle est capable de bien représenter la qualité de l’eau transmise au cours d’eau en aval. L’écoulement important à travers les groupes principaux n’a guère perturbé la stratification marquée du lac en été. En outre, l’effet d’un dispositif d’aération sur la turbine à débit résiduel a pu être démontré, lequel a permis d’oxygéner de manière fiable l’eau turbinée pendant les phases d’anoxie

    Mobile spaces of control and moral geographies ::places of internal bordering, immorality and crime in Sweden

    This paper – based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in 2017 with the Swedish border police force in charge of detecting and deporting irregularised migrants – analyses bordered urban space. It contributes to discussions about moral geographies that are produced through bordering work of border police officers, which sometimes blurs the distinction between external and internal border controls, based on an analysis of three spaces: the port as an “in-between” space of bordering; workplace inspections; and searches of private homes and other types of accommodation, conducted with the aim of detecting morally censured sex work. As I find, officers function as gatekeepers of the nation and its moral values in relation to space and thus map the area of their jurisdiction according to potentially “illicit” conduct of noncitizens. This, in turn, legitimises their gendered, classed and racialised inspection practices even as these practices entrench the perceived “otherness” of such spaces and manifest moral judgements

    State-crafted dominant fictions ::how bad documents, gut feelings, and selective intelligence shape border control in Europe

    This article details how knowledge is produced, circulated, and acted upon by migration control officials working in different sites of the European border regime. Drawing on research into the politics of knowledge in border and migration control, along with studies of street-level bureaucracy, we trace the knowledge mobilised to craft state fictions that form the basis of border bureaucrats' decision-making. Empirically, the article builds on research carried out in three different projects that all explore how borders are enacted across Europe and beyond. It details how knowledge is produced at the rear and frontline of border and migration control, and traces how ‘bad documents’, gut feelings, and informal administrative practices informed by racialized and class-based suspicions are mobilised for decision-making. Sources matter less in such state-crafted dominant fictions, which instead obtain their legitimacy through bureaucratic circulation and inscription and make them ‘true enough’ for officials to act upon
