Global spatial analysis of toxic emissions to freshwater ::operationalization for LCA

    No full text
There is increasing interest in using fate and exposure models to spatially differentiate the impacts of chemical emissions. This work aims at exploring the operationalization in life cycle assessment (LCA) of spatially differentiated models for toxic emissions into freshwater. We analyse and compare the variability of fate and exposure factors at high resolution with aggregated factors at different levels of lower resolution. We developed a spatially resolved fate and exposure characterization model and factors for toxic emissions into freshwater with global coverage at 0.5° × 0.5° resolution, extending a global hydrological model to account for removal processes, namely chemical and biological degradation, sedimentation, and volatilization. We analysed the variation in fate and exposure factors for water ingestion, identifying the main factors of influence. We then developed archetypes for ecosystems and human fate and exposure. Using a case study of emissions of arsenic from red mud disposal as a waste from alumina production, we tested practical solutions to apply spatial characterization factors aggregated at different resolution in LCA, comparing archetype-based with region-based approaches. World maps show up to 5 orders of magnitude variation for chemical fate in fresh water across all 0.5° × 0.5° grid cells and up to 15 orders of magnitude for human intake fractions. The freshwater residence time to the sea and the equivalent depth—over all downstream cells—were the most influential landscape parameters. They were used to define four freshwater landscape archetypes. These archetypes capture variation in fate well, better than country or continent-aggregated values, but are not able to reflect variation in intake fraction. The case study on arsenic from alumina production shows that the determination of industry-specific weighted average represents a pragmatic way to account for sector-specific location of emissions. The population-weighted approach is primarily applicable for emissions that are related to population density, such as household emissions. The developed global freshwater model demonstrates large spatial variations in fate and exposure. Archetypes for fate in fresh water provide substantial reductions in variability compared to country or continental averages, but are more difficult to apply to LCA than rural or urban archetypes for air emissions. The 0.5° × 0.5° grid model and the fate archetypes may also be used in the context of ecological scenarios to identify hotspots. In practice, population-weighted and sector-specific average characterization factors may represent the most operational way to account for specific distribution patterns of toxic emissions in LCA

Pulsed electric field combined with preheating to preserve mildly extracted pea protein

Innovative extraction methods involving dry fractionation and aqueous phase separation have been recently developed to obtain plant-based protein ingredients with high texturing functionality. Such a process was applied to yellow peas, and the microbial quality of the extract was assessed. Pseudomonas trivalis and Erwinia gerundensis were identified as critical microbial contaminants due to their high growth capacities (at 10 °C). As a preservation strategy, pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment (24 kV/cm, 50 Hz, 126 μs) was employed, combined with different product inlet temperatures (25–45 °C). Ohmic heating (ΔT = 20 °C) was measured. At 25–30 °C, the microbial reduction reached 3 logs, attributed solely to electrical effects. At 40 °C, the reduction exceeded 4 logs, where thermal effects dominated. Further increase to 45 °C resulted in thermal modification of pea proteins, potentially compromising its gelling capacity. Additionally, the growth of PEF-treated contaminants at 5 and 10 °C were monitored, revealing rapid cell adaptation and proliferation. Finally, the extracts native microbiota showed an extension of the lag phase (4 days at 5 °C) after PEF treatment, accompanied by a pH stability of 10 days. The findings indicate improved microbial stability of the pea extract following PEF treatment

Improving the health of people living in socioeducational accommodation: the example of participation to an interactive book. People living in socio-educational accommodation, with intellectual or developmental disability for the most part, are confronted with strong health inequalities. In order to improve the health of these people, researchers suggest the adoption of health education methods in daily life and encouraging self-determination. This article presents a health education prototype where beneficiaries have been involved from the conception to the valorization of the results. The project started with a feasibility study for a digital application and evolved into an interactive book to ease access to information. It shows the importance of actively involving beneficiaries in the development of health education solutions, with the aim of reducing inequalities and improving autonomy and quality of life

Metaplectic gabor frames and symplectic analysis of time-frequency spaces

    No full text
We introduce new frames, called metaplectic Gabor frames, as natural generalizations of Gabor frames in the framework of metaplectic Wigner distributions, cf. [7], [8], [5], [17], [27], [28]. Namely, we develop the theory of metaplectic atoms in a full-general setting and prove an inversion formula for metaplectic Wigner distributions on . Its discretization provides metaplectic Gabor frames. Next, we deepen the understanding of the so-called shift-invertible metaplectic Wigner distributions, showing that they can be represented, up to chirps, as rescaled short-time Fourier transforms. As an application, we derive a new characterization of modulation and Wiener amalgam spaces. Thus, these metaplectic distributions (and related frames) provide meaningful definitions of local frequencies and can be used to measure effectively the local frequency content of signals

Les usages de la ville par les personnes âgées

    No full text

Making (in)formality work in a multi-scalar European border regime

    No full text
The European migration control regime claims to strife for ‘orderly’ and safe conditions of migration, yet systematically generates the opposite. This paper explores the role of informality in creating solutions to enable control and produce order in the European migration control regime by examining two areas of border policy characterised by high degrees of regulation and contestation : the implementation of the Dublin III Regulation (2013) and transnational negotiations over readmission agreements between European states and deportable people’s assumed countries of origin. We focus on Sweden and Switzerland, two countries perceived as having high degrees of ‘formality’ in their migration control regimes, and draw on ethnographic material generated between 2015 and 2018 in Swiss and Swedish migration control agencies. We demonstrate the central role of informality in making formal regulations ’work’. The Dublin Regulation necessitates tacit toleration of informality to be enforced, and readmission agreements rely on informal, transnational politics that neither follow migration law nor respectthe rights and lives of people on the move. The article underscores the importance of debunking the myth of an ‘orderly’ migration control regime, informality is what makes European migration control ‘work’, often to the detriment of people on the move
