    Navigating french post-nuclear trajectories ::lessons from Fessenheim's redevelopment pathways

    As with any industry, nuclear installations have a limited lifespan. This is generally around forty years, although there is debate about the possibility of extending the operation of the reactors. In any case, such facilities are bound to shut down eventually. They will have to be dismantled, and their territory redeveloped. However, little attention has been paid to the issues of dismantling and the future use of these sites. The aim of this article is to develop an analytical framework to answer the following questions: What factors influence the redevelopment trajectories of post-nuclear sites? And how do they interact? We consider three redevelopment possibilities: brownfield, greenfield and multi-scale redevelopment. This latter category includes the redevelopment of a post-nuclear territory on a site larger than the original power plant site. Our analytical framework is based on the concept of trajectory. We consider that the choice of redevelopment, which we call spatial configuration, depends on a number of factors, perceived as strategic resources by different actors, and related to each other over a period of time. To illustrate this, we apply our analytical framework to the redevelopment of the Fessenheim nuclear power plant in France. Its application has enabled us to make our framework more flexible to adapt it to local specificities. However, the analysis of the redevelopment trajectories of nuclear power plants with fundamentally different characteristics is essential to better understand the interrelationships that lead to the choice of a particular type of redevelopment

    A recent paper by Ahmed et al. (2025. “Parallels and Discrepancies between non-native Species Introductions and Human Migration.” Biological Reviews 100 (3): 1365–1395), published in Biological Reviews, suggests a comparative analysis of biological invasions (concerning interactions between different species) and human migration (concerning interactions among members of the same species) presenting prospective similarities between the two phenomena and proposing the existence of an “untapped potential in interdisciplinary research”. In this commentary, we assemble scholars from migration and biology domains to raise concerns on the conceptual inconsistencies present in said article and discuss implications for social sciences, migration, ethnic and racial studies.     A Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) risk assessment was conducted to evaluate and document the criticality of process parameters and material attributes involved in a Pseudomonas aeruginosa phage production process. This assessment was carried out following the principles of Quality by Design (QbD) as outlined by the International Council for Harmonisation (ICH) of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use. By systematically identifying and controlling critical factors, this approach contributes to the development of a more robust and reproducible phage production process, ultimately enhancing process efficiency and product quality

    Adequate access to maternal and infant healthcare in the first 1000 days of life is concurrent with lifelong well-being and should be guaranteed regardless of nationality, legal status, and social conditions. By exploring how migration status affects the social determinants of health, this review provides a nuanced understanding of the barriers and facilitators encountered accessing healthcare by undocumented women and their infants in the first 1000 days of life. Following the PRISMA guidelines and the registered protocol (CRD42022328220), a literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo and Scopus. The search focused on manuscripts including undocumented migrants as study participants and reported direct or indirect data on the utilisation or outcomes of maternal and infant healthcare within the defined first 1000 days of life. Fifty-two studies met the inclusion criteria. A narrative synthesis was performed to summarise the information obtained from the data extraction process. Identified barriers include legal barriers (e.g criminalisation of migrants or complexity of administrative procedures, and socio-cultural barriers, (e.g. inadequate health literacy and financial challenges). Facilitators encompassed legal facilitators, like dedicated healthcare clinics, and socio-cultural facilitators, such as language support and healthier lifestyle habits. Ethical issues in connection to healthcare access of undocumented migrants in the first 1000 days were also mapped from the included papers. Considering the health consequences on future generations, the economic implications, and the vulnerability of migrant women, the findings offer positive examples that could be put into place to move towards universal health coverage through a holistic approach that shifts from exclusion and criminalisation to support and compassion

    Burnout, job satisfaction, and intention to leave among midwives in Western Switzerland ::the role of caseload and hospital-based practice models

    Background: Burnout and job dissatisfaction among midwives compromise healthcare quality and workforce retention. Practice models, such as hospital-based versus caseload models, may influence midwives’ well-being and warrant further exploration. Aim: To examine the association between midwifery practice models (caseload vs. hospital) and burnout, job satisfaction, and the intention to leave the profession among midwives in Western Switzerland. Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 392 midwives, using the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory to assess personal, work-related, and patient-related burnout. Multivariable logistic regression explored associations between practice models and burnout levels, job satisfaction, as well as retention in the profession. Main results: Hospital midwives were over nine times more likely than caseload midwives to experience moderate to high work-related burnout (OR = 9.18, p < .001) and were 80 % less likely to report above average job satisfaction (OR = 0.21, p < .001), considering differences between socio-demographic and practice-related factors between the two groups of midwives. Nearly half of all hospital-based participants expressed an intention to leave compared to one in three caseload midwives. Higher burnout and lower job satisfaction were linked to intentions to leave the profession. Discussion and conclusion: Caseload models may protect midwives’ well-being and promote job satisfaction and retention. These findings highlight the critical need for practice model changes and structural reforms in hospital midwifery, incorporating caseload principles, to support sustainable maternal and child healthcare in Western Switzerland and retain a resilient midwifery workforce

    Explanation of deep learning models via logic rules enhanced by embeddings analysis, and probabilistic models

    Deep Learning (DL) models are increasingly dealing with heterogeneous data (i.e., a mix of structured and unstructured data), calling for adequate eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) methods. Nevertheless, only some of the existing techniques consider the uncertainty inherent to the data. To this end, this study proposes a pipeline to explain heterogeneous data-based DL models by combining embedding analysis, rule extraction methods, and probabilistic models. The proposed pipeline has been tested using synthetic data (multi-individual food items tracking). This study has achieved (i) inference enhancement through probabilistic and evidential reasoning, (ii) generation of logical explanations based on extracted rules and predictions, and (iii) integration of textual data into the explanation pipeline through embedding analysis
