LIGHTEN UP! ::On Biology and Time

    No full text
Through the lens of art, the exhibition Lighten Up! On Biology and Time at EPFL Pavilions explores the connection of living organisms with the natural cycle of light and dark. From fungi to ferns, from hamsters to humans, all have evolved circadian rhythms that connect them to the alternation of day and night. In our screen-based society, there is an increasing urgency to raise awareness of reconnecting to the outdoor environment. Nineteen installations transform our daily, lunar, and seasonal rhythms into light- and soundscapes, immersive spaces, or virtual experiences to remind us of the necessity of regular light exposure for a healthy life. CIRCA DIEM is part of the exhibition Lighten Up! First presented at the 2021 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, the project explores our daily exposure to light as well as its dynamics over time as crucial elements of a healthy and sustainable life in dense urban environments. Light received at the eye regulates our neurophysiology and profoundly affects the livability of cities, which we tend to inhabit increasingly indoors and deeper underground. CIRCA DIEM – ‘about a day’ in Latin – raises awareness of the threat of this disconnection. Inadequate light exposure affects our circadian rhythms and can have detrimental effects on our health, well-being, and sleep. Architecture and urban fabric control our access to daylight by filtering and redirecting light through spatial forms. Entering a monumental cylindrical space that suggests being deep in an urban canyon, visitors are immersed in the passage of time through four phases of the 24-hour day – morning, midday, evening, and night. This sensorial experience involves a dynamic installation of light and dark, color and sound, and a novel light-shaping lens technology that precisely controls high-contrast patterns evoked by the built environment to project photorealistic images. Experienced together, they allude to the multiple manifestations of the circadian cycle under which we all live. Marilyne Andersen joined forces with her colleague Mark Pauly at EPFL and Javier Fernández Contreras from HEAD — Genève to turn the outcomes of her ongoing research on photobiology into an immersive experience of ‘a day in the life’ – or rather, a day in the light. Together, they co-supervised the work of a collective of students, designers, engineers, and scientists to produce an immersive installation that invites us to reflect on the relationships between urban lifestyles and light hygiene

    No full text

    No full text

The effectiveness of high versus lower enteral protein intake, considering energy intake, on clinical outcomes in critically ill children ::a systematic review and meta-analysis

    No full text
Background & aims : The optimal protein intake for critically ill children remains uncertain. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of high versus lower enteral protein intake, accounting for energy intake, on clinical and nutritional outcomes in children hospitalized in pediatric intensive care units (PICU). Methods : Following the JBI methodology, a comprehensive search was conducted across Medline, CINAHL Ultimate, Embase, and Cochrane Library from inception to March 18, 2024. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving critically ill children admitted to PICU for ≥48 h and receiving enteral nutrition were eligible. Studies comparing protein intake of 2 g/kg/day to internationally recommended intakes were included. Two independent reviewers screened, selected, extracted the data, and assessed the risk of bias using the JBI critical appraisal checklist for RCTs; a third reviewer resolved any disagreements. Meta-analyses were performed for nitrogen balance, PICU length of stay, prealbumin and blood urea levels using a random-effects model to account for between-study heterogeneity. Results : Eight RCTs were included, assessing high (n = 6) and low (n = 2) enteral protein intake versus the recommended intake, mostly in infants aged 2–4 months, with bronchiolitis or after cardiac surgery. Four studies presented an unclear risk of bias and four a high risk. High protein intake (∼3 g/kg/day) was associated with significantly higher nitrogen balance values (effect size: 0.59; 95 % CI: 0.18–1.01; p = 0.0055) compared to the recommended intake (∼1.6 g/kg/day) but had no impact on PICU length of stay and was associated with increased blood urea levels. Among four RCTs assessing gastrointestinal tolerance, two reported increased diarrhea or gastric retention. Data on low versus recommended intake were limited to two studies. Conclusions : High enteral protein intake may increase nitrogen balance in this PICU population, but potential adverse effects and the lack of evidence for clinical benefit raise concerns about its safety. Further well-powered RCTs are needed to evaluate the effects of protein doses within the 1–2.2 g/kg/day ranges in more diverse PICU populations

    No full text
This article focuses on the benefits and challenges of restorative group dialogues, which have been implemented by the Swiss RJ Forum in Switzerland since 2017. Restorative dialogues bring together persons who have been victims and perpetrators of similar offences in a structured, trauma-informed setting to promote dialogue, accountability and mutual understanding. Their implementation highlights the importance of collaboration with criminal justice and correctional authorities, the need for in-depth individual preparation of those involved and the need for rigorous training of facilitators to support trauma-informed practice.

The impact of balance of multilingual exposure on gesture comprehension in children above preschool age

    No full text
Previous work had shown that multilingual preschool children are better at interpreting deictic gestures than their monolingual peers. The present study examines whether this multilingual effect persists beyond preschool age and whether it extends to iconic (i.e., representing the referent) and conventional (i.e., holding an arbitrary meaning) gestures. A total of N = 105 children (aged 3 to 8), varying in their balance of exposure to more than one language since birth, completed a gamified gesture comprehension task. The three gesture types were presented in four communicative conditions, namely alone, with reinforcing or supplementing speech, compared to speech produced alone. Analyses revealed that children with greater balance in their multilingual exposure understood significantly more speechless iconic gestures than children with less balanced multilingual exposure. Findings align with previous work and theoretical frameworks, indicating that multilingual exposure enhances children’s sensitivity to non-verbal communicative cues

Horodocs ::A scalable, sustainable, robust and privacy compliant system to securely timestamp digital evidence and documents

    No full text
Human activities produce more and more digital traces. Criminal activities are no exception: criminals often operate on computers, carry mobile phones, use GPS devices, or are recorded by surveillance cameras. Moreover, analyses of analog traces can produce results in a digital form. As digital information (evidence or results) becomes highly relevant in today's investigations, there is a pressing need for a trustworthy way to strengthen the chain of custody for digital content, especially its integrity component. The Horodocs timestamping system responds to the need for a scalable, robust, trustworthy, independently verifiable, chronological ledger preventing backdating and enabling integrity verification of a digital file. In order to make the system scalable and limit costs, submitted file hash values are grouped together into a local, temporary Merkle tree, called the Horodocs tree; this tree is discarded after its root value has been used to record both a derived identifier and an encrypted random control value on the Ethereum blockchain. The main innovation resides in the way information about the Horodocs tree is provided to each participant having requested a timestamp during the lifespan of this tree. Each submitter gets a receipt with enough information to verify the timestamp for the hash values that were submitted to the Horodocs system: the receipt is only valid for the hash values of the original file and allows one to recalculate the root value of the corresponding discarded Horodocs tree independently. The root value is required to find the record in the Ethereum blockchain and to recover and decrypt the stored random control value to validate the date and time of the timestamp. Throughout its conception, the Horodocs system has been developed with a concern for strong robustness against backdating, privacy-by-design, transparency, usability, scalability, sustainability, automation, as well as cost and energy saving
