    Steamboats General Joe Wheeler, Welcome, and Buck Elk hauling supplies to build the railroad from Batesville up the White River to Cotter. The Wheeler, 65 tons net, was owned by Captain Billy Joyce and Tom Stallings, of Newport, while the Welcome, 45 tons net, was owned by Captain E. C. Riddell of Jacksonport. The Buck Elk was one of Captain William L. Heckman's boats and was 58 tons net
