    F-4 Phantom flights from the USS Enterprise in the Gulf of Tonkin

    The F-4 was an awkward, cumbersome mover on a flight deck. Much different in the air. At a loaded launch weight of 56,000lbs with six 500 lb Mark 82 bombs, four heat-seeking Sidewinder missiles, four radar-guided Sparrow missiles, and a 600-gallon centerline fuel tank it required afterburner on every catapult launch. This clip captures pre-flight movement on the flight deck and arrested landings from the flight deck level. Every arrested landing is a jolting controlled crash. Flight operations from a carrier deck have been described as a ballet where a lot of people have to be in the right places at the right times doing their jobs well to make it work safely
